Where did you get the idea that it is a conflicting signal?? I really hope you're joking?

    Example:

R10 sign with a 15mph sign at the same location.

The R10 is telling you that your entire train (10 cars) have clear the switch and you may now resume the allowable speed for the area which is 15mph. Come on.....

If it is just a Green R sign with a 15mph together at the same location like Dave2836 said that is telling you to resume the allowable speed for that area which is 15mph. It is NOT a conflicting signal.

There are quite a few locations like that. So you are saying a 20mph sign with a DGT15 right below it is conflicting????  This is exactly why you must know your signals and which fixed sign applies to you.

So where are those green resumes and 15mph signs? Got lines and station markers, or even round about locations? I’ve never seen a green resume with a speed sign yet. Been here 6 years and not once. I love to continue learning. Do you still work down here? I looked through the last seniority list and couldn’t find your name. Remember that list was restablished in 2015. I’m friends with a couple guys from the 1st class of the 8098 exam as well. I came in Jan of 13

The simulator prepares you for the real world application... Atleast the quizzes do.  The "train operation simulator" always frustrates.

Keep studying the books they give you, and believe when they tell you the Signals test is the easiest test you will take.  The hard stuff is on the road when you have to recall what you studied, apply in real life because not all the signals make sense.

Example: you see a 15mile per hour speed limit sign and then a Green R Resume speed sign together at one location.  Which do you adhere to?  Max power or the 15 miles?

Dude, where in the world would you ever see that conflicting situation? Been on the road all over and I have never witnessed that scenario. Is this what they are telling folks in school car now? That conflicting fixed signals will be right next to each other? If so, we’re doomed🤦‍♂️😂

Personally.......... IMO I think this is happening because of the directive handed down by Fernando Ferrer, the Acting Chair of MTA to streamline budget..........but, this time they are extending it to the Safety Sensitive Operations part also........

If you guys want to see that directive, go back a few pages and click the link..........

👋 I am a train operator, I’m pretty well versed in who’s in charge of what. That being said,  that bulletin wasn’t directed at RTO. If you read it, it explains essential positions are exempt. RTO IS ESSENTIAL 🤦‍♂️. My point, 🤷‍♂️. Just saying there’s no freeze for RTO. There will be classes and you will be called. Relax, it’s all coming around. I’m only on here to watch for my wife’s cousin being called and possibly give some insight. I’m just gonna watch from this point on. Y’all seem to have it under control 🤦‍♂️. Good luck😉

U guys really think feb being 2-3days short of a reg full month is a reason for why they might skip that month lol. If they need people that wouldn't matter at all.

More than likely it was the amount of school car TSS’s available and timing. That’s probably why they made two classes in January. The April thing is up in the air from what I was told, but it looks like they are skipping it. But hey, what do I know😉😂🤷‍♂️

Why skip feb just cause it is a short month? I can understand maybe skipping bc there are two jan classes though.

I'm going to hope this is just a rumor and they're not skipping any months but if it is true then I'm probably not getting in til at least summer time with an 111x list number.

    It’s not a rumor. I was at PS248 Thursday and Friday and that’s from a superintendent 🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️.

  6. Just read a notice of an immediate hiring freeze. Tried to copy and post, but I can’t figure out how. All nonessential OC and Promotional hiring is here by frozen until further notice. “Represented operational positions that are essential to the provision of safe and reliable transportation services to our customers are excluded from this hiring freeze....”

Been reading a lot about preparation, kakabag, boots, how about food? Are there lunch breaks in schoolcar? Given you’re behind the lever all day how do you prepare your bags?

That’s not how School car is. You aren’t behind a lever all day. You aren’t even behind a lever😂. But regardless, you’ll have about an hour for lunch. Technically they only have to give you 30mins. Usually it’s closer to an hour. Not always though.

IMO, we will all have to do multiple pre employments. Just because we (1100 + list number) are getting called for pre employement right now means nothing honestly. I feel they are just canvassing a bunch of people to get people ready and have a handleful of people to pull from in the future. It’s common sense. What list number are they up to that are in classes ?400 tops ? So don’t just think this will just happen soon. They just want to have people ready with paper work and drug test, so when it’s time to pull people, they can do so fast without much delay. I’m 18xx and have pre employment in December and I don’t honestly see them getting ready to put me in a class no earlier than May-July. Just my honest opinion.

I understand everyone here is very anxious and wants to start the job like  yesterday, but we have to remain pantient and remeber that the MTA really sucks when it comes to the whole hiring process for jobs.

I for one am sick and tired of my current job (USPS) and have been here for 6 years and want out immediately lol. I am just continuing to bank my time in preparation to burn all of it as soon as the MTA calls me up lol.

Brother, they won’t hold on that long. Get ready for a Dec class with that info. At the latest Jan. It definitely won’t be May.

Agreed. You’ll get the rule book after you take your oath so you can get a head start from there but all the other books you’ll get from school car. Cause if you start reading material from other resources they may not be 100% accurate or up to date. Even the signal guide that is issued to you in school car there are some discrepancies but the rule book is “absolute”.

I’m glad you agree😉 where are you posting, A or B?

