  1. Orion, as a retired TA employee and a railfan, I disagree with you on this.  If the railfan community doesn't police itself by reporting the law breakers, then the MTA will come down HARD on railfans.  Then, when a photo ban is in place, you'll all be crying and complaining about it.

  2. Most people do not realize that the purpose of express service is NOT to make a trip shorter, but is to even out loading.  Most locals take less than 5 minutes longer than the express covering the same distance.  The 1 only takes 5 minutes longer than the 2 and 3 between 96 Street and Chambers Street.  The 7 express only saves 4 minutes over the 7 local.  The 6 express only saves 3 minutes over the 6 local in the Bronx.  And the 5 Bronx Express is only 2 minutes shorter than the 2 local!  Even the 6 in Manhattan only takes 7 minutes longer than the 4 and 5 expresses, despite making 14 more stops!  On the IND,  in midtown and lower Manhattan, there are only 5 local stops between both the 6th and 8th Avenue lines!

  3. The ENTIRE R142A fleet is going to be converted to R188s,  The R142's will have FIND displays installed.  As for where the displaced R62A's will be going, watch for some interesting fleet assignments over the next few years.  Eventually, I see all lines except the 2 and 5 running mixed fleets of NTT's and R62/62A's.  The 62/62A fleet should be rebuilt with AC propulsion, digital signs, automatic announcements, and CBTC capabilities.  I'd also like to see the entire subway fleet made FRA compliant.

  4. Since @46Dover did only BMT/IND i'm oing to do IRT

    (1) Back to skip stop service with the (9)

    (2) Make minimal cuts to Wakefield and Flatbush fill remaining open slots with (5)

    (3) Make 24hr service to Atlantic Ave Barclays Center

    (4) Night service express to Franklin Ave then local to New Lots

    (5) Select Runs from Eastchester via 7th ave express, also see above

    (6) Weekend runs to Atlantic Ave Barclays

    (7) Replace 10:13 weekday train with express from queens

Replace 14:35 weekday to queens with express add 2:38 local instead

    (9) new skip stop rush hour to Penn Sta only

    (S) 24hrs service with night trains departing every 15 minutes.

the 1/9 skip stop was an utter failure, since on the upper Broadway line, too many people get on and off at too many places.

In  addition, your plan requires too many switching moves, causing unnecessary congestion.  You do not need five services in Brooklyn on the IRT.  It is congested enough with four.  Keep in mind, more express service on the 7 isn't necessary--the running time is only 3-4 minutes less than the local, yet you serve only haqlf the passengers.  You are making the 2 and 5 service way too complicated.  My pattern is simpler both from an operational standpoint, and from the riding public's standpoint.

I DO think the Grand Central Shuttle should be 24/7.

It is being built so I just treated it as an eventuality, the shuttle runs would run yo 57th/6th

It isn't open yet, therefore you cheated!   lmfao!

  5. (B) and (C) swap terminals. (B) runs on weekends during tourist season.

    (D) when M runs to Manhattan late night, it runs local.

    (G) late nights to Queens Plaza for an easier transfer.

    (J) rush hour skip stop eliminated local JC to ENY. Express stops at Myrtle and Marcy.

    (L) late night until 130, short turns at Myrtle to provide 9 tph between Myrtle and Manhattan.

    (M) week late nights terminates 34th/6th

    (T) 2nd Ave late night shuttle 125th to 57th, experimentally, if not then 4 2nd st.

    (Z) ENY to Broad, local stops rush hour only.

You cheated, since the rules were you had to work with what exists.  No SAS!

  6. Why not run the 4 to Utica late night in your case? R from Parsons is no good because Montague is closed,.

Where would the A from Mamhattan terminate late night? Euclid?

Too many Trains at rockaway Parkway.Cant add Z

The G is great. No reason not to implement it.And either that or the F should go express in peak direction.

Midnight A service would be replaced by the C.  The A would only be a round robin shuttle late at night.

There is no need for 4 service past Atlantic Avenue late night since the 3 would be running 24/7

As far as the Z to Rockaway Parkway, my proposed new Z actually was done many years ago, albeit during rush hours only.  Middays, the Z would terminate at Broadway Junction.

Since the G trains have to go to/from Coney Island yard anyway, why not have them in service.

The R should run from Parsons, along with the new 24/7 M during weekdays.  Weekends, the R should run from 57 St-7 Avenue

  7. Time to have some fun.  How would you set up the service patterns for NYCT?   Here are the rules:

    1. You have to work within the existing physical plant.  You cannot build any new lines. (i.e. no 7 to NJ, no SAS)

    2. You have to work within existing track layouts.  You cannot build any new switches.

    Here is mine!

  8. What happens when a crew that is supposed to go to Dyre Avenue, instead is put on a train that goes to Nereid Avenue?  And what if that rerouted crew is scheduled to make another run from Dyre?  All of the crews that are scheduled to go to Nereid Avenue are finishing crews, meaning, their work day is done once that train is in the yard.  Often, however, crews do not make the trips they are scheduled to make, but make a trip either earlier or later than scheduled.  Been there, done that.

  9. (5): Single train operation on SB Track between Pelham Parkway & East 180th St. Single shuttle train leaves East 180th St from Center Platform. Doors will be open on bwetoth side. Free shuttle buses operates between Pelham Parkway & Dyre Av.

    (6): No trains between 3rd Av-138th St & Parkchester-East 177th St.

Free shuttle bus operate as follows.

    1. Local shuttle bus operates between Parkchestester & Hunts Point Av.

    2. Local shuttle bus operates between Hunts Point Av & Parkchester.

    3. Express shuttle bus operates between Parkchester & 3rd Av-138th St, serving Hunts Point Av station only.

Simpler solution.  Run n/b 5 service via Track Y-3 to Dyre Avenue.

<6> trains can be switched to the local track s/o hunts Point, and can be switched back n/o Hunts Point.

  10. Ok Im Not Tryin to "shaft" the dyre riders But its less stops on dyre then wpr...so to correct this how about every 3rd 5 outta 180 head up to 238!....the 5 runs pretty frequently so I think this isnt askin too much...and the reason why theres no deamand for Lex ave is becuase its never been offered on a regular basis outside of rush hours....im sure the demand is there But folks up this way are just used to havin direct westside access and transfer south of 180 for the eastside...I work on 42nd And id gladly pass over the 2 for the 5...the 5 makes less stops south of 149 compared to the 2...especially when its peak exp...its 50 mins on the 2 and with exp 5 its about 40 mins...Just sayin...

A little history lesson here.  When the Dyre Avenue line was connected to the main IRT in 1957, 7th Avenue trains served the Dyre Avenue line, while Lexington Avenue trains served the White Plains Rd. line.  Late nights, the Dyre line was a shuttle, like today, with 7th Avenue trains serving the WP line.  In 1964, the north terminals were flipped  to the current service patterns you have today in the Bronx.  To mitigate the loss of the WPR line East side service, the rush hour Lexington Avenue Through Express service from 241/238 Street was retained.  It always has been an operational headache, especially in regards to crewing trains, and the service is underutilized, especially in the PM rush hours.  Incidentally, in response to rider complaints, and to avoid confusion, in the early 1970's, ALL 5 trains were made expresses in the Bronx during the rush hours, with all 2 trains running as locals.
