  1. I hope they save that R27, it will run good with 8506 due to it not being rebuilt, I rather see that than that shit called the R44 in the museum

I really do hope they save 8145 as well. I do wonder what's up with the car though...looks to be hooked to a train of Arnines. We'll probably find out soon enough.

  2. Another scrap update:

Another pair of R33WF cars left from 207 to scrap yesterday. Car numbers unknown.

Next up on the scrap line: R30 cars 8424-25, the Coney Island School Cars. The pair didn't seem to have been stripped of anything at all, still have the doors covered in plywood.

R27/30 Pitkin pair still hooked to the Arnines. For now.

  3. Perhaps downvotes should be enabled provided there's a reason (spam or a person makes a counter argument about why they don't agree with a certain post).

I too hope the R27 is saved. Such a shame we've gone from a couple hundred of them (r27/30) to a handful now in over 20yrs. Would be nice to have it up an running with the R30, R16 and R34 cars. I mean, the R9s, it's like every year or 2 there's another car being restored. So why can't we get that 4 running again? I'd love a B division version of the tomc.

That's what I'm actually hoping for. That R27, despite the consensus from some posters elsewhere that it should be gotten rid of just because we already have an R30, for example, 8145 does look solid.  Unless there's a really good reason to (like bent or rusted frames or something beyond repair), there's no reason to get rid of it.  The way I see it, If we can keep an extra R12 car and an R14, we can certainly keep this one.

Wonder which two those were... Definitely getting grim, you know it's bad when Corona only has one Redbird left.

Right, but I think we all know (and Harry has been quite clear) that the downvote is pretty much reserved for intentionally malicious or unnecessary posts, not just things that you disagree with.

I wish I knew...saw then both from Riverside Drive on the GWB. I'm thinking they could be some R33WF cars.

  4. Small scrapping update for those interested:

Two more Redbird cars were trucked out this afternoon. They made their way across the George Washington Bridge at about a quarter to 2pm today.

Up next for scrapping: Rider Car RD407 (ex R33ML 8869) that derailed and got damaged a while back.

  5. 207 is either the last stop (being scrapped) or a place for restoration. I hope they preserve both. 8145 is the only R27 left and it would be nice to preserve a redbird R30.

I'm hoping they keep 8145. Would be two birds with one stone - sole remaining R27, and it's already painted in the Redbird scheme.

  6. So guys,

I'm right now I have a view of 207 Street Yard...remember how juat last weekend the TOMC made a trip to Brooklyn? Well right now i have a view of a 4 car train of R27/30 school cars hooked up to the Arnines. It's too far to see exactly what the consist numbers are, but i'm going to assume one car is R27 8145 and the other is R30 8463. Don't know about the other two cars (maybe 8424-25 from CIY), but this is a good photo opportunity.

  7. Crazy ride on the train this morning...

Got on the (A) at the junction thinking it would be a normal ride up to Penn Station. First, while waiting for the train, there was this dude in some daisy duke shorts, a tank top, and heels dancing in the platform. Snapped me a picture of it and got on the train. At Nostrand Av, I see the TOMC heading the other way. Thought I was seeing things at first, but you can't miss that silver and white paint scheme lol.

..Fast forward to High St, and we sit in the station, C/R said that there's a sick passenger at Chambers St. That pissed me off somewhat since I had a bus to catch. I double back to Jay St and find out everything is going over the (F), so i hop on the (C) and take that to Penn Station.

I get off the train already pressed for time and get slammed with the Comic Con crowd who all get on the wrong M34 and they hold up the line even more. I make my bus with only minutes to spare

And it isn't even noon yet...

Hmmmm....I could be speculating here, either it could be the Track Geometry Car since they've been doing track work past Euclid...or if that was the TOMC and they're not at 207 like I saw yesterday, then something could be going down perhaps? Maybe to pick up old equpiment? The TOMC did when they picked up R36WF cars 9586-87 at Concourse Yard weeks ago. Just a guess here...
  8. Today's random observations:

Track replacement went down at Concourse Yard this weekend. They had quite a number of work cars there. They seem to be building some sort of shed under the boulevard bridge near the ramp to the Jerome Line. They've also did some weed and plant cutting along Paul Avenue. The R68 C Train that ran yesterday was parked near the tunnel.

Elsewhere in the yard, I noticed R26 7774-75 had no third rail shoes, nor the wood beams that support the shoes. Was wondering why they were removed, or how long ago they were gone. Also for some reason, a flatcar was hooked up to the pair.

I saw your post on subchat; those pictures are beautiful!

    Thanks! : )

  9. ^^^^ Nice! +1.

