Trains suspended after fire

April 29, 2014 - 9:09PM

Passengers are facing long  delays on major train lines in Melbourne's south after a fire broke out next to railway tracks.

The Frankston, Pakenham, Cranbourne and Sandringham lines have been suspended due to a fire between Richmond and Flinders Street stations, which had affected signal equipment.

Metro Trains said just before 8pm that passengers should also expect delays of up to half an hour on the Alamein, Belgrave, Glen Waverley and Lilydale lines to allow the MFB attend to the fire.

As I type the Frankston, Pakenham and Cranbourne lines are still suspended with Major delays on the Alemain, Belgrave, Lilydale and Glen Waverley lines. All were suspended for a brief period.

I believe the fire was in a cable trough. I had to go to Richmond to pick someone up and there was a citybound train on Platform 1 with the pantos down with another train sitting outside Richmond.
Buses had only just arrived.
Yarra trams were chipping in with express trams running from Flinders St to train stations.

This is what the scene at Richmond:

It looks like after a game of footy!
