  1. For those of you still waiting to be called don't worry they will get to you. Best advice.. start reading the rulebook as soon as you get it. You will be taught on the signal exam, practicals, quizzes and everything in between by your own study and the TSS, but knowing the rules is on you it's the most important part of working for the "Authority" because it carries through in all titles in case you want to move up. And please come to work, too many people are getting their probation extended for calling out. 3 months for a few days isn't worth it.

Congratulations. Keep it smooth and safe out there. I’m hearing of a lot of incidents where new T/O’s are getting taken out of service left and right for incidents.

Thanks, my class was spoken to by School Car Superintendent James and several Line Superintendents about operation. "No cowboy or hotshot sh**". "Let the signals clear in front of you, etc..". One guy I posted with said forget the aspect on timers, just watch the stop arm go down and you're good. 🤯

  4. Hey everyone! I just graduated last Monday from School Car and I gotta say it was quite the experience. Everyone here that recently started or about to start be prepared for a  boot camp like experience. I don't know you but I have faith in you guys. Build relationships with your class mates and put the work in, you got this.

My 2 cents on Road Posting is that it's great for learning routes and where the signals are, but the people you post with love to tell you how to operate. Operate however you feel is comfortable and safe, don't let anyone rush you either. Better to explain why you're late than you hitting a signal. For those people who are waiting, don't be discouraged you will get called.

Thanks to everyone on this forum for the help and advice. Be safe, no shortcuts or senior methods! Lol

    Peace ✌️..

  5. The list was extended a couple of weeks ago, Transit will continue hiring Train Operators just at a slower pace. This week is my class's last week in school car, there are about 5 induction groups after ours. Tss's are spread thin so hiring might slow down for a bit.

Quick update. List #47 .. Passed my medical today. Got sworn in and they want new hires to print the booklets out because they don’t have any physical copies. So plenty of pages to print but idk if I’m going to honestly. But anyways good luck to whoever is doing medical. Appointment was for 6:30 I left at 12. Wasn’t bad at all.

You might have to print out that book. It's part of your uniform and it would be considered "not fit for duty",unfortunately.

Nice, thanks for sharing. Are you working over 40 hours? Is there any talk about overtime… Also, what division are you in.

There is always overtime, as a student you won't really see any until you're YX and Road posting. I'm in the B division.

  8. Damn, reading these posts from the soon to be T/O's takes me back to the excitement and anticipation of starting the job. I'm still in School Car on my 3rd week of Road Posting and it feels like I'm a totally different person. To all my incoming classmates, be prepared to experience a combination of boot camp and school! That's exactly how it's going to feel like but you'll enjoy it with your fellow induction classmates. I'm nearing the end of School Car and will be on my own in a few weeks. I'm getting a taste of the real thing and it's an entirely different beast, late clears almost every day, no lunches, extra trips right when I'm about to sign out, praying that a signal on time clears at less than half the posted speed 🙏, 10 mph through a river tube because of flagging on that extra trip 😑.... Not ranting I just love what I do ,have fun in School Car, I love being on the road but I miss that class experience already. Congratulations to everyone starting soon and good luck. Filling out an exception sheet for a late clear as I type this lol. ✌️

    Hello everyone,

First off my condolence to the tragic event of the Miss who had the unfortunate fate while on the job.  RIP.

I had been lurking for sometime this year, and a few years prior when first looking for info. during the 7604 (T/O) exam period.
I just have to say y'all are a good supportive and informative bunch, thank to y'all for making the process a bit easier to understand.
My fault for never jumping into the forum as early as I should have, just know that others been asking the same type of questions over the course of time, which helped me(and others) as I had those same questions but through constant scrolling I found the responsive or answers.

However, I come now with a question because I am in a situation that I didn't see coming. Rundown, I got through the first 2 P/E and passed the medical, got sworn in and received a start date for schoolcar (so excited, and to be frank with a better pay, sure am). But now personal matter came up and can't make the scheduled schoolcar. Without getting into much, I'll have to act as a caretaker for a family member day in and day out , for not sure how long.

I am need of knowing how can I keep my number on the list or reinstated for a later date? Any info. I can look up or could anyone point me out to to keep my opportunity alive?
Please and thank you in advance.

I would contact HR @ 180 Livingston street

    rtoemploymentoperations@nyct.com

    or

    michelle.rivera-vargas@nyct.com

Let them know that you won't be able to work the schedule. Most likely you'll be taken off the list but your list # stays the same. Just reinstate your name through DCAS once your schedule becomes accommodating. You'll get preference when they select from the list again.

