Random thought after JSQ rehab is finished would it be worth it to extend the 123 there, following the 84 there and back from christ hospital due to hypothetical complaint that they don't want buses ending in the residential neighborhood etc

Wouldn’t be worth it. 123s are empty as it is once they hit Jersey City. The heavy ridership is all in Union City.

  2. Even a fare card doesn't work well with the NJT zone system.

Say I have a one-zone ticket and a two-zone ticket both loaded onto my fare card. I board the bus and tap. How does it know how which ticket to use?

If the answer is "tell the driver which ticket to use," that's not going to work in the real world. If you are boarding a bus at Port Authority do you expect a line of 40 people to all state the number of zones they're going? It will delay boarding just as bad or worse as the scanning thing.

Mobile tickets are OK because you choose which one to activate before boarding. But forcing people to use a cell phone doesn't sit right with me. Sometimes I need to take the bus and my phone is dead.

The people running NJT are morons and I doubt that they thought any of this through. So the implementation of the fare card will be interesting to watch.

why? the 119 is fine the way it is.

I could see a benefit since the 119 gets really full once it hits Central Ave and tends to leave people behind at the last few stops. But they could run more short turns from JSQ to solve this.

From my observations the 123 empties out past Congress Street. They should be giving more trips to the 119 and turning more 123s short at Congress. I could even argue that all 123s should end at Congress Street. I know they want to provide service for workers at Christ Hospital, but they can walk to Bergenline.

I’d like to know who built this Meadowlands rail line and didn’t think of the fact that you can’t run it direct from NYP?

North River tubes are completely maxed out, you can’t run any trains from NYP to Meadowlands without stealing trains from another line.

Until they increase the number of tracks under the Hudson, building any new lines into NYP is pointless.

Does the person who wrote this know how trains work? Why would people want to wander onto a random platform?

What's preventing you from just buying a cheaper fare and staying onboard the bus? How do bus operators keep track of who paid to cross the river?

They will kick you off. If the bus is crowded or depending on the driver you might get away with it. But others will remember people's faces and they will stop the bus and make you pay more or kick you off.

In my experience the NJT operators are not scared to enforce the fare like how NYCT operators are. I don't see fare evasion on the NJT routes I ride. In NYC enforcing the fare is considered a safety issue.

    Absolutely zero brain cells involved.

Dwell time creates high costs. Management has never rideen a bus in their lives so they dont understand.

The same management that buys cruiser buses for busy Hudson County routes. Have you ever tried to get off an MCI with 8 people standing in the aisle? It’s absolutely awful. Nobody managing NJT has ridden a bus.

The 84P is a ONEBus route so the unit in question is not an ex Coach USA bus. It looks like the tap and go readers are not on the contracted routes as of yet.

I honestly had no idea, unlike the former academy routes the 84P actually shows up.

I feel stupid now but tbf, NJ Transit needs to make it clearer which routes have it and which don’t.

    Its been the weirdest rollout

Someone asked twitter if there was a video on how to use and NJT responded that they should call the phone number for help lol

I tried tapping today. I asked the operator if I could tap and he had no clue what I was talking about. Basically what I predicted. The drivers don’t know anything and nobody is going to use this.

  10. I think the difficulty with producing an NJT map is not the size/coverage area, since you could easily split the map up by county or other divisions. The problem is the number of variants for each route which is far beyond most other transit agencies. When a route has 8 different variants it is difficult or impossible to show on a map in an understandable way. The NJT bus system has an inherent legibility problem.

So, another follow up: I made garage pages for the Northern division garages. It was difficult finding the latest info, but I was able to put the info I found on these forums, TTMG's 2022 roster, and CPTDB to create pages that sort of give an idea as to what garages have active. It will have inaccuracies, but I hope that these pages can be good enough to give you guys an idea as to what's out there. Here's a sample for a page I made for Meadowlands (With the site itself having the other Northern garages open).

Please feel free to send ANY FEEDBACK. Every piece of criticism would be appreciated in this endeavor I'm doing on my free time.

The 123 is an exact fare route

I tried 3 different gates/turnstiles... Kept getting the same error.

FTR, I wasn't irritated at any one, I was irritated at the thought/instance of getting denied an exit from a RR station...

It's strange but if they didn't do that then hardly anybody would pay between NY and Secaucus. Would be like the HBLR on the honor system lol

  13. I've used tickets to Secaucus that have been scanned by conductors and never had this problem, I don't think this is intended behavior, probably just the turnstile glitching out. It's irritating to be accused of fare evading when it's not what you did but ultimately they just let you out and there was no harm done...
