Congrats! How hard were both signal exams?

For me it was a bit challenging because I don’t like memorizing exact wording. I knew what the signals meant and all, but you know they want it in their exact wording so it was a bit tricky for me lol

Having passed the final signal exam, I'm going to summarize the YX (yard extra) experience. Overall it was a pleasant learning experience and at the same time mind numbing especially when there's no work assigned. I could only study and review so much. I think working in yards is more valuable than relaying trains at terminals. Though the latter makes the day go by faster. I've had nothing but bad experiences at terminals. I had 1 guy passed out on drugs and one lady who tripped while boarding and busted her ass all over the place. On both occasions, I had to stay at the scene and wait for paramedics to show up. The lady who fell was during morning rush hour and I had to ask the horde of commuters to detrain, they were pissed off! Turned out she faked the injury because the TSS report stated that the doctor said nothing was wrong in the x-rays. If only those commuters knew.

Also, radio signals suck major ass. I almost got in trouble because apparently the terminal dispatcher was calling for me but I swear I didn't hear anything. It was a good thing that I was with a tss and he vouched for me cuz i was under his watch during that period of time assisting with the lady who fell on her ass.

My tours of preference are: evenings > mornings > midnights. There is nothing worse than watching the sun rise with no sleep. I dodged the bullet and didn't get any midnight shifts.

My highlights of YX was going down the road for testing trains with TSS Fingers from Jamaica yard to Bedford-Nostrand and back. He's one of the best in the system! Very eager to teach even though he's not a schoolcar instructor. I feel he's more qualified than the ones at schoolcar tbh. I was fortunate enough to have him for 2 consecutive days so I really got to get my R46 all-guns-blazing-station-stops down.

Since I'm from south brooklyn, I was also very fortunate to dodge the Bronx bullets and also got blessed for my last week. I was sent 3 days in a row to coney island stillwell terminal 😍

To wrap this up, today at schoolcar the superintendent walked in and had a real talk with my class. He said he was only looking for one thing from us: perfection. He mentioned the July and August classes having too many incidents during road posting and so the bar has been set really high. I don't think he was trying to scare us, but just reminding us that this is a serious job and that we should be on our toes. I agree!

TSS FInger is awesome! He’s always willing to teach and help you out. He’s a super cool dude.

Good thing they havent mention nothing nothing about the May class. We keeping it that way. Lol

i agree schoolcar pace of training is way too fast. Especially the first 2 months where they cram you for 2 practicals and a signal exam

Yeah. The pace is blazing fast, especially when you gotta learn a new language and all the equipments and signals and practical.

Take it from me, lol, she don’t have to do anything! She let us have it on Friday because of the July and Aug classes with so many incidents, it’s like know your stuff or it’s over for you! We went back today for Straight Talk and 2 other Superintendents pretty much said the same thing, it’s too many incidents and the attitudes and no accountability is getting frustrating! Guess the operators are trying to place blame on everything in the world but themselves!

Take it from me, they don’t want to hear none of that! The way the spoke to us today, be prepared for these evaluations, stay in your books because if you get a marginal, they will be on you after that! There’s a system, according to them, “green, yellow, red” to let them know which operators they need to be on top of. Like I said if you know your stuff you’re good, but you get better daily so brush up on the rule book when you can, chapters 1-3 are for us apparently, try and learn the routes lol that’s the hardest for me, but other than that I think everything else is smooth.

Did they mention anything about the May class ?!

Some people have to learn the hard way, unfortunately the hard way might be too late. Then the tears fall...

What imhim is saying is 100% truth. Shoot I agree with you and i'm a C/R. There's alot that I had to learn on my own that they didn't teach in schoolcar, but the bottom line is they're not going for that and at the end of the day we're just a number. Don't give them a reason to can you.

I heard a *rumor* (i don't believe it at all) that they were planning on bringing a promo to T/O exam out this summer, plus the rumor that the test out now was going to be the last O/C. Though I don't believe it remember this agency is a reactive agency hence all the bulletins that come out.

I hope they do though I remember when my TSS took us in the cab to show how to read the air guage and I got hooked on that beautiful sound SMEE equipment makes when you charge up a train, plus I'm tired of these damn passemgers haha.

Yeah I heard that rumor also that this test was the last open competitive exam they giving. Moving forward the T/O will be promotional only. *So they say* lol

the majority of the stuff you learn on your own. Schoolcar will never prepare you fully for what to expect.

I guarantee when a T/O comes out, they will only remember just a few lineups, and that’s a stretch also.

Lineup cards are my best friend right now. They never leave my book bag lol

Man over here in the B Div im hearing chit usually once a week about Incidents..

    There was one yesterday...

Some of these folks are listening to these crew room lawyers with their nonsense telling them "oh you'll just get sent back to Schoolcar dont sweat it"... So they think its all good they gonna find out...

    Gibbs is losing her patience...

She better have lots of patience then. If the mta wanna keep pushing out T/O on to the road that’s not ready yet then mistake will happen. It is what it is.

