A Pointless Slap at Transit Workers

For three days at the height of the December 2005 holiday season, New York City transit workers engaged in an illegal strike that stranded everyone who was dependent on subways and buses. It was maddening, dangerous and bad for the economy, and the union was punished for it. Now the city wants to keep the bad feelings alive by denying the union the right to collect dues through an automatic checkoff. Rather than continue the acrimony, the city should try to help usher in more peaceful labor-management relations.
