  1. What if the MTA goes broke and the Feds can’t lift it back to life, How to you go about  with the subway. What lines do we cutback? What lines to we discontinue? What do we do with the elevated lines that could be discontinued?

    Random thought regarding (J)(M) (Z)

In terms of regarding a closing lorimer and hewes and merging it ino 1 station and relocating Marcy ave to over the bus terminal

New station to Replace lorimer and hewes would be called Union and Broadway with free xfer to the (G)

The new marcy ave would be relocated over to the bus terminal  and a new y crossover would be added before the curve

Instead of stairs there would be elevators and ramps to platforms

There will be a Y crossover at marcy which will enable the (J)or (Z) to run peak express myrtle to marcy and skip stop east of myrtle to jamaica ctr

But do any of the stations east of Myrtle/Broadway , have historical protections.

  3. I have some proposals.

Extending the (D) to Co-Op City. (Not new)

Extending the Frankilin Avenue (S) to connect with the (G) (Not new)

Cutting the (R) to Whitehall Street, replacing Bay Ridge service with the (J) (Not new)

A Fordham Road - 207th Street (S) streetcar from Co-Op City to 207th Street (A), to reduce bus traffic.

A natural disaster hits, which causes the following:

-A landslide in the West Bronx and Upper Manhattan, crushing the (4) line between Fordham Rd and 170 St (majority of the curve from Jerome to River has been destroyed as well, leaving enough space at 167 St for trains in 5 car sets to properly terminate and reverse) and the (1) between Dyckman and 242 St. The portal to the 207 St Yard, alongside Dyckman and 207 St has also been partially destroyed, deemed unsafe for trains to stop in, but safe enough to operate through.

-Grand Concourse throughout various sections of Tremont and Mt Eden (where a street tunnel passes under Grand Concourse) have collapsed, striking the (B)(D) between 182-183 Sts and 170 St.

    - The 125 St Valley has been completely demolished, causing a massive tidal wave striking parts of Astoria, Hunts Point, and the entirety of Randalls-Wards Island. The (6)<6> between 3 Av-138 St and E 149 St has become submurged, and the street below the (N)(W) between Broadway and 39 Av has become flooded, deeming it unsafe for trains to pass through. The stations underground in the 125 St Valley are safe enough to operate through, but not stop at.

-the west side of Central Park and Morningside Park has been struck by a landslide, causing the street to cave in on the CPW Line between 86 St and 116 St, and on the Lenox Av line between 96 St and 110 St. (No stations on the Lenox Av Line were affected, just the tunnel connecting the line to the Bdwy-7th)

-The wave in Upper Manhattan caused water levels in Flushing to rise, causing the (7)<7> to flood between Mets-Willets Point and Flushing-Main Street. To avoid power failure along the entire line, the power has been shut off along the westbound track between Main St and 74 St - Broadway.

A landslide in Prospect Park has blocked the tracks at all nearby Prospect Park stations, which include:

    15 St - Prospect Park (F)(G)

    Prospect Park (B)(Q)(S)

    Grand Army Plaza (2)(3)

And finally, a landslide from Highland Park has blocked the (L)portal at Wilson Av and Broadway Junction and destroyed Alabama Av (J)(Z)

    In short:

242 St Yard, Jerome Av Yard, Concourse Yard are all blocked off

The entire elevated (1) train is destroyed because geography

The (4) and (B)(D) have been destroyed in Mt Eden, Highbridge, and Tremont sections of the Bronx

    (6) and (N)(W) in the sections near the 125 St Valley and Randalls Island are destroyed / deemed unstable

Lenox and CPW have been crushed by North Central Park (Lenox stations not affected)

(F)(G)(B)(Q)(S)(2)(3)(4)(5) are all affected by Prospect Park landslide

    (7) has been flooded towards the east; Corona Yard is unaffected

Hell Gate Bridge is destroyed, alongside the Park Av elevated stretch & Park Av bridge

    (L) portals are blocked & (J)(Z) is cut off between Bdwy Junction / Alabama Av

Reroute away guys! Try to provide as much service to areas unaffected. Bonus if you can figure out how to provide service to the (4)(B)(D)!

