I take this as a sign that the E-Wing trucks are fixed, and finally working as they should.

    This is spectacular news.

Kawasaki did what they were supposed to do, tackled the problem at the root(at manufacturing), so we won't have to deal with something like that in future.

Im Really surprised that something like that was able to slip by Quality Control... however, that could have been a "let's just get them out, deal with any issues later" situation.

All new equipment goes through teething stuff, so this isn't exactly a New Thing.

But the fact that nobody else has complained about the new truck kinda drives my point.

During testing, the EWing did Great, so why would they fail during full operations?

I think we pretty much have the answers..

It was Kawasaki's issue, lack of proper oversight.

Rushing to get the product out, so not to incur fines for delivery deviations..as they were incredibly behind schedule.

In any case, I am happy that everything has cleared up, definitely for the better.

Trains are arriving steadily now, and with the summer fast approaching, the A line will be choice to ride.

Hopefully by the turn of 2024, the route will be all NTT finally, and the C can get it fair share of new equipment also.

I believe the target date for build out is 2025..

I have a question for the board.

Is Kawasaki using both American manufacturing sites for the base contract,or did they split it, with Yonkers handling the 211s, and Nebraska handling the 211A?

The only reason I'm asking is due to seeing a few at Yonkers,as I was passing by on Metro North.

    Again, you guys are tops.

Because the trucks weren't tested, that's why.  MTA tested the pilot set with different trucks.  They broke the rules of structured testing by testing the pilot train, and then not retesting any changes that were made after the test and just put them in production.  An auditor would have found that.  If I did that I'd get fired for circumventing the rules and/or violating Sarbanes/Oxley laws.  To make it even worse, the part they failed to test was the main moving part, and these are much more prone to failure.

I had 4170/79 on a southbound trip to Far Rockaway last night. Her electronics were a mess. North motor end sign wasn’t working, meanwhile that set’s other end sign on the conductors position was stuck on, so a northbound conductor had a big, bright LED A in their face.

south half has the “exit this side” message, north half did not have ether version, but both had the correct side doors light up as we entered the stations.

    When all else fails, reboot.

Hopefully this program is available on all R211’s, I’m not seeing any changes on other sets

Once they have a program that they like it'll be released to all the sets.  No sense in distributing a faulty program before it is ready.  I wonder how they distribute it.  Is it over wifi or does it need to be plugged in somewhere?  Is it automated, does the train just pick up the latest code when it is within range?  Is it pushed or does it need to be pulled?  It isn't any different than with your phone.  Lots of different ways to update.

  4. Many  years ago on the BikeForums, there was a guy with the handle R600DuraAce and he used to boast endlessly about his explosive efforts on the bike.  Everybody else made fun of him.  In a thread that I posted to I said something about wanting more modern wheels to upgrade my bike.  Since I posted with my location I got a private message from this guy and  he had some decent wheels that he offered me for very little since he was also in Brooklyn and rode in Prospect Park.  He actually delivered them to my house and you know what?  He was actually the nicest guy, not at all like his online persona, which I now believe was just a put-on.  He continued to post like that for a few more years but then disappeared.

I don't know who Wallyhorse is, nor do I want to know, but he could just be yankin' our chains.

I’m willing to bet a good chunk of forum members here actually live in or around the Upper East Side or travel to/through there. They’re forming their opinions based on first-hand experience. It’s an opinion derived from second-hand information versus that.

I doubt many members live on the UES.  That's a pretty pricey place to live.  I go through there from time to time but that doesn't make me an expert.

But some development did occur in anticipation of the 2nd Ave Subway finally opening.  And I'm sure more development is happening between 96th and 125th in anticipation of the extension.  I've seen the Q train though going up that way in the PM rush and it was crowded but not packed.  The bigger crowd?  Going downtown from 72nd St from all the hospitals.  They used to have to either walk or bus to 68th/Lex and this is an easier walk to 70th/2nd where the entrance is.  I've done it as a patient before the Q train and it was a PITA.  Luckily I was and am fully mobile because the bus was packed too.

Yep. Not sure why some trains have been there for so long, though.

Probably because it is unnecessary to even do the work.  Even if not officially retired, mothballed or whatever, there are enough R211s to make it surplus.

  7. There seemed to be more historical talk on Subchat than this board, which focuses on current items.  But it has been down now for 3 weeks or so and my guess isn't coming back this time.  Or if it does, somebody is trying to update the platform and convert the history, which can be difficult.  Upgrades are a PITA even when you are just going to a new version sometimes.

I'm referring to the A train, which currently has 13 r179's (10 car) plus 9 r211's, or 22 NTTs. The A train will most likely be dominated by NTTs by the end of the month if all continues to go well with the r211's, while the r46's becomes the minority of the A train.

I count 10 R211 trains in service in the listing by Ale188 above, with 3 trains in testing, plus another 5 car set was just delivered.  On top of that the R211T trains are on the C.  So yea, it'll be dominated by NTTs.  I was on CPW last week and every C train was an R179 and every A train was either R179 or R211, except the last one I saw which looked like a dinosaur by comparison.

  9. How about this for speculation:

E/F on 63rd, with E to WTC and F as normal

M from Bway/Laf, up 8th Ave, to 53rd/Lex during weekday.  There's a diamond crossover entering the tunnel, but I don't know how far down, to turn the trains there.  Work needed in the vicinity of the stations can be done off hours when this is not running.  This will replace the E, which is a busy train from the east side to Port Authority and Penn.

    R as normal

G to Forest Hills using R179s from the A, which will be backfilled with the R46s that are no longer necessary.  This will allow some capacity to transfer at Court Sq, although my recollection is that this is a very long transfer.

    Practical?  Probably not.  Possible? Mostly.

But if this work can be done during the overnight or weekend hours only don't do any of this.

Surprised they didn't order a train or two more for fleet expansion, but this is the MTA we're talking about

To what end?  Unless they plan on expanding the line there just isn't any need.  And if they do plan to expand the line there will be plenty of lead time.

You mean 3520/3891? It’s been linked with 3810/1 at 38th since right after Christmas. Surprised they’re still there tbh.

Yea, that was it.  When I was returning home I saw that it was one matched set and one mismatched.  There was somebody right behind me so I couldn't slow down to look.

I need to go back to MicroCenter so I'll swing by again.  If it were warmer out I'd just bike over and take pics too.

  12. That's what I'd think.  There are R32s on the track at 37th St and Ft Hamilton Parkway.  3502 was one of them.  They look like they were prepped to be taken off property.  I was going to see what was there but there wasn't any place to do pull my car over.

Yeah we have to wait until the (M) is back to full service in May/June. I wouldn’t be surprised if no R46 cars “retire” until 2025, when enough spares have been saved up and the (A) should be fully NTT by then

I doubt they'll wait that long.  Why keep an entire fleet of cars when they are no longer needed?  Consider that in light of how they've been retiring cars even before their replacements are ordered.  The only reason to keep them would be if their disposal costs are greater than keeping them, and even then eventually they have to be disposed.  Pay me now or pay me later.

As I've said in the R46 retirement thread many times, they managed to keep up service even without the 11 R32 trains that were retired early.  With the R211s being a lot more reliable, assuming no more disasters, they won't need as many spares either.
