NYC rebuilding chief hopes downtown train hub can be built

NEW YORK - A New York City rebuilding leader says downtown Manhattan was promised a world-class city transit hub and he hopes it can be delivered.

Avi Schick, chairman of the Lower Manhattan Development Corp., said the agency is talking with the Metropolitan Transportation Authority about its recent announcement that a $900 million transit hub may not be built as designed.

The MTA said the Fulton Street Transit Center is one of several projects that have gone over budget; it is deciding whether to scrap an expensive glass-domed design. The MTA had hoped to build the Fulton Street facility, connecting a dozen lines and a World Trade Center hub, by next year.

Schick said Thursday at an LMDC meeting: "Lower Manhattan has been put through a lot and promised a lot."
