  1. Just received my letter from transit to show up on Thursday the 12th (list number 33**). I’m currently working for the city, do I have to fill out the employment section of the packet that came in the mail, or does being a city employee makes me not have to not fill out the 21 page booklet?

Thanks but I know that. The reason I’m asking now is bc I don’t want to wait till orientation to find out that info. Was hoping someone on here would be able to help.

i wasn’t sure if you max out at $35 after 5yrs or not. If anyone knows and can help I appreciate it. Thanks in advance

Take a look at this chart for top pay info. I will also advise you to read through the the thread from beginning to end as there is a lot of good info in the previous posts.

  3. Wow, are you sure you’re in the right line of work? This was very informative I hope it doesn’t fall on deaf ears. Thanks for letting us know some of the challenges from a insiders perspective. I have really been debating wether T.O is what I want to do, I mean the pay is good but the constant stress that a small error can send you downtown and back on the streets (even after probation) is mind boggling. I’m currently on the list for exam #3600 and just took The recent T.O exam given this year and hearing these issues are really eye opening. Thanks for sharing and I hope the culture does change keep up the fight.

When I went on the Linden Yard tour this past Saturday (I was in the afternoon group wearing the "Cardozo Soccer" jacket), I asked the Superintendent about that and he said that if you have the license (which I happen to have), you might be able to get a job within the Fleet Division right out of class...we shall see...

Which CDL class do you need to get into the Fleet Division?

  5. Already did. Yes they tell you what they want written on the document you need for medical clearance. Besides that, the only test that seemed ridiculous is their breath test. Inhale deep and blow out as hard as you can. Never had to do that before for any physical.

That's actually a pretty standard test.

  6. So far there isn't any talk of increased or expedited hiring but it's still early.

Depending on your position within you see problems from within your own department. I've seen posts from people fascinated with the train cars blaming it on outdated cars.

From my perspective (M.O.W.) most if not all of the problems come from EXTREME mismanagement, lots of the "who you know" promotions into management and supervision in every capacity not actually knowing the job or spending anytime on the Tracks.

Thanks for your reply, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner but I've been celebrating my birthday. I appreciate all the insight that you shared, hopefully these things will be corrected due to public and government pressure.

  7. For the people on the inside, is there any talk of mass hiring due to the problems plaguing the system right now? I'm hearing that the city and state want to fix the ongoing problems with the transit system. I remember a few years back when the system was running like a well oiled machine, now everyday I take the train into work there is always some type of delay. Do any of you have input on what's causing these problems or possible ways of getting this fixed or is it beyond track work and the mismanagement of the system on a hold? (granted I do know certain info is not availble to the public but any insight is much appreciated)

  8. Thanks for the info Jchambers2120 I was unaware that they went back to 8094 this is very troubling news. I find it a bit nonsensical that they would take this approach after 8094 has been running for so long. I hope this is not the case with this exam, but given the circumstances we will never know until these list are established.

  9. The agency must consider all 1000 for promotion before they move onto the open competitive.

It does NOT mean all 1000 will be hired, but Transit must consider them all before they consider the first Open Competitive. Transit (or any agency), by Civil Service Law, is allowed to disqualify people for various reasons, but it must offer employment (or promotion) to 1 of the next 3 candidates on every eligible list (1 in 3 rule...can't skip 3 in a row). Other factors can disqualify someone too - anyone with an open disciplinary or court case, for example, is ineligible for promotion. Also, many people decline the promotion, which doesn't count against Transit for purposes of the 1 in 3 rule. So the list moves fairly quickly. A class of, say, 40, may go through 50, 60, or even 70 names on the list.

Once all 1000 promotionals have been considered, then the first Open Competitives will be called. Often, there is overlap, so it isn't uncommon for the last of the promotionals to be mixed in with the first of the Open Competitives, both in processing and once the class actually starts.

Rest assured you have nothing to worry about if you scored high on the Open Competitive test. 1000 promotionals may sound like a lot, but the list goes very quickly. Remember, they're up to over 6000 on the current O/C list, and previously, most O/C lists went up to 3000-3500. The high scoring Open Competitives always get called.

Thanks Subwayguy, that was a very informative answer, I'm gonna keep an eye on the promotional exam results. I know the list takes awhile to be corrected and established, but I would just like to gauge an estimated timeline.

  10. Once the List is certified it should be published in the Chief.

Thanks for the reply Tricknologist and Mtoman, I wasn't sure if the published the internal candidate list. Does everyone that passed the promotional test get called before the new list is established?

  11. Hey The Saniter,

Guess its luck of the draw. I have applied to 6 positions since October of last year including Locomotive Engineer Trainee which I previously mentioned. Haven't received a response for any of them but the 7th position I applied for was the Assistant Conductor Trainee on Feb 2 when the positioned opened and received an email today (Feb 10) at 5:11pm when the post is about to close for a test invitation on Feb 23rd (I swear I check that MTA website every single day up to 5 times as well as my email since October). Im currently a 27 year old minority who would love to start and finish a career at the MTA LIRR. Shout out to drenyce311, been following your progress as we have the same drive to succeed. Hope to make it through to the end in one piece.

Congratulations an good luck, I myself have been hounding the mta site on a daily basis and have never received an invite. This gives me hope.

  12. Dude you should of got your license when you were first eligible.

Got my permit when I was 16 yrs old & license at 17. This was 15yrs ago.

At that age, first thing you do is get your license lol...

Same here, it's really surprising how many people don't have one.

  13. IMO I believe the mta lowered the requirements and made the test harder. The last NOE for train operator asked for 5 years of (don't quote me on this but I believe it was continuous) employment. It is going to be interesting to see how much people apply, these exams have been racking up some extreme numbers lately, sort of looking like sanitation.

  14. On the NOE "one year full time work experience that has been continuous with one employer"

Does that mean if I was working with Company A full time for 6 years and quit in June 2016 to work for Company B full time, it won't make me eligible?

You will qualify because you worked 6 continuous years with company A.

  15.

TA has been doing a lot of provisional hiring as of lately. I think this what they're doing with S/A title right now. Calling people before they establish a list. They've been doing it with promotional titles as of late, as well.

    Station Supervisor Level I

    Thanks for the insight Will.
