Pakenhamtrain Posted February 17, 2011 Share #1 Posted February 17, 2011 From the Daily Telegraph Text the bus and avoid the rush # The Daily Telegraph # February 17, 2011 12:00AM IT won't make your buses run on time but thousands of Sydney passengers will be able to find out just when their service will arrive, thanks to a text message. The State Government will today announce the GPS-based update service will be launched across every STA and Metrobus route within a fortnight. The system is now being trialled on some Metrobus services. The new service will cost passengers the fee of a normal text message, a spokeswoman said. The system is linked to the Public Transport Information and Priority System (PTIPS) which tracks buses by satellite and helps bus services run on time by giving green lights to late-running buses. If re-elected, the Government said it would expand the technology to private bus services. "Forget waiting at the bus stop - send off a quick text before you leave the house to receive an update on how far away your next bus is," Transport Minister John Robertson said. The SMS response is based on real-time tracking of each bus." http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/news/text-the-bus-and-avoid-the-rush/story-e6freuy9-1226007193659 From what I've read there are a few bugs to iron out. Such as the responce time. Some messages have been arriving 90 minutes after a request was sent. Although with the release of the PTIPS some people have made good use of the data: http://69.164.197.20/sta/query.php Data relating to every single State transit vehicle on the road. And someone else has put the data onto a Google Map: http://www.flinklabs.com/projects/buses/
