The (2) and (5) switch is one of the more common unplanned service changes. I usually see one every few weeks, and it probably occurs more often than that. I mean, there are so many different scenarios that can necessitate a switch, it's not a big deal.

I remeber the first time i ever took a train to the bronx, (2) and (5) trains were running express northbound on White Plains.

Not only that, north of E 180 St, (2) trains ran on the (5) and (5) trains ran on the (2)

I know this one's a bit old,. but the Broadway-Brooklyn-to-Canarsie-Line could very well work.  You would need to re-build Atlantic Avenue to at least four tracks and two island platforms (which as I remember can be done as not all of the old structures were torn down) where perhaps for example the (Z) becomes a full-time Canarsie line while the (J) continues as it does and the (L) terminates at Atlantic Avenue with a simple cross-platform transfer at Atlantic (in most cases) to the (L).

This route actually existed for a while in the 60's. Some (JJ) trains were rerouted via a spur onto the Canarsie line, however the spur did skip Bway Junction. Because the spur was single tracked, trains only ran towards Canarsie.

Theoretical limit? There are other factors involved in capacity like power, acceleration, and dwell times. So maybe we can't hit 36tph. I hope NYCT plans on stress testing CBTC on QBL to see what's possible.

dude are you the real vanshnookenraggen? i love ur website.

How many trains can QBL serve using 179th, JC, and Forest Hills as possible terminals?

    I'm definitely overthinking this but:

Given the fact that 179th has 8 tailing tracks, the yard access at Forest Hills, and the basic terminal at Jamaica Center

    • There is enough space at 179th St for (E)(F)(M) and (R) trains to all terminate there and each line would have 2 tracks to do so.
    • There is enough space at Forest Hills for up to 3 lines to terminate there, which means that if we have the (E)(F)(M)(R) terminating at 179th St, the (G) and possibly rerouted (N) and (W) trains could terminate at 71st Ave
    • 2 lines could terminate at Jamaica Center, and given the other examples, the lines would probably be rerouted (B) and (C) trains but not (A) or (D) trains since they are core lines at CPW.

So basically you could have 9 lines run on Queens Blvd, give or take a few due to station and track capacity. The lines i came up with were the (E)(F)(M)(R)(G) and rerouted (B)(C)(N) and (W) trains.

True, but service is split anyways. There's no need to keep (Z) trains only for rush hours and then calling it the (brownM) later since that would confuse passengers more. You need to keep them less confused by having the (Z) run all day and night.

Yeah, but if the (Z) runs instead of the (M), the (R) can't carry Queens Blvd local by itself during rush hour, the (E) or (F) would have to run local.

  7. On 2/11/2021 at 12:53 PM, Vulturious said:

You might as well have just kept the (brownM) as the (Z) still since there is no need to go and change it to that. Sure its running via the (M), but there's no need to even keep the (M) running at all, just have the (M) running only during the weekdays and other times the (Z) will continue to run. It's going to be running the same stops anyways.

The reason I used the (brownM) and (M) is because the (Z) is used for only rush hour service normally, so having the (Z) run on weekends and late nights would be very confusing for a lot of people

  8. (MTA)STATION AND TRACK RESTORATION

EFFECTIVE 24/7 FROM FEB 14, 2021 TO EARLY SUMMER 2021

The stations and track between Myrtle Ave and Broadway Junction are some of the oldest in the system, dating back to the late 1800's.

We are trying to restore these stations and track, so no service will run between Myrtle Av and Broadway Junction.

Because of this, service is going to be changed differently depending on the time.

    RUSH HOUR:

    • (Z) trains will run via the (M) to Middle Village - Metropolitan Avenue, making express stops west of Myrtle Ave.
    • (J) trains are only running between Broadway Junction and Jamaica Center, making all local stops.
    • (L) trains will be running more frequent service between Myrtle-Wyckoff Avs and Broadway Junction

    MID-DAY AND EVENINGS:

    • (Z) trains will continue to operate during mid-day and evenings, but will run local.
    • (J) trains will run exactly the same service as during rush hour.

    LATE NIGHTS AND WEEKENDS:

    • (J) trains will run same service as rush hour
    • (Z) trains will not run
    • (M) trains will run between Metropolitan Av and Broad Street, and will be labeled as (brownM) trains.

(MTA) TRACK REPAIRS AND SIGNAL MODERNIZATION

EFFECTIVE WEEKENDS AND NIGHTS FROM 5/12/2020 UNTIL SPRING 2021

The 53rd and 63rd St tubes will be closed for track repairs and signal modernizaton

    CLOSED STATIONS:

    • Lex Av-63rd St ((Q) tracks remain open)
    • Roosevelt Island
    • 21 St - Queensbridge
    • Court Sq ((G)(7)<7> tracks remain open)
    • Lex Av-53rd ((6)<6> tracks remain open)
    • 5 Av - 53rd St
    • 7 Av - 53rd St ((B)(D) tracks remain open)

    REROUTINGS AND SERVICE CHANGES:

    • (E) trains will run via the (R) between Forest Hills-71 Av and Whitehall St, the last stop
    • (R) trains will run late-night service
    • (M) trains run along the (F) and (Q) lines between Rockefeller Ctr and 96 St-2 Av, the last stop. (M) trains will arrive on the (Q) tracks at Lex Av-63rd St
    • (N) trains will run via the (R) line in Manhattan.
    • (F) trains will run along the (G) line between Queens Plaza and Bergen St
    • <F> trains will run local between Bergen St and Smith - 9th Sts.

