  1. To the best of my knowledge that rail serves two purposes; prevent the creeping of the cross ties/sleepers, especially on curves and help prevent a runaway truck should a derailment occur.

That is not guard rail. The purpose of guard rail is to help guide the wheel flanges and is found directly adjacent to running rail. Although it doesn't serve the same purpose as the namesake it's more like gauntlet rail than guard rail.

  2. How long are they gonna be training you guys?

They're qualifying (7) line crews and Extra Extra/Extra List people for now... it's up to the Assistant Chief Transportation Officer of the (7) line and School Car but I can't imagine it taking more than two months to qualify everyone.

There theoretically shouldn't be, but I wonder if there would be any operational difference between the refurbed sets and the completely new sets.

Completely new sets? Save for the C car of the six car sets they're all refurbished. The C car of the five car units are also refurbished. It also doesn't feel like operating a (6) at all, everything is super smooth–it doesn't buck while braking or taking power.

  3. Maybe it's because I'm so used to the R-62s on the (7) but the R-188s are absolutely smoother and pick up speed quicker. I was doing 12MPH in the yard and it felt like I was doing 4... the trick to make sure you can keep the train wrapped going back on the upgrade in the tube has to be tuned for this equipment–I had to go Full Service going Northbound.

I guess it's not unlike the performance difference between the Bombardier and Kawasaki equipment... figure out the acceleration and brakes after a couple of stops and you're good to go

  4. A few TSSs, including our instructors, went up there two days ago and got pictures, video and pamphlets full of schematics (the cover featured and angled picture of the front bonnet and a few feet of the body... of course it only looked like a 142A fresh from a wash). The Master Controller Console actually isn't like the R-143/160 as I thought it would be, and the Dead Man feature only allows the handle to be twisted in one direction-against the right hand's normal angle of rest, to prevent BIEs. Of course there's the extra TOD as it's utilized on the (L). They barely felt comfortable showing us, so I won't post anything. It looked really cool, though. They got to play with them, too! Boo!

I was further told that, at this point, the master controller has an "L" shape, CBTC is not implemented on the equipment (yet) and the length of track they had to test it on was tighter than the distance between Beverly and Courtelyou Road stations.

  6. To the best of my knowledge the MTA also purchases from those whom did not win the initial bids to comply with anti-trust laws. The same person told me the equipment from off the (7) line would be going to the (6) line after the retrofitted R-142As (aka R-188s) make it to the (7) line. Who is he? Welllll... I'll just say that he's a Motor Instructor (aka TSS), and when he goes to pick, there's no one before him.

Has it come up that they'll also have R-143/R-160-style, right-hand-only controls?

  7. Interested in a job (sorry of this is old :P?
