Somebody involved in the union told me close to 500 train operators are retiring this year, anyone else hear this?

It's not possible. There are only about 3800 train operators total, in all 3 divisions. 500 that's like 15% of the t/os down here.  And there are only 5 months left of the year.

I haven't read a report but by rtoman saying this person may face charges coupled with something I heard about multiple crews being taken out of service after a body was found on the tracks, yes thats what it sounds like. It isn't the first time it's happened that I've heard. Probably won't be the last either.

To the ones coming in...it's a serious job. Treat it as such.

There was a senior guy who did that 15 years ago or something like that. He got charged with manslaughter. Not sure if that's what rtoman is referring to.

probation more than 1 year?   that's gonna be a 20% success rate. they are out of their minds
a lot of folks should NOT be on the road honestly.
    including yours truly.............heeeheeeheeeee

but that's ridiculous........ it's probably their new scare tactic to scare ya'll......probation has always been standard 6 months.  if you get into trouble....they might extend it

They are probably just trying to scare them like they did to us when we did orientation. I remember they said if you even close your eyes and look like you're sleeping, even off the clock, you can get fired....the first day of actual school car we went to CCY and I went to the crew room and everybody was sleeping with blankets and pillows lmao

Had orientation today.  Congrats to everybody else that was there too.  Quick question.  One of the people there said that the motorman training was close to a year.  I thought it was 6 months for A division and 8 for B.  Also is the best train to take coming from the bronx, the D?  If I'm not mistaken, it stops at Bay 50 street station right by the school. Please help

It's 5 months for the A and 6 months for the B. Who said that a tss??cuz nobody uses the term "motormen" down here, or at least I've never heard it.

Yeah exactly I've read the STARS report and everything they die was 100% wrong and then tried blaming a dispatcher... like the dispatcher drove down the stop arm at the home signal and kept it moving, which could of easily killed people. Some people aren't made to have this job sadly.

So true! And that guy didn't even get fired. He's restricted. But he's still here. But I doubt he'll survive this.

The dispatcher told me to key by the home signal. Lmao i remember in school car my tss took us one by one up to the home signal and asked how do I key by this. I’m sure that’s pretty standard so someone didn’t pay attention

You have to key by 4 diferent automatic before you even get to that home signal at Ocean parkway. When you do a Bravo lay up the dispatcher tells you "you have permission to key into ocean parkway ", usually just the first signal unless it says otherwise , so that the train behind you can enter Brighton each. That guy keyed 4 automatics and approach,  tried to key an home signal. Hit the homesignal. Then drove down the stop arm. Then he split the switch that wasn't set for him. And he said "I didn't do anything wrong, I had the line up" lmao.

They wouldn't be here but they cant find anything better..

Metro North is hiring though and some of yall think RTO XX Life is bad, ha Metro North XX life is worse and it takes YEARS to pick a steady gig...

I read that metro north test is super hard too.

Actually no, @TOSironi is correct. A single-day high doesn't correlate with a boom of consistent ridership. The (MTA) is looking to cut service, not add. The WFH model has contributed to the low ridership, and with the agency pushing to raise fares, it's evident that ridership isn't as high as it use to be pre-pandemic. I do agree 100% that the people working in RTO should get a raise, it's a lot of BS they're put through to get any sort of stability, and they rightfully deserve it.

I'm all for getting bigger raises, I was just saying it'd be hard to get that seen the current circumstances. But I do want bigger raises!

Ridership is not low, it was low during Covid but that’s just another bull shit excuse transit uses when they want more money from the government. They received a record breaking Covid grant of 14 billion in 2021 and another 6 billion in 2022. We should be getting raises this upcoming contract, if not it proves how weak our union is.

it's 40% lower than it was before covid.

I’m aware of it all, trust me. I’m living my life as I normally do until they contact me. If I ever get the call, great. If I don’t, I’ll be alright. I’m enjoying all my time now because ik it will eventually come to an end once I start.

you will have a life even after you start with transit. You will be able to enjoy a lot of the things you do now, maybe you will have less time and less control on when your free time is. But transit is not the end of your life.  It's what you make of it.

    thanks

With the current significant rise in inflation and cost of living due to the pandemic do you expect the next union contract to have a higher raise than normal.

ridership is low though, so it's gonna be tough for the Union to get higher raises, especially since they are already fighting  to stop the service/jobs cuts that are coming next pick.