Ok so you were in the May class, that’s wassup. Yeah the retraining from what I was told isn’t like oh here’s another 9 months, it’s a few days, however they can just fire you if it’s incident related. Also there’s the option of extending your probation, the whole thing is don’t give them a reason to do either! Good luck to you and be safe out there!

Yup, I was in the May class. Yeah they definitely would extend your probation which would suck.  Good luck to you also, and be safe

  6. 1 hour ago, Imhim said:

Smh no need to get into specifics, you can’t say you super doubt something if you aren’t in the know, so I ask are you down here already? You work for TA? It’s a known fact that TA has brought back entire induction classes! In the case of incidents costing them money you think they won’t do as they please, being called back for more training is actually the best thing, especially if you’re open competitive! At least with the promotional people they have a title to go back to, open competitive they can fire you, again since you’re not in the union and still on probation! Hope none of that happens, everyone stays safe and makes it through probation and their time with TA.

It depends how long they going back to school car. When I say I doubt it, My initial thinking is going back for more then a month. If it’s for a few days then I guessssss it’s possible. I got less then a month to get off probation. Counting down the days.

  7. 2 hours ago, Imhim said:

It’s happened before! They can do wateva they want, everyone is still on probation, the title isn’t secured yet!

    Super doubt it !!! Lol

well which induction class?! I know bunch of induction class came out so far.

  8. 8 hours ago, Imhim said:

I understand but I’m telling you it happens because I seen it first hand! Had a guy in my induction class who failed the customer prep practical and his TSS gave us our practical same day and he was saying he knows dude is gonna fail and already told my TSS who was giving his class their practical like yeah this dude is shaky and he most definitely failed. But you know what honestly that’s not all on the TSS, some ppl just can’t get the concept of operating down. It happens the job isn’t for everyone.

Well that’s understandable. That happens all the time. That’s another TSS telling your school car TSS that that person is shaky and is going to fail.

In that other post,  you made it sound like your own TSS will tell other TSS’s that your operating is horrible thus putting a target on your back.

Thats the part I was saying, they wouldn’t do that because it’s gon make them look like a bad trainer.

  9. 14 minutes ago, Imhim said:

You’re correct, my fault he did say Road Ops, I read Road Posting, my apologies, still it’s not that serious to do that, especially if you’ve been having trouble operating already through school car, you know your TSS will tell the others and you put a target on ya back.

I don’t think they would be telling others because that’s would make them look like a bad TSS that couldn’t train his student well enough to Operate a train. It would make them look like a bad trainer. You get what I’m saying right?!

Lmao what the hell? You can’t be serious, are you? You do that and best believe you will have a nice conversation with a superintendent! How about you just come in the station under control and stop your train accordingly, it’s not that serious, are you on the job?

You won’t have a nice conversation with a superintendent. Road ops is a control environment. That’s the perfect time to do it. It’s just you and your school car TSS in an empty train.

If you do that during road posting then that’s a different story lol

    Facts brother.

To even think of doing station stops with human lives or clearing switches medically or  recreationally high is blowing my f**king mind.  I could care less about  legalization, YOU CANT GET HIGH AND BE A T/O. PERIOD.

My stomach is turning reading my iron on curves in yard, I couldn’t even imagine doing this job after a blunt.

    Smmfh.

If your stomach is turning while readin your irons, that means you gotta get better at reading irons lol

Actually just knowing MTA is only in nyc i doubt its federally regulated. State regulated safety position for sure though.

Mta falls under the federal transit administration and D.O.T does the drug testing.

I recently won the appeal. My list # is 63.5 due that I had 1 wrong only. My score was 98.333. I received a letter and I'm due to go in March 29. I have 2 pending tickets which would give me 7 points on my license. Does it matter the points ? I was told it doesnt matter as long as I dont owe anything and theres nothing pending

You just answered your own question. Those two tickets matter, you can’t have no tickets PENDING. They will put you on hold if you show up until you take care of the tickets.

You can’t have no tickets pending what so ever.

  14. Quick question.

Did any of you guys take the BOSS survey?!

I was reading that if you didn’t take the BOSS Survey then you wouldn’t get your score exam or list number.

I didn’t take my BOSS exam because I am in school car for train operator but I somehow still received my score and list number

Also,,,,, for those  that already attended pre employment...  How long were you guys there for? Trying to see if I can possibly fit something into my schedule for that day?

    Thanks

For pre-employment they said it would take all day, but I was out the door by 12pm even with the drug test. But I did go the other day for final processing and people was there all day for pre-employment because the lab was backed up, people was told to comeback within an hr for the drug test and that was around 2 and 3 pm.

So my suggestion is don’t make no plans for that day and be prepared to be there all day.

I see from this board that people with #'s in 400-500 range are getting called. Does that mean the MTA has gone through  that many people already?

A lot of people is getting disqualified due to having bad driving records or their paper work not matching up

Did the email for the medical state a specific time to go in? TIA

My damn phone acted up as I was moving the email to save and instead trashed it. I know I go in on Friday for medical but don’t recall if there was a time. I will most likely call tomorrow to ask if they can resend the email.

It will tell you the same time. 7:30Am
