  1. Yeah, I kept noticing that when some sets get delayed during its route, it slows down and slowly makes a stop and the announcements still go on when it is about to stop.

That's what I thought too, but I don't think so because sometimes the strip maps get messed up and/or the conductor programs when to set off the trigger announcement because remember, some lines do not have New Tech Trains and still use SMEE's like (A)(C)(G). Some lines use both NTT/SMEE Sets like the (7)(F)(J) and (R) and some lines have CBTC like the (7) and (L)

I see you joined our Asian kitty squad!! Welcome aboard brother!  :P

No. The technology is a piece of crap, but working within their current constraints I'd say it's the best working solution at the moment. Here are the problems:

    • It does not actually "know" what station it is approaching. The conductor or train operator must let the train know where it is starting and what route it is taking. The train will then use the wheel rotations to guess where it is. It will be wrong if:
      • It is running on a different track than what the program was expecting. The train will continue to annouce all the local station stops as it's rolling by them even if it is on the express track.
      • The train goes on a detour that takes it completely out of the set route.
    • If the conductor or train operator picks the wrong route or sets the wrong station, the train will happily comply with the invalid information.

Sure it has its problems what piece of tech doesn't? The issues you listed are very minor and there's multiple work arounds for each said issue. For something built 14 almost 15 YEARS ago  this tech is amazing compared to what was available back then.

Very primitive, indeed. As they install CBTC on lines, I expect them to install detectors before stations to trigger the announcements. With the CBTC equipment, the train knows exactly where it is at all times.

There's no need for that in the A division, and how is this tech primitive?

  3. I agree...There no way the transit authority will keep them in service..

But didn't they have a problem with subway cars doors opening on the wrong side back in the 80's.

Because something didn't happen back then isn't an excuse new problems emerge everyday, but I agree with Lance too. I wanna ride these trains while they're still fairly 'new' but i'm just too damn lazy to walk to the subway (3 blocks away)

  4. How are the automatic announcements triggered on the NTTs?

I'm assuming you mean when you're coming into a station and the announcement says "This is ___ street" All Ntt's have a computer/ detector to count the amount of times a wheel rotates to tell the train where it is along its route. Pretty awesome technology imo, whoever designed the R142's from a pure technological standpoint is a genius.

  5. On top of that, some of the higher numbered green-signed ones has a slightly different engine, Gleason's units with the regular series 50G and the WF units with the Series 50 MK-G. The MK-Gs sound different from the regs.

Can you tell me what's going on, I can't access the chat nor can I view or compose messages anymore.

  6. I've been leaving this topic alone just to see how a few planted words here are there can turn into some of the biggest rumors around with even "other" employees involved. I just do nothing but laugh. Nothing that has been said about cars being swapped out from the 4 and 6 line are true. Nothing said about this door opening by itself on the wrong side is true. An undesired pull apart in the yard did happen and it was sorted out. And especially this rumor about lawsuits.....LOL

Everyone should just sit back and relax.

I see what you did there...  B-)

  7. Word is the 188s teething problems are real... My info is from an A Division TO..

Trains have opened up on the wrong side... Uncoupled in service... And from the operational stand point they are injuring older TO's (wrist and hand injuries with the throttle) as they somewhat changed it from the 142/142a specs...

A lot of older TO's aren't even trying to qualify on them and with the next pic coming up soon a lot of guys are jumping ship to the B Division just to avoid that altogether... Smh

Uncoupling and opening up on the wrong side is just plain scary especially considering how packed the (7) gets at times. I hope Kawasaki can resolve those issues quickly before something goes wrong.
  8. Rode 7821 today... They gotta re-align those things that surround the interior LED's of 7821. It was out of alignment and blocked part of the sign, still legible though. Overall, that set pretty much has minimal vandalism and is still good as new.

On another note, while waiting for it at Court Square, 7833-7843 passed on the other side. I was sitting straight infront of 7839, with sharpie all over that stainless steal next to the windows. Breaks my heart that these a**holes feel like they can vandalize sh*t like it ain't worth anything.

EDIT: Out of curiosity, what happened on the R32 (R)? And if the TOMC runs tomorrow, the best picture one will take - express R188 in the middle of TOMC and an R62A, all three in one.

    You don't wanna know...

    Whats special about tomorrow?

I hope everyone else gets good pics because I'm in Philadelphia(Elkins Park-to be exact) and most certainly not coming back to NYC before Easter.

Same thing I'd like to know, by the park that's close to my house the police have issued a no parking zone.

  9. This...

...about 5 different car classes painted the same red color (and were more or less the same exact thing inside and out) and no one complains, but good heavens the NTTs look the same and everyone catches bitch fits

    Talk about truth...

Going from a R160B alstom (N) to an R62 (3) was just a depressing experience. Those trains buck like shit, have horrible suspension, barely audible announcements (even though I knew where I was going) and there's barely any room. I know I'm comparing two trains from different divisions & I'm not trying to replicate the R188 thread, but I think it's time these trains either retire or get overhauled.
