reelbigfish Posted June 3, 2010 Share #1 Posted June 3, 2010 The MBTA in Boston is planning on purchasing or leasing extra locomotives from the Utah Transit Authority for use on the commuter rail lines. It is about time. The locomotives are getting old and a large amount of fuel is lost due to the primary mover providing head end power as well as traction power on almost all MBTA locomotives. The new models will be the MP36PH-3C which is currently in use in various North American transportation authorities including Caltrain in the Bay Area, UTA in Utah, MARC in Baltimore/Washington, DC and VRE in Virginia/Washington, DC. Evidently someone planned ahead at the MBTA and the original bid was launched jointly with UTA so the locomotives are already compliant with the MBTA commuter rail system.
