  1. Hello to all,

Someone I know told me that they was called to come down for the medical screening for this exam (4600) and while filling out the questionnaire they checked that they had higher than normal blood pressure.

Although All test taking was cleared including the blood pressure. When they seen the last doctor, he told them that because they expressed a blood pressure issue that they have to get tested( on their own) for Sleep apnea. Have anyone else experienced this type of situation during the medical screening for this title?

thanks in advance and good luck to all

    Hi all,

I accepted a job with the LIRR because another position I really wanted took to long to hear back.  Now almost a year later, I get a call for a "probable employment" screening for the MTA in NYC job I really wanted.

Can I switch jobs if I'm still new at my job with the LIRR (on probation for 1 year)?  Will either agencies allow it?

Yes you can, but you will have to Resign with the LIRR. Make sure you do your due diligence with the NYCT title before you give up what you have.

  3. Thanks man:

As far as Structure Maintainers, the class now has mostly Carpenters, but there are a few Plumbers, one Painter ( provisional ), and one Welder. I've been talking to allot of those guys. The class before this one in February had allot of Ironworkers. I was talking to about 4 of them on the day I was sworn in at 180 Livingston. They were waiting to be sworn in as well. I just missed making the February Track class by one person. I know they have the test open now for more Plumbers.

Thanks again, and your right, its a bit off topic but if any one here has the experience the application just cane out on 4/8/16 for SME ( Structure maintainer E) which is for MTA plumbers. And they probably will be hiring people from this exam as provisionals.

  4. Glad to see you guys did well. I wish you all good luck on your scores. I'm still scheduled to take mine on the 24th. Wish I would've gotten an earlier date like you guys but hey, I'll get it anyway. I just hope the wait after the exam won't be like Sanitation. I scored a 100.14 on that one....they told me to forget about it; not high enough.

Youre not lying i got 103 on that sanitation test my list number was in the 4000's lol. Almost 100k people took that test

  5. Just to give everyone another heads up. The instructors did mention the April class, but also the possibility there might be 3 or 4 more classes this year. The key word in that sentence is might. The February class, and the class I'm currently in has 27 people.

Again good luck to everyone who is patiently waiting, just make sure you have all of your stuff in order for initial processing.

Good job stevenyc keeping everyone updated although you already made it to a class, most guys on here just vanished once they were sworn in. I have a question do you know what trade the maintainers were that you were in orientation with? Example masons, carpenters, plumbers etc. They have been hiring alot of maintainers lately. Thanks in advance

  6. I started Saturday morning at 8am(my RDO).

Haven't gone home yet. I'll be here till midnight tonight. 40 hours$ straight...

Same here spike, 40hr in two days including paid sleep time... it burns you out though. Picked up some well needed OTO.

I dont think we will see anymore 5+ inches of snow anymore this year, its been really mild

  7. In class the teachers called it the tubes so just going by their terminology, but the gang I work with does work in tubes the L N and R line going into Brooklyn bedford the 2 and the 3 they do a few tubes I've only been in the tunnels so far sure it won't be long though

Got in a rail gang got a few other new guys that were capital days class before me and all got bid out now their workin nights on the rail gang. Guess it's better I started nights instead of getting days and use to that money then thrown to nights with no OT

Those guys that got picked out must have picked "x" or "temp" jobs those jobs are not solid

Hey dunnlick are you in capital or maintenance. Congrats. Spikemauler class ends December 4th

Upo were u able to get in capital nights? If so how do u like it?

  8. What type dangerous things did you see?

I Seen guys standing on the 3rd rail protection boards. Sitting having their lunch on the 3rd rail protection boards ( with their key chain hanging from the side of their pants). Thats crazy to me. Those boards dont even look sturdy. And u dont know when they can give. I have worked 17yrs union construction on the out side and i seen how fast an accident can happen. And 600 volts is nothing i want to play around with.

