People think artics are like these massive buses that can’t handle what a 40 can. An artic bus is just longer not wider. I’m not versed in vehicles but I’m sure they’re engineered to run on the same streets as s 40 footer can.

Some areas might have weight restrictions that can be a concern is all I can think of.

I personally think that Artics in Staten Island are a bad idea, because of all the hills and hard turns most of the time. However, Richmond Terrace wouldn't sound like a bad idea.

Hard turns besides of how the bus looks is what artic's are good at. Only hills that really would be difficult is the s52/66 I would say.

The problem is depots on the island are not equipt to handle the artics as well as alot of routes would need bus stops adjusted or relocated to be longer.

Still wrong on BusTime though. I posted it in my group yesterday, so likely Road Ops saw it and sent out a memo, but who knows when BusTime will be fixed.

P.S. I know who handles BusTime too, so I don't expect any miracles that's for sure, let's just put it that way.

Why no faith on some issues? You claim improvement elsewhere so why no miracles here ?

Ok now lets go to the destination signs...SIM33 says Mariners Hbr - via N Gannon - Combination. Needs to add via Narrows Rd N, idk why they did not update that. The SIM4C sign still says via N Gannon via Richmond....cmon, can't tell you how many people got f**ked over when they found out the bus wasn't using the service road anymore.

I don't think many express riders are basing their trip on what a destination sign says. Maybe there are some out there but it wouldn't be alot. Most people would be checking out the maps on the website or tripplanner etc etc

I didn’t say anything about an order or a guidance now did I? Didn’t specify Staten Island either, nor specific depots.  There have been SOME improvements and those aren’t by chance that much I know. Staten Island is not part of it quite frankly, and in rating service, we gave Staten Island an F. I’m well aware of the situation on Staten Island, and our group or any other group won’t be able to single handedly deal with the issues there. It’s been a problem there for a longggg time, and will continue to be that way for reasons I’m sure you’re aware of, BUT as I said there have been some improvements in some depots and that is because of our group. I don’t want to paint this picture that we have a magic wand. It’s a simple thing of when you have lots and lots of people complaining, eventually something has to be done to address the issues. Staten Island’s issues go beyond any public outcry, that’s for sure. I’ll leave it at that. I’ve spoken to people on the inside and we just laugh about the situation because we all know the deal.

Well how else would " drivers now hauling ass due to my group" I don't see how any depot SI or not would just be magically hauling ass lol

Drivers hauling ass is definitely due to my group. We’ve made it clear that we want buses moving again like the old days...

Negative. There will never be a order or guidance to drive quicker. Union would have a field day is a understatement.

Whatttt, do they teach that in training or do you just have to know that being a driver? I've never seen that before.

Buses with the Allison transmission you can choose to limit the top gear to be is about all.

So if it's a 4 or a 6 speed you can set it to 2 or 3rd gear and it won't pass whatever you set it at.

I remember when KB first got the NGs the driver told a W/C rider the ramp wasn't working. Seriously doubt the W/C ramp was broke on a damn near new bus at the time...

NG lifts suck btw, but they do have a manual operation if the power does not work.

I don't buy it.  That was an express bus during the evening rush tonight. Where would a B/O get tape like that?  You know the deal and I know it too. I was speaking with someone I know who said that if they didn't work for the (MTA) they'd send that photo to the media. Absolutely unacceptable. I'd like to say that this is a anomaly, but it isn't. I have taken numerous Staten Island express buses during the PM rush where seats were clearly broken yet buses arrived in service. These buses are barely three years old and they look like this...

You would be surprised what done guys carry on them.

I used to carry a roll of duct tape and a multi tool when I had busses out of Yukon it was that bad. But never anything where they couldn't fold up the ADA seat. Maybe not move it correctly for a wheelchair but if it folds down it will definitely fold back up.

The picture makes me think the operator just did not know how to raise it up as it is slightly different than the local bus.

Lovely conditions tonight for express bus service:

Might of happened as it was already out? I don't see that happening myself. I seen allot of junk go out but not like that

This needs to stop. The goddam fare keeps going up because people don't pay their fare!!!!

Had to laugh at this simply for the fact that it reminded me of that guy that ran for mayor a few years ago, "THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH" that guy lol.

Here's another one.  Today's 1600 QM20 was hanging out at the terminal for 20 minutes for no apparent reason before it decided to leave.  So it left a 50 minute headway from its leader and a 10 minute headway from its follower when the headways are supposed to be 30 minutes at this hour.  Not to mention it got even later due to traffic on 6th Avenue this time of year.  As of right now (1700), it's just crossing the Queensboro Bridge when it should've been making its first drop offs.

How do you know the op wasn't on a personal?

I posted this in the Express Bus Advocacy Group thread, but in my opinion, one area that is underserved, and which could go a long way toward regional connectivity, is Staten Island toward New Jersey. Right now, it's limited to 34th Street (HBLR) on buses capped at 40 mph. What I propose would likely require about another 20-25 buses, but it would include full-time service to:

    • Newark Airport (weekday only service)
    • 34th Street HBLR (terminator service on weekdays)
    • Newark Airport via 34th Street HBLR (weekends)
    • The Mills at Jersey Gardens (weekends only with seasonal weekday service during the Christmas season)
    • Metropark (peak service only via Richmond Avenue, Drumgoole Road, Outerbridge Park-Ride, 440 and the Garden State Parkway)
    • Raritan Center (peak service only via Richmond Avenue, Drumgoole Road, Outerbridge Park-Ride, and 440)

I don't know if Newark Penn or Metropark (full-time) would be worth it to serve for Amtrak connections. The latter two are candidates to be contracted, although they could be operated from Castleton and parked midday at Charleston.

There are people who drive to work, or to EWR to fly out of EWR, who might consider mass transit if there was only a mass transit option.

Why even bother when there's enough difficulty involving inner city transit as is?

I don’t think UP and SC store buses at TU-100th anymore. For UP some of their buses are stored at MJQ or deadhead back to Bath Beach. As for Spring Creek, buses deadhead back to the depot.

I was only speaking about Quill.

  15. 7 minutes ago, Via Garibaldi 8 said:

Quill is only so big. Simply not enough space for all of that.  Aside from that there are already shuttle buses just for that where one B/O shuttles express bus drivers to that depot to get buses.  That depot is located all the way on the West Side, so you still have congestion problems. Not sure if this still happens but MJQ isn't the only depot where express bus lay over at.  I think OTH was used as well, at least in the past. Not sure about now though.

For all SI express busses and some of the x27/28 busses Quill is the only depot.

An idea just popped in my head.

I know that MJQ stores a good amount of Express buses during the midday so the deheads are minimal and the buses are more reliable in the PM rush. So how about having some Express buses permanently stay at MJQ so if a bus is late to Manhattan, an MJQ bus can cover for the return trip to minimize delays.

That's why there is 'work as assigned' busses already from each depot.
