A cracked pipe leaking fuel is believed to have sparked a bus fire on Oxford Street this week, and investigators say it appears to be a one-off incident.

Passengers described smoke and extreme heat filling the bus, on the L94 route from the south-eastern suburbs to the city, as it drove towards Darlinghurst on Tuesday morning.

After about 30 commuters scrambled off at the corner of Flinders Street, witnesses reported flames rising from the back of the bus and over the roof, leaving the engine door badly charred and the rear window shattered.