Try to not overload a single trunk line, as essentially all trunk lines except the 4th Av Line & Queens Blvd Line are affected in some way.

    (1) operates between 116th Street and South Ferry with an extended Bx7 to cover the area between 116th and 242nd.

    (2) -operates between 72nd Street and Atlantic Avenue, just for safety.

    (3) - inoperable

    (4) -86th Street-Atlantic Avenue (Shuttle Bus from 86th Street to Woodlawn and adding frequency to the Bx32)

    (5) - Dyre Avenue-3rd Avenue-149th Street

    (6) - Pelham Bay Park to Hunts Point Avenue, (Transfer to the Bx19 the to the (4) shuttle bus)

    (7) - Queensboro Plaza to Hudson Yards. Queensboro Plaza and Flushing Shuttle Bus.

    (A) - 59th Street-Mott Avenue

I will finish tomorrow, as it is my bedtime.

    Why though....

There's already that Subway - What if thread, if you wanted to make a game out of this.... If the "what if" scenario is actually a reality, then coming up with a solution/suggestion still lies within the merits of that game.

    Very misleading thread title.....

This for if the MTA reaches financial levels worse than between 2008-2010,

  7. Dear NYC Transit Fans of the internet,

Because of COVID-19, the MTA is losing money, which could lead to service cuts.

    Rules are,

Choose which lines to cut back and to change. Then show the replacement.

Foe example, let us use the IRT.

    *) Rush hours only

    **) All hours.

    (1) - no change, frequency cuts, limited short turns.

    (2) - Harlem-148* or Wakefield** to New Lots Ave. Local, all times. For service to Flatbush Avenue, use (4). Lexington Avenue and Bowling Green service eliminated
    (3) - Eliminated. For service to 148th Street, use (2)
    (4) - Woodlawn - Flatbush Avenue. Local, all times. For service between Franklin Avenue and New Lots Avenue, use (2).

    (5) - Dyre Avenue to 180th Street** or Bowling Green*. Express in Manhattan.

    (6) - Express service discontinued. Frequency cuts.

    (7) - Super-express service discontinued, Limited express service.

    (S) (Time Square) - discontinued, use (7) or M42

  8. Let’s make things interesting, by using future NYCSubwayv4 map instead.

A (3) derails at Junius Street-Livonia Avenue crashing time the (L) platform. Then Woodhaven Blvd (E)(F)(M)(R)(Z) burns down (all platforms affected) then all power in the industrial area of The Bronx goes out.

Then minor earthquakes happen across the city. (Be creative with this one)

    Reroute away

6th Avenue trains do not have access to the 60th Street tunnel that the Broadway lines use.  They use 53rd and 63rd.

Such trains would have to have been on what become the Broadway line tracks in Brooklyn.  That (D) train would have been caught long before it got to Lex/59-60.  Probably gets sent to 96th/2nd, goes back to 63rd/Lex and rejoins the 6th Avenue line after that.

    That said:

    (4) operates in Two Sections:
    Woodlawn-86th Street
Utica Avenue (New Lots late nights)-Brooklyn Bridge (some trains end and begin at Wall Street)

    (5) runs via the (2) between 149th Street and Nevins Street

    (6) operates between Pelham Bay Park and 86th Street only
Express Shuttle buses operate between Brooklyn Bridge and 86th Street.  For local service, transfer to an M101 or M102 bus.

Once power can be restored to the IRT tracks at 59th Street, (4) and (6) run to Grand Central and shuttle buses operate from that point to Brooklyn Bridge (though some (6) trains then end and begin at 59th Street)

    (B) is suspended.

    (D) operates from 205th Street-Bay Parkway.  Some trains end and begin at Bay 50th Street or 25th Avenue.

    (F) operates 179th Street in Queens to Kings Highway in Brooklyn.  Some trains continue to Avenue X and terminate (or begin) there.

    (G) is extended to 71st-Continental.

    (N) operates in two sections:
Ditmars Boulevard-Queensboro Plaza (free OOS transfer to Queens Boulevard Line trains at Queens Plaza).
96th Street-2nd Avenue, Manhattan to 86th Street, Brooklyn via the tunnel (local in Manhattan and Brooklyn),

    (Q) operates from 96th Street-2nd Avenue to Brighton Beach (some trains end and begin at Ocean Parkway).

