Joe Posted August 16, 2011 Share #2 Posted August 16, 2011 The Shipyard Railway cars were ex-Manhattan Elevated. Pantographs were put on the top and trap steps were added. Two of these cars still exist (one is operable, IIRC) at the Western Railway Museum in Suisun, CA (near San Francisco.)

Joe Posted August 16, 2011 Share #4 Posted August 16, 2011 I have never heard of Manhattan El cars being arranged in married pairs. Where did you read that? addendum: perhaps you're thinking of motor/trailer configurations? There certainly did exist trailer cars, but no linkbars were used. Everything had couplers and traditional hoses.

Joe Posted August 17, 2011 Share #6 Posted August 17, 2011 Trailers were completely dependent on motor cars...they didn't have shoes on them at all. Along with the jumpers for MU connections, there was a high-voltage jumper for the 600V. This powered the lights and the heaters, and in the case of control trailers (money car G) it also powered the compressor.
