Well all I really did was practice and mess around with it until I got the hang of it. What you should do is get a good editing program, such as Inkscape and download the bus map from the MTA's website. Then open it up, delete all the bus routes already on the map, then just use the drawing line tool to draw new lines, change the width and color, and that's pretty much it. For the other stuff such as route numbers and terminals, I just copied them from the original map.