  9. Top of the morning all!!! Thanks for that honest update cptjcz .... This is the kind of insight that I like to read. Actual, honest feedback from people either already in the system or in training. I get all of the guys that are trying to keep everyone else's morale up and it's appreciated. However, realism is best. I noticed from the onset how slowly this list has been moving. I had slight doubts from the beginning as to my chances of getting processed with even a 95 score and a list # in the 21xx block and it seems as if those doubts are actual. The reason being is that I ride the rails. A lot. I currently work an overnight shift so I get to see a ton of track workers during my travels and these guys are OLD!! I mean it's very obvious that these guys are well past retirement age but they are still hanging on strong. Most of the guys have seen much better days and are stooped with age and slow and plodding but still working with enthusiasm, still cracking jokes and still conversing with each other about still being able to work for another 5 years or so. I'm going to assume that the MTA may have compiled some info in regards to age and possible retirement and issued another test along those assumptions but the guys had different plans in mind. I can only imagine that the upcoming conductor's exam will follow the same path. Oh well ... I guess it's time to put this test out of my mind. If I get a call a few years from now great. If not, it is what it is. SMH.

You are partially correct. Some guys can retire but dont want to for what ever reason. And other just came in at a late age 40+ and dont have the time in. Or you can have guys that didnt do the right thing with their money throughout their career and they are forced to keep working. Different situations...

  10. We're here to help each other and Dunnlick is on to something.

    I started as a Track worker when I was 22. I'm 45 now.

I had no kids, no second job, nothing requiring my attention other then my girl friend and pet fish at home.

I tried showing the old timers I could pull my weight with the He-man acts, tried keeping on the bosses good side carrying as much as I could handle. Plus, I didn't want to make to many trips up and down.

Now I have bursitis, a bad back, calcium deposit in the rotor cuff, etc.

Don't be a show off to much trying to prove yourself. There's plenty of time for proving your self.

For some guys this job if all they have going for them and it's their life.

Let the other guys help if they offer. It shows your a team player and you get to know the other guys.

Lunch, by the book, is between the 4th & 6th hour. In reality, by the time you get on the Track, get set up and start working lunch comes after the job is done close to morning time. Once in awhile you'll get a easy night and the foreman lets a few guys break off and rotate going to get something but usually the men vote to work straight thru.

Point I'm making is most guys would eat heavy in the morning after work and then rest and go home and go straight to sleep. The guys with kids had it even harder and pretty soon 5 years later half my class were now type 2 diabetics from not burning off heavy meals.

If that's caught on a physical for a promotion or return to work after being out 21 days sick or from an injury, then you'll be going for a medical every 6 months to a year.

Don't let the schedule / life adjustment get the better of you. Watch your health. Every aspect of it.

    Great info. Right here guys

  11. top pay right now is around 30-31. By the time we hit top pay 6 years from now it will be higher. However, if you are looking for more money just take a promo exam once you pass probation. Just keep over 50% of your sick time to be promoted and take a test. Or transfer to a different craft. Right now I think starting salary for train operator is at our top pay.

I thought top pay for track worker was $29 ( that could have been from the old contract). And yea all new guys got screwed with this contract, especially with pay raises and pension contribution but thats another thread. Also guys if you plan on seeing 80k in a year, be prepared TO NEVER BE HOME! Its rough when u have a family
  12. Ok. Finally spoke to the man himself. He tells me that since I was a former employee, my application is taking longer than normal and he's just waiting for my paperwork to clear from my former division. That's all for now.

Even if you miss the class coming up, atleast you know why. And that u are not just waitng home on a letter. Your time was not wasted going to livingston IMO. Good luck

  13. Btw. My boy was on wind detail the other day while on OT. Just to give you an idea of what type of stuff we will be doing. He got paid $45 an hour to watch the wind blow.

All you guys coming in, in October its a good time ( although oct 5 is a little better). November is filled with holidays and yall will be able to pick up some AVA'S. You will learn more about it in school but try and load up your ava and oto bank. It comes in handy especially during your first year.