    (R) runs from 95th Street-Bay Ridge to Whitehall Street in Manhattan only.

    (W) is suspended.

That (D) train was sent to the south side of the Manhattan Bridge by accident

So how bad is the damage at Coney Island, which yard was the (R) exiting?

    Otherwise:

(4): 2 sections; (Switch is N of the station) Grand Central  - Woodlawn & Brooklyn Bridge - New Lots Av or Flatbush Av (local in Brooklyn)

(5): all service suspended; (3) trains are rerouted to Dyre Av and extra (2)(3) trains are run during this time. Some (3) and (4) trains end at Atlantic Av or Utica Av.

(6): Grand Central - Pelham Bay. To reduce the possibility of a switch malfunction, trains signed as <6> will run express between Grand Central and 125 St, and between 3 Av - 138 St and Pelham Bay in peak direction.

Extra (7)<7> service will be run.

There is no (S) service on Track 1 at Grand Central.

All service in the Coney Island area is shut down.

(D): Bay 50 St - 205 St. Extra service is run during this time, and (D) trains run local between Atlantic Av and 36 St (Bklyn).

(F): trains run between Av X and 179 St. All trains will be rerouted to the 53 St Tunnel.

    (N): trains run in 2 sections;

Between Astoria - Dimtars Blvd and Queensboro Plaza.

Between Gravesend-86 St and Forest Hills-71 Av. (N) trains skip 49 St at this time.

(Q): Brighton Beach - 96 St. Trains run via the Montague Tunnel and Broadway Local.

(R)(W): service is suspended. To compensate this, some (D) and (Z) trains will be rerouted via South Brooklyn to 95 St. (Z) will be running local. (M) service is rerouted via 63 St to avoid congestion at the 36 St Interlocking.

    Extra (A)(C)(E)(1)(2)(3)(D)(F)(M)(Q) will be run.

    B82, B64 & B74 will terminate at Mermaid Av & W 20 St.

B68 will terminate at W 8 St - New York Aquarium station.

The entire station collapses, which in a chain reaction causes the (D) between Bay Parkway and the terminal to collapse, causing instability on the rest of the elevated line. And the (F) to collapse between Ave X and the terminal to collapse, causing instability on the rest of the elevated line. However the only damage on the rest of (N) was some power issues causing a fire at 86th Street, the (Q) between Sheepshead Bay and the Terminal to collapse, causing instability all the way to Franklin Avenue (S) (making it unsafe to run)

The (R) was the first morning rush hour train exiting Jamaica Yard.

  11. Scenario:

A drunk conductor on the Time Square (S) hits a (5) while deadheading to Livonia at Grand Central blocking all 4 tracks.

A (D) gets rerouted accidentally the derails at the switch outside the NB tracks at Lex/59 hitting a southbound (W)

Earlier a (R) exiting the yard details causing all trains to be stuck.

And to make matters even worse, the Coney Island Terminal collapses killing many people, causing a lot of the elevated lines in the area to collapse partially.

Sorry if I foamed a bit too much.

Overall, it’s plausible that a “doomsday” service plan might look something like this. But I’d like to suggest some tweaks to it:

    - I’d have the (5) run solely from Dyre. With the (2) still on White Plains Road, the peak direction WPR <5> would be a pretty easy cut (it was suspended during “Essential Service” phase).

    - I’d have the (A) go to Lefferts because that’s the busier branch and bustitute the Rockaways services.

    - I’d keep the (D) and run it as a 6th Avenue local starting at 57th/6th, then via its current route after West 4th (the (B) ran this same service pattern from 1968-86).

    - I’d also keep the (F) as a Queens-Manhattan service, terminating either at 34th St or 2nd Avenue. It would run express in Queens alongside the (E). Both lines’ northern terminals would be the same as now.

    - I’d run the (N) as the QB local to/from 71st Ave, then via 63rd St tunnel, Broadway Express and the Manhattan Bridge. Then in Brooklyn, I’d have the (N) run local to/from Bay Ridge.