EDIT: Forgot to mention no service at 2 Av, Delancey St, E Bway, York St and F platforms at Jay St

    • (E) trains running via the (R) sounds good on paper, but then you have to deal with (W) trains. That and (N) trains being forced to run local, in Manhattan which would mean 3 local service running because this is service running on Weekdays, too.
    • (R) trains running late night service during weekdays isn't bad either, but you have to deal with the (W) terminating at Whitehall as well so (W) trains need to terminate somewhere else. I don't see a reason to run (E) trains at all if that is the case because again, this is running on Weekdays. If anything, just keep the (R) running to Forest Hills with the (E) terminating at 21 St-Queensbridge. There are relay switches for it to turn trains around, I would still keep the (E) local in this scenario with the (R).
    • Nothing to say much about the (M), however, there needs to be another service running on 6th Av for this to work. The (M) can't carry 6th Av on its own, especially with it running 8 cars instead of 10 cars, which means less capacity it can run. The (M) also needs to run full time for this to work as well since you have the (F) running via the (G).
    • (N) trains running local on in Manhattan shouldn't happen, especially with this proposed (E) via Broadway to Whitehall, the (N) is going to be backed up a lot along with the (W) here.
    • If you really wanted to reroute (F) trains via the (G), you're going to have to force (G) trains to be extended as well onto QBL. (G) trains cannot terminate at Court Square while (F) trains run through it full time until Spring as both trains end up being delayed. Maybe running the (G) to Jamaica to make up for the lose of the (E), (F) trains are running express still in this scenario anyways. Although, I would just keep the (F) running to Manhattan anyways with it running to 96 St-2 Av with the (M). If possible, because of the congestion that causes for the (Q), maybe having the (F) replace the (M) or the (M) running to Lexington Av-53rd St and terminating there. Like 21 St-Queensbridge, there are relay switches that can allow for it to terminate there.

The point is to run service at its best with these reroutes, however, these reroutes can only work if it was weekend service, not weekday service. It ends up congesting lines, causing delays and trouble. My ideas are probably not any better than what you came up with, however, I highly doubt the (MTA) would have both 53rd St and 63rd St closed. It ends up making service on QBL much more worse than it needs to be.

The (W) is not a problem, as at the beginning i mentioned that it is only on weekends and nights, when the (W) does not run

The Hanover Sq station would be pointed away from Brooklyn and would require a sharp turn to go toward the East River, given that Water St runs northeast-southwest. Maybe it would be easier to have Brooklyn-SAS trains branch off the main SAS line before getting to Water St.

There have been plans to reroute a second SAS service down Nassau Street, cutting the (J)(Z) at Chambers St and continuing into Brooklyn

The (F) and (M) both do this; the reason the (E) doesn't go to Brooklyn isn't because of its length, it's because the Cranberry merge is a shitshow. If 8th Avenue had local tracks under the river you'd bet they'd be sending service to Brooklyn without a thought.

My major issue with using the Atlantic Branch for subway service is; why? Neither the (A) or (J)(Z) is at full track capacity or full. Jamaica - Downtown Brooklyn - Downtown travel demand isn't very high and is perfectly doable today. Fulton local would be a shorter connection providing much the same benefit, and is already helpfully grade separated through the thicket of lines in Downtown Brooklyn.

I agree, not only did the (E) once go as far as Rockaway Park - Beach 116th St, having more than 2 lines with frequent service on 2 tracks is just a recipe for disaster.

I like the idea of connecting to the Rockaways considering it will mostly be used for Queens-Manhattan travel but I might prefer a direct North-South Queens line.

The North south line could end up as an extension of either the (M) or (R) by sending it south after Forest Hills, through Forest Park, across Jamaica Ave, and meeting the (A) at Rockaway Blvd.

  16. 20 hours ago, Wallyhorse said:

Best way to do 125 IMO is still to extend SAS Phase 2 all the way across 125 to at least where it meets the (1) at Broadway if not to a new Metro-North station at 12th Avenue (with stops besides Lex-125, also stopping at Lenox Avenue for the (2)(3) and St. Nicholas Avenue for the (A)(B)(C)(D)).  That also gives those on the east side a one-seat ride to Columbia University.

The Metro-North extension is a pretty good opportunity not only for a new 125th Street Metro-North Connection, but also a connection down to Penn Station. All it requires is for the curve into Penn station to be double tracked and maybe widened.

It's about time we hoped that would happen. The R211s will be the most luxurious subway cars yet, with open gangways, free Wi-Fi, and USB charging ports for phones so we can all commute in comfort and convenience.

If only that was available on system like the Washington DC Metro. As someone who was been there frequently, the only way to get constant WiFi is a hotspot. Only 50% stations on the metro have WiFi, and Cell Service is out of the question due to the depth of the system. WMATA was going to get their new 8000 series cars with WiFi if they were built by Bombardier, but when WMATA saw the failure of the R179, that job was given to Hitachi Rail

    1) if you’re closing the subway nightly to clean, why am I stepping around human feces at 1pm on these stairs at South Ferry?

    2) Why do y’all let meth heads smoke cigs and whatnot at the 34th/7th Av entrance?

    3) Ma’am, you have latex gloves, a face shield and a mask on. Why are you hitting me with elbows when there’s all these empty seats on this train?

    This is so true.

I'd rather a Parkchester - Throgs Neck - College Point - Main St - Jamaica light rail line, terminating at the AirTrain's Jamaica stop. This could transfer to some cross - bronx line on Fordham Road, so you can get all the away across the bronx on one and get all the way to the airport on the next line.

But how would it get across the Long Island Sound? A tunnel is out of the question, and another bridge would not be the best either.
