It was turned off for a reason. What that reason is is currently unclear, but it was for a reason.

as it stands, the only way the train knows which side the doors will truly open on is which side the train operator has enabled and which side the conductor has their key in the door controls for.

you might well say “well, can’t they just program it in…”

That only works if everything is perfect and normal and we all know those concepts do not exist down there.

For example, “express on the local”. I’m still making the same station stops, but with few exceptions, I’m opening up on the other side than I normally would as an express.

That probably explains why the door lights weren't working the way they should.

Idk this R211A inaugural run is like a scam. All of the new "real beneficial" features did NOT exists or doesn't exist on this train. You think R211 you think, open gangway, door indicating lights, and station layout information with exits/escalators/elevator and which car you're in.

Open gangway: Obviously the -A doesn't have open gangway, so that's why this train doesn't really feel "new" to the average person, they need to find something that's really different from the rest of the trains. When the R211T enters service, it'll catch the average public attention much, much more.

Door Indicating Lights: When I saw the MTA displaying this at the R211 display, my first thought was "oh this is what the have on the Montreal Azur trains". Which means they light up green when the train is approaching a station so you know which side the doors are opening. Then remain green until the doors are closing in which they then turn blinking red. Once the doors are closed the lights turn off and then stay off until they approach the next station, in which they turn green again. It should be programmed with the "This Is" announcement as a train approaches a station. See below example of how it works in Montreal:

Station Layout Display: This feature is on the MP14 in Paris for Line 14 and Line 4, (and soon Line 11). Kamen, you make a good point as to why it might be difficult, but I'm sure there's a solution. If anything, it should be programmed for "normal operations", and then be disabled whenever the train deviates from its normal routing (or normal service pattern).

Other than those features, the only other real benefit it has to the general public is security cameras (which doesn't help anyone on a daily basis).

Here's some things the General Public doesn't care / doesn't like about this train.

    1. The 25% seat decrease (people with long commutes gotta stand on a subway that's for the most part, delayed and slow). The (A) is essential packed from 59st-Broadway Junction on a regular. Good luck commuting between that and the seats are taken before you even get on.

    2. A bunch of TV screens showing ads across the car (the public doesn't care). Looks "nice", but all the other NTTs have it.

    3. The destination/next stop sign in the cars.  For the first time in NTT history, the full station text cannot fit on one screen / row for common stations. This deviates from what everyone is used to seeing on all the other NTTs, so that's going to take some time getting used to. Not sure why MTA would allow them to spec the train with less characters than before.

    4. The door lights. They look cool and "modern", but what's the point? Obviously the blinking red is good when doors are closing but what about the green? Until the lights are used for what people would really find them beneficial for, then it just looks like a waste to them in which they would then think MTA could spend the money on better things.

I love the R211, but I'm really here for the R211T, as that's the real next generation subway car. And hopefully they can address the flaws mentioned above by time the R211T enter service, so it can really feel like a brand new train with modern features.

    Thank you for this!

The Wakefield bound 39 has a stop at 238 (Nereid) on Edson that is not announced and the Norwood bound 16 has a stop at Baychester on 233 that is not announced, although it might not matter by the time that the redesign commences in June.

The Pelham Manor 16 currently announces the next stop as Webster on 235 when the bus stop pole for Webster on 233 was moved to the end of the New York platform at 233 (Woodlawn) for the Metro North.

Thanks for these, and yes they might be fixed with the Bronx redesign, but who knows they had errors with the Staten Island redesign to where this day some things still aren't corrected.

Definitely though after June 26th I'll make note to see if it's been fixed or not.

  3. Alright so now that a majority of the local buses have onboard announcement systems, I want to also turn this thread into a thread that talks about any errors that the announcement systems make. The announcement systems get their data from BusTime, so if BusTime has the wrong info, the announcements will have the wrong info.

After looking at the depot rosters, every local line has a bus model with a next stop announcement system except for the Q11, Q21, Q22, Q35, Q41, Q64, Q110, and Q112. (a few buses don't count)

Obviously, the system isn't perfect and there are many changing variables and limitations, however, I want to highlight as many issues possible so they can be addressed in due time.

When riding the bus, if you notice any announcement systems that:

    • make the next stop announcement as a bus is pulling into the current stop
    • announces a stop that IS NOT a stop
    • announces a place of interest that is no longer there (stores, etc.)
    • does not announce a stop that ACTUALLY IS a stop
    • pronounces a stop name incorrectly
    • announces an incorrect transfer

....please post them here, so that I can have them documented and sent to the team that updates them. It takes the ones that see the action first hand (drivers, riding public), to help improve transit across the city in all forms.

