  1. I finally passed Schoolcar.  I am officially a Train Operator. I want to thank this forum and the many people that have helped me along the way and hope that they will continue to offer their advice. I want to thank RTOPRO, RTOMan, PATCOman, Etrain, Beneka, Cybeatsul, BrianRichards, Dandre and last but certainly not least a big shout out to SUBWAYGUY.  My apologies if I missed anyone I am going off memory.

It will be a new experience from this point on now since I will be on my own. :). I can't wait !

You're welcome and good luck!  I hope to see you out there!

  2. Got questions for the guys who started in July or any previous new guys.....

About to start on Monday for Aug class.

    1. It says to wear a blue button down dress shirt......Light blue or dark blue?

    2. Blue or black pants.......now I have both black dress pants and navy blue cargo slacks. Which would be preferred?

    3. What as far as docs or paperwork besides my payroll hire sheet should I bring with me?

    4. About how far into the 1st week will we get our uniforms?

    5. Doing a lot of OT on my final week at current job to have a some extra cash, from day one till when is a first paycheck?,

    1 and 2. Either one

    4. You will get measured for your uniforms on either the second or third day.  They will be delivered via UPS at some point (I'm not sure how long).

    5. Next week is a pay week, so you will get your first pay check on your third Thursday.

I would also like to add a question, would we get a metrocard (i would understand us getting one) what about SO/wife/husbands?

The Metrocard is only for you and nobody else in your household.

  3. I noticed that if you're on a southbound (N) train, the left hand side doors don't open after 14st-Union Square until Coney Island.

Likewise, if you are on a northbound D train that is express in the Bronx, the left hand side doors don't open after 9th Avenue until Bedford Park.

  4. You are not alone on that. Maybe it's the repetitiveness combined with the verbose nature of the announcements.

@YankeesPwnMets: That's not really all that surprising, given that she's done various recordings for several different transit systems and airports around the world. Check out this piece from the New York Times for more.

Thats the reason why I don't like those canned announcements.

  5. Had 3925 on my (C) home tonight. That's the one with cranks on the rollsigns. Signs were all messed up, so I had an excuse to turn those cranks back to the (C) 's terminals without technically breaking the rules. Might have left them as the <C>, but close enough...

3740's signs are still set for the (A), btw.

I also saw this on the C today.

  6. At forest hills I looked carefully under the late night E sign on the local track and I read G To 179 St via Local Late Nights The G ran to 179 St in the late 80s and '90s. The F went to 57 St or 21 St I also saw something weird, on the Queensbound local track at 71st toward the Western end of the station I saw an 8 car marker facing the western way. What would be a reason for this to be there? Using Tapatalk

It is used for a train leaving the turnaround tracks and going back to 179 or Parsons.

Where's the connection between the two lines?

Went to Broadway Lafayette after West 4th upper then went to Essex.

  7.

Grand CC / Jerome Av: The (4) and the (D) should be using those Express tracks. Easier fix with the (D), just run the (B) for longer. This would work mutually with both lines as it would take some strain off Brighton and Grand CC. The (4) would just never work, with the already cramped up Lexington Express, but if there were some way, that would be really useful.

Fulton / Rockaway: The Express tracks past Rockaway Blvd are actually perfect. I have taken the line out there a couple times, and noticed that people don't get out until Lefferts. Could be a bit useful, but the fact that the train would empty at an already crowded Rockaway Blvd would make this not work out at all.

Flushing: The (7)<7>, same thing. The Express cuts way too early. People just ride the train to get out at Main St or Shea Stadium, which is a VERY long ride from Times Square. If the service just changed from midday and headed out towards Shea Stadium, that would work out perfectly. I heard that they used to do this, but stopped because of CBTC.

Broadway / 7 Av: The (1) needs to have some sort of Express variant, call it the (9), from 96 St to 145 St. Everyone is just going to get off at 110, 116, or 168 St. But the amount of people that get off at 96 St from the 7 Av Express is insane. But they really need to do something about that, that is a waste of good trackage. I can't speak for the tracks above Dyckman though.

The 4 express idea won't work since that will skip too many important local stops (i.e 161, Fordham, Bedford Park)

There is no point in having the Lefferts A skip only 2 stops.  Plus trains are stored on the middle track during the middays.

The 7 is not all THAT long.

If people wanted a "quicker" ride to upper Manhattan/ Riverdale, they could just take the A to 168 and change to the 1, or even better, ride Metro North.

All because there are middle tracks throughout the system does not mean it is practical to run express service.
