  1. In the end, if money was the end-all factor, nothing mentioned here would go on except what TA is already doing.  That's all they have the money for.   Over half a billion dollars that would have gone to other projects and/or upgrades (fantasy or not) now goes to continuing to repair damange from Sandy.  Thats the reality of it.  Carry on.

  2. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the two stations being where they at... one cant say close down one or the other without saying close down either Wall St or Bowling Green in the IRT.  Its almost like one wants them closed just so the train can go faster into the joined station or Newkirk... as if that 30mph sign that many ignore at the head of Newkirk isn't there and that trains already are pushing 40 into Beverley s/b, quite possibly already the fastest station on that section of track.

  3. There is also a bus depot at the far end of the yard as well if I remember right which goes another block.  This isn't Allerton Av (5) where one is really just putting a station and entrances over the street itself (a thruspan and el underneath) and eating away a handful of backyard on the south side of Allerton (there's nothing there on the north side).  Back to the west end, there is also a switch in the middle of that tunnel that would have to go somewhere that is often used to allow work trains to wrong rail south from 36th and north from 9Av.

A better arugment might be given for the Sea Beach between 59th and 8 Av, as there is actually open space (not tunnel, but open cut and some residential above 6Av (i think its 6th).

  4. How could the baseball specials run local? I don't think there's a crossover from the bypass to the local.

I never said they would run local :D  Simply terminate at Pacific St and go back north from there, often Murphy doesn't want the train as they lose flexibility with the interlockings at 36st and 9Av when a revenue train is there at a time when work trains are pouring out of the yard.

  5. Because the (D) uses the West End and the (N) uses the Sea Beach. It saves a line of text to combine their branches with express or local. In this case exp/lcl refers to what they do on 4th Ave. I guess it isn't that obvious to everyone.....

Pro tip: if a N/B train is running on the local track north of 36 St, it will ALWAYS stop at Dekalb, even if it's running express on the local.

Addendum: If a train runs through the bypass going south, it will be express on 4Av at least to 36st (except some baseball specials).

  6. No way, I still have fun at work (almost) every day. It's hearing nutty ideas like most of the one in here that hurt my head because I understand better than most of you how they just won't work. Don't take it personally when I shoot down your idea, I'm just trying to return you to the real world.

Yup, its a pleasure when its still fun monetizing your hobby, but we're clearly in the minority.

  7. Wait, WHAT did I say that set you off?

I'm beginning to wonder the same thing myself. Maybe it's time to move on to a new hobby for me.....

That's why I've taken this in stride, can't educate the world and expect all on here to pull a MikeGerald and completely learn everything about how rail works, trains work, the geology of NYC when it comes to the subway, and become a subway history buff first before posting anything (that's a lot of information that takes years to fully learn and synergize).  Some will never completely get it until they become TA personnel themselves (assuming they're old enough to become one).  Then you throw in the fact that turning a hobby into a career (monetizing it) often takes the fun out of the hobby, which is why some still won't do it.

  8. The IND designed their lines to carry people from far-flung corners of the 5 boroughs to the central business district. It made sense to skip a lot of stops between the ends of the lines and the central business district, and it made sense to concentrate all the stops everywhere else. Have a look at the Queens Boulevard line and the 8 Avenue line.

And remember Nostrand (A) was supposed to be a bypassed stop as well.

  9. If it's just walking at average pace, then Manhattan is closer to 95% (the lone exception being the far west side below 59-CC and East Village).  A 10 minute walk from 8Av below 59th puts you roughly between 10th and 11th (which merge back into WSH lower down), and at the moment there isn't much residential in those areas.

  10. A question about the IRT White Plains Road Line:

Why is the (5) express between East 180th Street and 3rd Avenue-149th Street at rush hour depending on the direction? Is it to shorten commuting time for those from the Dyre Avenue Line traveling to Manhattan's East Side or to lower capacity and even out ridership at East 180th Street, 3rd Avenue-149th Street, and 149th Street-Grand Concourse?

Its to maximize capacity at 3Av-149th on south.
  11. OPTO can't be done on R32's for one (technology didn't progress that far yet back then). R46 is the minimum class equipment running that can do it, which is why they brought two sets over there. Unlike the shuttle (where its two T/O for sake of saving time), all other OPTO operations are indeed with just a T/O on a train so equipped to operate doors from the front. There's a shuttle switch for use on R68/R143/R160, R46 is the more traditional just full service the train after a stop and use the door consule behind your head. From management's perspective, bring OPTO back to the Rockaways frees up more conductors - and T/O's for that matter - for operations elsewhere in the system.

  12. I know I forgot to mention this...

On December 20, 2012 while railfanning on the southbound (C) route from 168th Street to Euclid Avenue (rush hour of course), there were delays. An (A) to Ozone Park-Lefferts Boulevard passed me at about 81-72 Streets. Then another (A) bound for Howard Beach-JFK Airport arrives at 42nd Street. We then made another connection to it at West 4th. Then it got backed up near Canal Street due to the (A) to Lefferts infront of it as I look through the window of the R32 (C) I was on and we leave Canal first. The (A) that we made a connection with at 42nd and West 4th arrived at Euclid about after 5 minutes after my (C) beat it to Euclid!

This was due to signal trouble at Franklin Avenue on A3. That day, the legendary clear on the post timer (that every railfan HATES when a T/O brakes there)... DIDN'T CLEAR ON THE POST. For the few railfans that wonder why I dont push it there and take it at 39-41 so the train can blast into Nostrand at 45 (rather merely coast up to it and take it at 33-35 depending on the train), there's your answer. Today, they were working on the area again being that there was no regular service there all day. It is possible they may adjust that timer again and/or install the 2nd one they were supposed to. That is all.
  13. I have to look again, but there is a C/R board there but no [10]. When they ran the GO where they had station stops at Pelham Pkwy, a TSS was on duty at the platform at all times. Rule says when there's no [10] stop at the end of the platform to ensure the entire train is berthed in the station. Right now they are having issues with Fordham Rd and 145 (both (D) ) with GO's that go down the middle. In both locations at the [10] car southbound stop, the c/r is off the board on the offside (northbound board is off in both locations) even though the train is fully berth properly in the station. Some supt's on the phone even wondered if there was a board there (SMH), and wanted a TSS to go down to verify there's a board, even though I told him yes.

Southbound at 145, the train stops right at the punch box. But when on the (B) and you come north into the station, the punch box is about 10 feet away from you. On a fun note, the next time any of you are at 145LL, take a look at where the northbound [10] is on 1 track (a move sometimes done when there's two (B) 's in a row). I wont say anything more, I'll wait for someone on here to go report it. You will lol and SMH.