    - I’d run the (R) to/from Astoria to Stillwell via 60th, Broadway Local and Montague. Once in Brooklyn, the (R) would switch to the 4th Avenue express tracks and run to/from Stillwell via the Sea Beach Line (the (N) ran this same service pattern from 1994-2001).

    - The (W) would be discontinued.

I agree with the changes to the other services. Though I really, really hope it doesn’t have to come to this.

I’d prefer the (D) to go a bit further north to 57th because Rockefeller Center will eventually become bustling again and I think it’s too much of major destination to completely eliminate subway service to, even if 49th St on the (R) isn’t that far away. And having the (D) in Brooklyn would allow the (N) and (R) to each operate only on one branch off of 4th Avenue, instead of forking.

I was still considering the (D) going to The Bronx.

An interesting topic.  Here is my ultimate doomsday scenario:

    (1) Reduced service frequencies.  No service south of 14th Street.

    (2) Reduced service frequencies.  No service south of Times Square.

    (3) Eliminated.

    (4) Reduced service frequencies.  Local service in Brooklyn terminating at Flatbush Ave.

    (5) Reduced service frequencies.  Service from both White Plains and Dyre Ave maintained.  Local service in Brooklyn terminating at New Lots.

    (6) Reduced service frequencies.  <6> eliminated.  Otherwise unchanged.

    (7) Reduced service frequencies. <7> eliminated.  Otherwise unchanged.

    (A) Reduced service frequencies.  Runs local in Brooklyn.  Service to Far Rockaway.  Lefferts and Rockaway Park served by buses.

    (B) Eliminated.

    (C) Reduced service frequencies.  Concourse local run at all times, CPW local, 8th Ave local.  South of Jay Street, (C) will service the Culver line.

    (D) Eliminated.

    (E) Reduced service frequencies.  Otherwise unchanged.

    (F) Eliminated.

    (G) Eliminated.

    (J) Reduced service frequencies.  No service south of Chambers.  No skip stop service.

    (L) Reduced service frequencies.  Half of rush hour trains will short turn at Myrtle/Wyckoff.

    (M) Reduced service frequencies.  No service to Midtown, terminates at Chambers.

    (N) Reduced service frequencies. From 179th, QBL express service, 63rd street tunnel, Broadway express to West End line.

    (Q) Reduced service frequencies.  Otherwise unchanged.

    (R) Reduced service frequencies.  From Forest Hills, QBL local service, 60th street tunnel, Broadway local to Sea Beach line. Service to Bay Ridge via bus.

    (S) All shuttles eliminated.

    (W) Reduced service frequencies.  Astoria - Broadway local service terminating at Whitehall.

    (Z) Eliminated.

To further account for budget decreases, certain stations on each remaining line will be shut entirely, and others will be shut during off-peak hours.  Walk to nearest open station.

Keep the (D) cut it back to 34th Street, and allow to (N) to go via West End and Sea Beach or the (R) to go via Bay Ridge and Sea Beach. Eliminate the (W) <6> (7X). reroute the (F) to go via Crosstown.

  14. 4 hours ago, CenSin said:

It’s bogus because they only hit the delete button on some colored lines while leaving a lot of other things on the map. The <6> and (S) are running, but the (7)—one of the busiest lines—isn’t! The (C) duplicates the (A). The (W) duplicates the (N). The Rockaways—the lowest ridership area—is still being served.

But other than that a few improvements here and there would make the scenario more believable. The (E), for example, might serve both Hillside and Archer Avenues (forked in Queens). The (C) might return to Grand Concourse. The (4) might be extended to cover the loss of (3) service in Brooklyn.

What would we do to the Rockaways?

Do we demolish it? Or do we leave it until the MTA recieves more funding?

Its mostly just for the visuals. Its designed to show how severe this upcoming budget shortfall will be. Remember in 2010, those custs only saved roughly 400-500 million.

I think subways will come out fine in the end, with further frequency reductions. Service was running during the weekend on most route every 6-8 minutes. That was cut to every 10 minutes in 2010. it probably go to every 15 min, if things really go south. Some express will probably go local and some locals will be discontinued outside of peak periods.

Buses however will be slaughtered. Express bus will probably be cut significantly. Probably included is major frequency and span reductions.

I enjoy your optimism. You calmed me down.