For example, in Queens on the Q2 towards Belmont Park/UBS Arena has HOLLIS AV/217 PL as a stop. That is not a stop and should be removed.

For example, in Brooklyn for the B1 towards Bay Ridge/86 St has AV X/W 2 ST, 86 ST/W 11 ST, and 86 ST/NEW UTRECHT AV as a stop. These are not stops and should be removed.

For example, in Staten Island, when riding the S51 or S52 in the southbound direction, along Father Capadonno Bl the announcements play continuously between Sand Ln/Seaview Av. The stop coordinates are incorrect and need to be updated along the route.

I'm sure many here have noticed those type of errors on the bus, so please, post what you have observed.

Oh I thought you were saying a design similar to Montreal's Azur trains. This reminds me of TTC's Rocket trains. They even still have the spring connectors to add afterwards similar to the TTC trains.

The R211 4040-4049 is in production. The open gangway is there where the emergency doors are at place with the chains.

So you're saying the accordion piece is about aligned with where the chains are on the standard sets? So the gangway is almost designed like how the buses articulated piece is designed?

To that bold part, the Q70 buses can be used on the Q53-SBS (very rarely) only if the Q53 pool has select XD-60s in need of maintenance that they don't have any more to cover service. Otherwise, they stick to the uniformed units to assigned routes.

Video link is reference if this is what's being asked:

I am aware, but like I said its not a mixed pool. Obviously emergencies happen. A modified interior will work perfectly fine for the Q53 if service ever needed to be covered.

Starting May 1st the Q70 Will be Free Permanently to riders

This is great! Now...they need to modify the interior of these buses. They are not airport shuttle friendly at all! The Q70 is not like the M60 where they use the fleet on other routes. This fleet is solely dedicated for airport shuttle transport. They need to make the back section above the steps all longitudinal seating like the Orion VII NG Hybrids. The rear low floor section should be fold-able longitudinal seating on the left side of the bus, and the area right in front of the door should be a luggage rack. Then, the seats over the middle wheel axle should be removed and replaced with two luggage racks (one on each side). The section in front of the middle axle should also be fold-able longitudinal seating (like on the right side of the 1200 LFSAs). If crowds get excessive you can always fold up the seats (similar to the (L) train project with the folding seats).

    Lack of maintenance, simple.

I ended up leaving the car, the car was swaying left and right too abruptly between Hicksville/Mineola. I love trains and even I was a bit paranoid, funny how that car only had like 15 people and the other surrounding cars had 30+. I don't get why all the conductors don't report these issues, they see any flaws better than anyone else. I'm sure that wasn't the first day it was rocking that extreme, so that set should've been out of service.

  9. Man these M9s....I see why they are severely delayed and are going through such rigorous testing. These trains do NOT feel sturdy on the tracks anymore. When I first rode them Fall 2020, I was on 9053 on the Babylon and it was smooth like butter. I'm currently on 9076 and it feels like the train is gonna pop off the tracks, why is this car swaying so much!? Like damnn its like the other cars are keeping it on the tracks. Other passengers and I all looked up and around like wtf and then we relaxed when it came back to normal, but still this car is really rocking too much for my liking.

Anyone actually recall the roof height of an Orion 7.501 hybrid (regardless of which version)?

The Orion VII Hybrids are 132" or 11'.

    The XDE40s are 130" or 10'10".

The LFS HEV are 131" or 10'11".

    The XD40s are 126" or 10'6".

What kills me is that they never even bothered to install emergency intercoms in each car like the tech trains on all the R46's and R68's. That would have helped because the crew would have been notified and the police could have a greater chance of nabbing the guy.

People tend to cap for these cars knowing that they are rolling safety hazards and have been for years. Locked doors and no way of communicating to the crew is just disastrous .

(MTA) is going to be under fire when all of this comes out. People will speak out saying they were trapped because of the locked doors.

My exact sentiments! People talking about "I don't care what train model". Well if it was you in that situation you damnn sure would care.

I'm just glad nobody died. They said he fired 33 shots...did he do it right before the train approached the station? I'm just curious were people trying to stop him, or was he just shooting at the ground? everyone seemed to had gotten shot around the lower body area....so its not like he was shooting to kill.

Everyone got off the train and was standing around like he didn't just shoot people...normally people would be running trying to get out of the station, but everyone got off (mainly because of the smoke) and just stood around or got on the (R) train. So why weren't they as scared? What did he say to them?

Idk everything is just very weird about this situation...I can't wait to hear what people in that car have to say. The guy who is wanted now even has a YouTube channel and he posts videos about the evil in the world.