  14. I hope I can flash it on the Metro North and ride for free - I'm paying close to $300 a month to ride it now but my current job pays well. It would suck to take a pay hit joining the MTA and still have to pay that monthly to ride the Metro North.

those that take merto north and the LIRR will get free passes....
  15. 180 livingston monday oct.5 at 730 for trackworker.(pre-employement) List 650-660. Problem is im already employed by transit for another position.

If you rather the current position you have just do what i did. Take your name off the list, then put it right back on. If not than take the track worker job. If you are permanent you should have a year to come back to your old posistion without loosing seniority. DONT QUOTE ME ON THAT CHECK WITH THE UNION FIRST..

  16. what's up dunnlick. Unfortunately for me the guy before me on the list was the last person to get sworn in for the 10-5 class. However, I was the first person sworn in for the 10-26 class. Took my photo for ID, got fingerprinted, and got my book for class. I'll keep an eye out for you in the system. So not so bad news for me and great news for guys who are waiting. There was 1 other track guy after me who got sworn in for track. His list number was 35#. So if you are in the 350 to 450 range you could possibly make it to the next class on the 26th. As for medical I wouldn't worry unless you have high blood pressure. They seem to take that pretty serious. My hand was broken 2 years ago and the doc didn't seem to care. After doing my hearing test, piss test for blood sugar, and blowing into a breathalizer type device to check my lung capacity I went to see a doctor to get cleared for service. My boy dunnlick posted that they make you squat and check all kinds of stuff. The other guys who were there confirmed this. My experience was a little different. My doc pretty much looked at me, checked my heart rate and said "your passed". The only thing she did was ask me a list of questions about my medical history. Good luck to all waiting. You may get a call within 2 weeks.

congratulations upo1, thats also good news that they have 2 classes coming out in October the list is moving
  17. Once you've completed Track school a temporary seniority list will be established.

It may have changed since I was hired but they use the day and time you are sworn in.

They wouldn't take someone who is ahead of you on the civil service list but may have been put on hold during the hiring process and started class months or even a year later then move them ahead of you once hired.

Once training is complete you have your "Mini pick." It's a list of jobs (Days, Nights, Evenings with various days off in all boroughs) that you will pick from in seniority order. The Mini pick will last until the general pick comes when all Track workers pick. At that time your added to back of the Track worker seniority list. Picks can be anywhere from 1-3 years long.

During that time you do have bid sheets that come out. If the person who left that position was seniority #400 then from 401 on you could bid with the next senior person after #400 getting it.

At the general pick you also have "X" jobs. Those are temporary jobs created that are over budget. once a permanent opens up the "X" job is closed out and you relocate to that permanent job. Sometimes they never close out and sometimes they do. It's a gamble.

Good info. Dp142 most people dont realize x jobs and temp jobs are a gamble

. Everyone in my class that had an X job fot picked out already (through pre bids). A few people are still on from temp jobs. If you get a x or temp job in a senior shop dont get comfortable. Atleast thats how its looks in my department.

  18. Also to everyone in this class, please dont do like all the guys in the previous classes, once u get the job you forget about those still waiting in line here on this forum. I been in the system for almost 4 months now for a totally different position, but i still give what ever info. I can ( when i can) to those that are waiting. Remember how u felt while waiting and how the info. From this forum helped..

Good luck to those that have been sworn in and to those that are still waiting to get called!

  19. I just got a return call from Charlie Moran from HR. I called him yesterday and inquired as to why I hadn't recieved a call yet. He told me to expect a letter in the mail. That's the worst news I could have gotten. It seems that my past transit record has kept me out of consideration. Good luck to the rest of you. I'll probably post one last time when I get the letter.

Before you go down there. Find out about what the letter is saying. Idk if you feel like sharing but did you resign from TA or was fired? If push comes to shove and u feel like u should have a fair shot get the union involved. Although your not technically an employee they might be able to help or get you a clear answer on whats TA issue with you.

Good luck, but dont give up they strung you along for so many years. You deserve an explanation
