Automatic system signals the end for station's tradition

WITH its array of metal rods, mechanical levers, crank handles and chirruping bells, the control room at Eltham railway station looks more like a museum exhibit than a modern-day work space.

But the antique equipment, which has been in use for 100 years, is there to make sure Metro's trains don't collide as they travel up and down the single track between Greensborough and Hurstbridge.

The system has worked well for a century but, despite its unblemished safety record, it will soon be made obsolete.

Only a couple of inaccurate bits.

The Electric staff is only from Greensbrough to Eltham. From Eltham to Hurstbridge(or Eltham to Diamond Creek, Diamond Creek to Hurstbridge if the short section staffs are ised) It's a normal staff. It's the same that will unlock the Eltham to Hursbridge, Eltham to Diamond Creek boxes.

It's the last electric staff in use in Victoria. The last staff at all used on the Suburban network. One of only two places where semaphores are still used.
