  1. “What I would like to know is what the classroom training is like. Are there any exams? If so, are they hard? What's passing? What do you have to study?”

Well the hiring rush was both a good thing and a bad thing. Good that we got into MTA, bad in the fact that the classes are packed. Due to class size, the training isn’t the standard fare anymore. Class sizes have doubled and tripled.

You'll still get the standard materials, and go over basics. As far as testing, there’s no official “you must pass” test. You do have to be trained in flagging later on down the line and that’s something you must pass.

UPDATE : ms.robinson just sent me an email to come in on Thursday the 12th for the medical. should I disregard the letter I received today ?

Would definitely go by the instructions of the most recent message. So go Thursday.

And to all those waiting to get in, as many have stated in this topic, attendance is not a joke when it comes to the MTA. I’ve seen how serious this agency is in regards to your being at work. If you feel you might be late, call RCC. Absent, get a doctors note and make sure you call RCC a hour before your shift. They do not play.

  3. Walked the elevated structure today. While I know fiberglass is strong, its a different story feeling it flex under your feet from that high up. Not something i'd run to do everyday, but it's not something I would mind. Also hooked up the bank of lights to the 3rd rail while wearing the protective hand gear. Overall another interesting day.

  4. So first week of training completed. Went out into the subway today and walked from one station to another to perform our first clear up. Take your time, pay attention, listen to your instructors and it goes by without a hitch. Afterwards we recieved our Track safety certification.

Monday we’ll walk the EL. Looking forward to it.

Hey G13. How do those workboots feel? And did they keep you a full 8 hours?

I wouldn't say they're uncomfortable, just unwieldy. Mines fit to my size with room to spare for some thick socks (9.5).

Yea, we did the full 8. The boot truck arrived late, and seeing as we had a full class, it took most of the day getting all of that sorted.

I showed up last week for drug test only to be sent home. They rescheduled me but didn't mail the letters out in time telling so. Showed up today on my rescheduled day, only to be told there is no vacancy for this position. Was told to now head down to somewhere in the city to put myself back on the list.

Wow, wait, did you ever remove yourself from the list? What is your list #? Never heard of this happening before.

  7. So I just received another letter in the mail telling me that the revised date is now a week later, Friday, September 29th. Damn...

While I know it sucks to get pushed back, at least you still got a letter young

Ribb, where did you hear about the next class?

Btw, thanks for the info Rsk!

  8. Though you're always required to have your whistle on you as well as other PPE the main purpose of the whistle is for when your flagging even though they've begun to use air horns now on larger jobs.

Snow duty is not hard at all. It can be cold but not hard.

One attitude to keep in order to pass probation is if your asked to do something never refuse or say no. Say "I'll try" even if you're unsure or scared and go out and make an effort. If you can't do it then you tell them you're having a problem with it. That way you did not refuse an order.

    Good info. Thanks dp.

Question for those in the 9/11 class (or feel free to answer if you know), will you guys get a check on 9/21 or do you have to wait till 10/5? I know some places take time with their payroll and you might have to wait a full cycle to get the first paycheck.

  9. Hey guys this is my first post. I've been lurking in this thread for a long time while I've been waiting to be hired, which happened last month (List # between 1200 and 1300). I'm currently in the class of about 50 people that started on the 9/11, and one thing that the instructors have stressed to us is that transit is trying to hire at least 500 more track workers over the next year. Supposedly they will be doing new classes pretty frequently from now through May. Good luck.

Another piece of good news is that during orientation, it was explained that sometime in January and February, there will be a small pay bump of 2.5% everyone's base pay, which is great, since there are a lot of deductions (401k, union dues, etc..) on our bi weekly paychecks. Combined with the night differential, which currently starts at $0.95 and will also increase, we should be making a little over $24/hr assuming we work night shifts through the next years.

Good info. Thanks! I have a question though. What did you wear/was acceptable during your orientation?

  10. So the mail just arrived and I received a letter from 180 Livingston Street. Upon opening the letter, I realize that it's an invitation to come down to 180 Livingston Street on Friday, 9/22/17 for the drug test!! I couldn't be more happier!!

(List number is in between 2,800 & 2,850)

Nice! Congrats young, know you been waiting for some time.

  11. Any information on Sept 11th class? Or do you guys have information on the next class after? What’s list # did they call up to for medical?

I'm guessing the sept 11th class is filled already. I just finished medical and am waiting for fingerprinting. Next class is sept 25th.

Thanks to everyone who provided info, support, and hope during these long 4 years. Will definitely pay it forward and give info as I progress.

Good luck to all those waiting.

  12. How long does it take to get to "top pay"? I heard working with the wet saw pays good money, is that in Maint or Cap or both? Thanks.

    Believe it's 4 years. Not 100% sure.

Call and email came in from Mr Moran. Final processing next weds. List #143x

Ahhhhwooooo did you get cleared yet bro?

I'm just glad it wasn't something crazy like being DQ'ed or the like. With how fast things are going, I'm guessing they'll mail me after the sept class has started and maybe I'll get in the October one. Best thing we can do is just pass what info we have to each other. I thank everyone in this fourm for taking the time to add their experiences and information. It's been a long wait, and nice to know things are moving.
  14. I went down there today to see if anyone in the 1400s had been called for final processing. Turns out sometimes the computer system makes errors because when someone punched in my info, it said I didn't show for my medical. I told the guy there was no way I was mailed. I've been keeping an restless watch on my inboxes since I was tested. He went to another office, came back and told me that it was a system error.

So that could be the reason why someone in the 1900s got a letter.

  15. Great news guys! As of today, well yesterday just received my pre employment letter. Will be at Livingston on Tuesday. I am so excited after being on an outstanding cert for a little over a month now. Just gathered all my information as soon as I settled in

    List #19**

Congrats. You have to be in on 8/22?