  10. Rookies can’t choose to be in the yard, that’s a super senior job, or medical restriction gets you there. XL couldland you a yard job sometimes, XX could as well, but your more inclined to the road so you can learn more. You post yards and then become YX(not sure if they are using this term anymore), but basically you are learning the yard with, preferably seasoned train operator. Doesn’t always happen though. I’ve seen guys still on probation that have gotten a yard job for the day and they are working with YX. It’s mind numbing to be honest. After 3 months( when I was YX 5 years ago, we were the second class to be YX), you go back to school car and finish with that. Then you road post. After all is said and done and all finals and practicals are passed, you are thrown to the wolves. It’s such an awesome feeling😉😂😂😂

A question for any current T/O's. List# 17xx here. I'm hoping to be called by the end of 2019. Are there any books or any other resources I could use to read/study in advance of getting called?  Very much appreciate anyone's help.

No, they will give you everything you need in school car.

This job is exactly for that type individual.

The type that don’t need to make a radio call about if they are going to Dyer ave or 238st

the type that know if parsons/archer or 179st is they destination

the type that realize if the rockaway bridge is open or should we shut it down at broad channel.

This is a high accountability job.

Just ask Robert Ray after the 14st accident.

Really one self education, not anybody holding your bootstraps on what you should be doing as a professional in the first place.

    This is dead serious.

You better be a self knowledge professional, NYC depends on you.

No offense, but you have no clue what this job is about until you’ve worked the job. Just cause you have family down here doesn’t mean they know what they are doing. I’ve met plenty of TD’s and TSS’s that think they know what’s what and then they get a hard check and have no clue. You get a wrong lineup and think you know you are going to one place and they’ve changed it all together, which they can do and you will be writing. Not asking questions have gotten many people platform and termination. Just a suggestion, don’t run with that I know what the job entails and what’s expected of us into school car or even on the road. New jacks like that get the cold shoulder and folks would rather walk away then hear, oh I know that cause my this or that. Don’t take this as an insult by any means. This is just a heads up. Working on 6 years here and this job changes everyday. Not my job itself, but the whole damn thing. Get used to asking questions, cause we all didn’t know shit when we were thrown to the wolves. School car doesn’t end, we are always learning and the only way we learn is to ask questions. Good luck, brother. I hope to see you down the road soon.

What makes this very interesting is MTA projected this list would be finalize i believe in july / august. We’re days away from October all that tells me is MTA may have met there needs as far as T/O is concern especially with the “L” soon to be shut down. They gonna have a lot of operators to spread thru out the system. Don’t surprise if a few years go by before you hear any info. Just my opinion of course.

Some advice don’t wait around for them to call if you really wanna work for the company get in any way. Because once your in you can move around the company as you see fit!

Nope, people are retiring on a regular basis and in bunches. As for the list and such being finished when they told folks it would be, welcome to Transit. Things get done when they get done down here. They are constantly calling for OT and they started a new class of TSS’s, so that’s more room. It’s just the transit way. Stay patient and by all means get in when and however you can. It’ll come along, slowly and surely. Oct will be a big retiring boom, people want to get there 5weeks vacation and leave off that. It’s moving along and you’ll be down here before you know it.

I never heard anything back from them since my PE back in May. I've never failed a drug test in my life, I don't do any drugs or take any medications. No reason to believe I would have failed and even if I did hypothetically speaking, I'm sure they would have told me by now. There is something else at play here and it smells fishy to me.

Yeah, not for nothing I’d go down there. Sounds like somebody dropped the ball. No quotas from what I experienced. Been a Motor for five, almost 6 years now.

Just throwing this out there... in orientation I see a lot of conductors and B/Os being promoted to train operators so that may affect the rate in which they are calling people off the OC list. Just in my class I think about a third are promotions.

Those being promoted could have come from the OC as well. From what I’ve heard, they are pretty much going down the line as if the list was established. Word is they agreed with the union to establish the list mid month, meaning July.

Bulletin 62-18 states the requirements for alternative footwear. Steel toes fall under the requirement. The previous footwear company offered steel toe boots for T/Os. I have purchased steel toe shoes and have had them approved by the Safety Unit. It's allowed.

I know the bulletin and the revised bulletin, I also know that T/O’s have Been denied bringing steel toe boots/shoes. It’s composite toe or nothing. Are you a T/O? And the previous company didn’t offer steel toe to us. I haven’t been here long, but I’ve been through two companies, to include the store front and not one of the Boots/shoes we were offered were Steele toe. I’ve been a T/O for only 5 years and change.

  17. 2 hours ago, Tricknologist said:

Steel toe boots are allowed, any protective toe is allowed.

No Doc lines have been needed for your own pair for at least a year. All you had to do if you didn't want their pair is to buy based on what they allow, take it to the Safety Unit to be approved and get a partial reimbursement.

That was rescinded like three months ago! Dr’s lines are completely needed starting in Oct 2018! And if you think steel toe boots/shoes are allowed have fun with that. There is a certain spec followed here. Not sure if you work for transit or what, but by no means are steel toe allowed to be worn as a T/O.