  10. Yeah, everyone in the group chat is talking about it and it's sad to hear because we are also YX right now. Reenforces how dangerous this job is, be careful everyone. No one specifically knows what happened, but please remember THREE POINTS OF CONTACT when boarding from the tracks. I do even while putting up barrier springs or crossing from one car to the next while the train is moving.

I wish it was still like this.  I'm in the A division and our schedule is 7am-3pm.  Our road days are in the middle on the week from 9am-5pm and then the next day a 7am start.  If you have a long commute the schedule is brutal.

Last week on Saturday July 30th, we had our first practical on new tech.  Next week Saturday August 13 we have our second practical on SMEE and then our first signals midterm that following Monday.  The schedule is so condensed.  There is so much to know.  It feels demoralizing at times.  My group are doing very well, everyone passing the practice signals exams at the Sim and we all passed our practical.  But it still feels so condensed and like you have no time to absorb the stuff you're learning.

Hey don't feel demoralized bro, I'm in the class ahead of you and we are currently YX. The more you work on your own the more confident you'll feel operating, things are going to start clicking. At the end of my shift on Friday I was asked to take a light train for a replacement from Church Ave to Jamaica Yard and back via the F line. I was nervous at first trying to remember where to announce myself and punch, but now I feel a lot more confident. It's not as bad as some people think.

You got Supts right in this forum and you posting this?

    Wow...

Oh forget it i just got a text they already on to it...:(

Yup, I was at 130 today and the TSS's asked if anyone was passing out PDF copies of the Signal exam.

Our TSS told us… they got their schedule for each class and what yard and TSS’ will be doing our walk throughs.

Thanks bro, I found out this morning we'll be at Coney island next Saturday. My TSS says we'll work on whatever the yard has available.

So I have my first yard practical in Coney soon…. What’s the chance of us getting a New Tech train? Lol I feel I did cuts and adds much better on New Tech, then 46 and then I struggled with 68 but I still did a good job but I’m worried under pressure I might mess it up if we get the 68’s…. Any advice would be great!!

I want to know the same, next Saturday is my first practical but we have no idea where our group is going or what equipment to expect. How did you find out the yard location?

P.S. you got this bro 💪

Yes I think the schoolcar pay should be 37.50 p/hour after tomorrow.

Yeah it's the final raise in the current contract. You can check it out on the union website.

    *EDIT

     This was meant for TA718

Great info! appreciate you telling us new hires this. I start tomorrow and i’ve already heard from the past that this is a really hard job. So I know to expect this to be tough. But of course we can not let it get to us and like you said just study and be early and it’ll be alright. Can’t wait to meet some of you guys.

No problem bro, I was in your shoes just over a month ago. It's not a hard job, just a very serious one. My class is right ahead of you so if you join the B division we'll more than likely run into each other at some point. You'll have fun operating the trains especially on your Road days. We get a raise tomorrow too!😁

Im guessing Tss Richardson? School car is fun, but you have to study study study........

Not Richardson, TSS Carney. Yep study, try to get the PDF version of the books from your TSS, makes life easier.

  18. For anyone who is dreading School Car you're already putting yourself in a bad position. It's nothing to fear, it's called School Car for a reason you're in school. The only thing you should worry about is trying to stay awake after lunch. I'm in school now and it's not bad at all. It might seem overwhelming at first but it gets better. Create good habits and you'll be fine. I have one of the strictest TSS who co-authored the current text books for school and I'll tell y'all what he told us," You're going to make mistakes, this is the time to be your worst as a TO because there's only one direction to go from the bottom..". Study and get there early, on time is late.

Medical. After medical do they tell you the same day b4 you leave whether or not you got the job ?

Once you pass your medical, you will finalize your paperwork, take your ID pictures, take your oath, fingerprints and you will officially be an employee of NYCT. Congratulations

Anyone know how long the training is what the schedule is like during training?

A division is 5 months now and almost 7 for the B division.  You'll get your schedule by the end of the first week showing you where to report. Times are usually 7 am, and 9 am for road days. Everything is subject to change though

How long does it usually take to clear a medical hold? Got checked for sleep apnea and passed will i still be able to get into the 5/16 class?

Don't stress it, once you have the results email "ecmro@nyct.com" with your info and they'll give you an appointment ASAP. BTW a June class has been confirmed, both May and June classes are going to large. I had 80 people in my induction.