    Thanks man! : )

For those interested, this was at Pitkin Yard. Anyone can see the R38 pair and the D-Type on the same track by walking along Lincoln Avenue. The view is on a downhill ramp heading towards Linden Blvd. Just walk up that ramp and halfway up, you can see them.

You can also spot a pair of R30s (school car 8463 and Rail Adhesion Car 8558) and R27 8145 at the corner of Linden Blvd. and Eldert Lane. Walk up the driveway closest to the corner and look through the fence. 8145 is on track 9, 8463 on track 8, and 8558 on track 7. I really hope the R27 is preserved. It does need lots of work.

  10. Two questions: are there still a few redbird garbage trains running? Whatwith the summer months, it's been mostly R32s that I've seen... Secondly, are there any R38s (scrapped or not) that remain on Transit property or have they all been shredded?

For the second question, the only remaining R38s that exist are 4028 and 4029. I took this picture myself just earlier this evening:

  11.

I hope it is getting truly preserved to and I your post on Subchat

I hope so. It would be something to m/u with 8506.

    Also:

Earlier this evening, R36WF cars 9586-87 were in the process of being moved from Concourse Yard. They made up the 5th and 6th cars of a 10 car consist, all of them the R33ML TOMC. Perhaps heading to 207 Street Yard?  Took pics, thought not of the best quality. Will try to put them up soon.

  12. Today I was meeting some friends for a late afternoon lunch in Ozone Park. Since work ended rather early for me I decided to make a Transit Museum run to kill some time. (I’ll load some pictures soon eventually).  R44 5240 gives off a somewhat annoying, continuous, high-pitched sound undercar. It sounds electrical.  What’s causing that sound and is it something that can be shut off?

Also, I walked by Pitkin Yard along Linden Blvd just a little while ago and I remembered asking about R27, 8145 a while back on here, so I went to check it and the other school car 8463 out for myself. When I saw 8145 today, its portable A/C units were pulled out from the windows and end roll signs removed. And it’s really dirty exterior-wise. For something that’s supposedly owned by the Transit Museum, it’s certainly been let go.  I hope it's being truly preserved and not otherwise.

  13. So I was watching this while on Facebook just now of last March's R44 being delivered to the Transit Museum:

    https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151357198333843&set=vb.89895068842&type=3&theater

It's a really short video...but one thing I noticed is that 5240 is being pushed into the station by another train. I wonder if that train is a consist of other R44s or a train of R46s? The train does release air so the video ends right before the train gets ready to move in. It's hard for me to tell though.

  14. With many SMEES and old subway cars being scrapped lately, I have some questions:

    • What’s the deal with R16s 6305 and 6339 at Coney Island Yard? They’ve been at CIY for many years. What is, or were, their purpose? Are they preserved? Spare parts for 6387 or other SMEES? Are they heading for scrap eventually?

    • What’s the status of R27 8145? I know it’s been preserved for the Transit Museum since 2011. Has any work or cleanup been done recently?

    • I wonder when the folks at CCY will move the R40M cars from the far back of the yard. I walked along Bedford Park Blvd yesterday evening and could see how there are plants or weeds starting to grow mid-body around the cars. If it’s being preserved, why not move them in with the preserved Redbirds that were moved there recently?

    • Not long ago I took pictures of some of the preserved cars at 207 Street Yard and other places. I saw R22 Garbage Motor 7486 and it’s been stripped of everything – it’s merely a car body shell now. But it’s been moved about the 215th Street side of the yard for several months, now sitting with the R143 B cars 8278-79. Same as the R17/21 work motor pair at CCY, they’ve been on the same track for more than a decade and they were stripped of some parts years ago in preparation for scrap. Question is, are they really planning on scrapping these three cars, or are there some plans for the cars later on? With their poor conditions, I’d figured they’d be gone by now with many other cars being scrapped before them. The R21 at CCY’s got large plants and shrubs reaching car height now.

    • What’s the status on the R110A set that was being converted into new Pump Cars? Has there been progress since February? What of the other set at 239th Street Yard? Will one car be preserved? Will a R110B car be saved?

Thanks in advance for any responses. And my apologies for asking so many questions!

  15. Hello folks. Sorry if this has been posted previously on these forums, as I've only lurked around these parts for a long time and barely post......but I came across this recently. Has anyone checked this out lately?

    https://www.facebook.com/r36preservation

EDIT: They're trying to save R36WF cars 9400-01 from the scrapper and preserve it for future operation, being its the only Westinghouse pair of their class still remaining...and they seem to be doing some sort of progress.
