  1. How come the subway map shows some rush-hour supplements ( (A) to Rockaway Park, (5) to Nereid Avenue) but not others ( (2) to New Lots, (E) to Jamaica-179th)? The only thing I've noticed regarding these is that the ones they don't show are a matter of terminal space, and the ones they do show are typically to provide extra service regardless.

  2. With the stations spaced apart the way they're planned, there's really no need for more than 2 tracks. When planned back in the 70s, it was to be a high speed line. We've becomes spoiled with the 4track system. NYC and SEPTA's Broad Street Subway are the only 4 tracked systems. If a 2 tracked line is successful with cbtc on the L, SAS doesn't really need it.

The Chicago 'L' Purple Line Express run is another 4-tracked line, but you're right, we've assumed express tracks too easily.

Due to a signal trouble at the Vernon Blvd- Jackson Avenue Station, there are no 7.gif train service from the Times Square-42 Street Station to the Flushing-Main Street Station in both directions.

Please expect delay in 7.gif train service at this time.

One Signal trouble caused the entire shutdown of the 7?!

What I don't get is, if the whole line is down, why they said "please expect delays in (7) train service at this time."

Isn't there NO (7) train service at this time?

I don't see why there would be complaints. It is just a train at the end of the day. They were running regular service on the Brighton right after 9/11 and when the Broadway side of the Manhattan Br was closed.

Exactly. In my opinion, R46's are even some of the better cars of the current MTA fleet. I'm sure 30 years in the future, there will be complaints about R160s. But the MTA can't operate rolling stock based on who will complain.

  5. The trains were pretty crowded from the Labor Day Parade. It'd be really awesome if next labor day the 5 could run to Flatbush or Utica. If traffic is a concern, keep the 4 express and the 5 local. Or just run extra 2 and 3 trains. Of course, I doubt the MTA would enjoy the $$$ spent doing extra stuff like this for every big parade.

Speaking of extra trains, does anyone think they might send extra trains on game days when Barclays Center opens?

  6. Another question: how come the (MTA) doesn't shorten platforms on the (G) already to at least 6- car length? I see so many out-of-towers running when the trains zooms right by them or stops short. Is it because of the occasional F reroute, or does the (MTA) think that Williamsburg, Greenpoint, etc.'s population will one day call for a lengthening?

  7. The problem is that the (M) and (R) would have to terminate on the express tracks inside Kew Gardens-Union Turnpike, which would block (E) and (F) trains. At 71 Av, the trains stay on the local tracks, go past the station, and turn around on a lower-level track near 75 Avenue, thus not blocking other trains.

Ohhh... makes sense. I do hate trains terminating on two different platforms, such as the Q at 57th on weekends.

  8. I say a return of the last W before it was discontinued (Astoria Local/Broadway Local), except it would be continued through the Monyague Street Tunnel after Whitehall with the R to Jay Street Metrotech. The MTA would build a short connector tunnel at Jay Street between the BMT and IND tracks, and the W serves as the Culver Express to Church Avenue, with a peak-direction express extension to Kings Highway. Like the last W, this would be a weekday-only route.
