M. Friday 1986 Posted March 25, 2015 Share #1 Posted March 25, 2015 Hello everyone! I invite you all to come join me to experience preservation and restoration first-hand. For background, I am part of The Historic Railway Coalition, a group founded early this year comprised of volunteers, preservation groups, and organizations who have come together to provide information, share resources, and give support towards one another - be it manpower, fundraising, etc. Our aim is to also help make history come alive through education and hands-on experience in preservation and restoration through volunteer work. Last year, I organized The Preservation Experience, a series of events where transit fans in the community were sought out to help volunteer in the restoration of R16 car 6398 at the Trolley Museum of New York. That way one could experience what is like to help restore and maintain vintage equipment and the amount of work involved in doing so. Quite a number of people attended and the response was very positive. So much so that we want to run these events again. We'll be doing this at least once a month this year from April to October or November. Our first Volunteer Day is scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2015 at 10:00am at the Trolley Museum of New York in the upstate city of Kingston, just less than 90 miles (about 1 hour and 45 minutes by car) away from New York City. Among other things, work will continue on R16 car 6398, which is coming along very nicely and steps closer to complete restoration. We will also begin restoration of IND R4 car 825, which we aim to restore, repaint, and open up to the public by this summer. Work on the Whitcomb Diesel #9 will continue and we hope to have her in operation very soon. You can find out more about the event and news related to the event here: https://www.facebook...6413244613945/ You can see scenes of what work was done last year here on this photo thread: http://www.nyctransi...6398-year-2014/ And for those who are on Facebook, you will find even more photos of the restoration efforts of R16 car 6398 here: https://www.facebook...95825870512502/ Just join the group if you are interested. Thank you everyone and hope to meet you on 4/11! M.F.'

M. Friday 1986 Posted March 26, 2015 Author Share #3 Posted March 26, 2015 I'm joining, count me in! Is there a certain age limit? Absolutely no age limit. In fact, complete participation from all is highly encouraged. It is recommended, however, that you wear boots and long jeans for this - no shoes, flip-flops, loose clothing, shorts be worn as one will be walking along rails, metal, ties, and ballasts throughout the event. We don't want anyone getting hurt.