Ive been looking at some pics and videos on Instagram...... This is truly disgusting. I don't give rats ass what type of train model it was. Whether it was an R46 or R160 or a lambergine. The most important aspect of all are those innocent people young & old that don't deserve this act of violence.

Why? Why this? Why do these things happen. I have my personal reasons as to why Ive lost faith in the current state of society. But this is too much. My thoughts and prayers or for those affected in this hot mess. My prayers are also for the rest of the transit community. Please be aware. Take care of your self and your loved ones. 🙏

Train model actually matters in this type of situation. They were trapped on an R46 with no type of escape route. If it was an R160 some people could've switched cars. Makes me wonder if the MTA will consider unlocking those doors because these subways aint safe...cant be just stuck in a subway car. I will be avoiding R46s and R68s from now on because this city is not doing enough to ensure the protection of riders and I do not feel safe riding on a subway car that I can't leave if we aren't at a station.

In the past week, we have seen two additional pairs pressed into service. 9135-9136 last week and 9115-9116 on 1623 this morning. 9111-9112 and 9153-9154 seem to be running the most recent ends of the test train. Arch street training continues as they expect to be accepting more cars in the coming weeks/months with more employees added. The new goal is to have all 202 cars in service by April which is a very tight point to reach.

As we can see, that April goal was not happening. I don't even think my August prediction will be accurate with the M9 delays.

  14. Multiple undetonated devices found?? Makes you wonder what's lurking around this damnn system.

And the article said green smoke could be seen as the train approached the platform? What subway model what it? R46? R68? You know the ones that you're TRAPPED in...this is why I avoid them. Too much crazy shit going on down there to not have no type of escape route.

Praying for everyone involved in this bullshit.

As far as it goes, if the Q44 isn't out of West Farms (because I would certainly like to see CNGs on the Q44) in the end, then I don't care LOL.

    Which one? Kingsbridge?!

A queens depot, currently not running artics.

What depots have that batch? I wanna see how they are compared to the original batch.

They are all out of Meredith. You can catch them easily on the SIM15 and SIM30, but they pop up on the SIM4X, SIM32, SIM33, and SIM34 on a regular too.

So the option order for NYCTA don't have that (#1607-1629+ #1587-1606)? It's interesting that the MTA had spec'd the NYCTA units differently than the MTA bus company units. They haven't done that with earlier bus orders with the possible exception of the 2015-16 New Flyer XD60 artics #5364-5438, although they were of a different vintage than the other orders.

Nope, the option order has the regular seats. Charleston just started received their batch of 1607-1629, and they are the regular seats. I haven't been on them yet but I can see the seating is like the 2015 buses.

I just had to make that comment because as I was walking down the bus this morning the seats all in the rear of the bus have significant amounts of legroom then when you get to just past the wheelchair seats the legroom distance just gets cut in like half, especially on the left side behind the driver. That's where all the complaints stemmed. It's almost as if they were trying to spec to accommodate less than 57 seats, and then halfway they realized they needed to add another row and sacrificed the first half of the bus with whatever leftover space they had. Obviously I'm sure that's not the case.

Anyways, I'm gonna enjoy myself lounging in the back half seats of those buses during my commute. Everyone runs to the back seats now I've noticed. The back fills up faster than the front.

P.S. Yall not gonna believe what depot they have the new Q44 proposed to run out of when the redesign starts.

  17. I'm kinda madd the entire Prevost order doesn't have the new seat types like 1557-1586 has. The seats are very comfortable and the leg room in the back half of the bus has some great legroom and the seats recline significantly.

Its unfortunate that the front part of the bus has such bad legroom. The regular batch of Prevost have the legroom more evenly spaced between the rows, but it's not as good as the back half of 1557-1586.

Axles? Why does it only make that sound upon acceleration? Whats causing that sound? Something grinding or something not aligned?

Did the MTA ever loan buses to the WMATA? In the description of this video it says that bus 2656 (Castleton X3-45) was seen on a subway shuttle for the dc metro back in 2017. Didn’t find any pictures or videos of it though.

That video description said "I enjoyed this bus as this was only my second time riding the X3-45 (and first time with Greyhound, I previously rode an MTA NYCTA unit back in Summer 2017 (#2656)".

  19. 46 minutes ago, Cait Sith said:

No they weren't...those LFSAs were beat to death at CS. The only good ones that they had were the handful of 5700s and 5800s they got elsewhere. All of those 5900s rode like garbage.

But they sounded very good, LMAOO. :D 5266 and 5909, mann!

Anyways, listen to this XD60...Casey Stengel buses are known for some crazy sound effects. That Q44 is something different yoo!
