  1. The S56 does not pass Mayfair Shopping Ctr.

Thanks for the correction. I've only been through Commack once when I was younger, so I don't know the lay out, not to mention that the S58 schudule don't mark Indian Head Road (where the S56 turns, for those who don't know that route) so I wasn't sure if it came before or after Mayfair.

It's likely the bus belongs to SBC, since a friend said that he's seen a few buses with a white back but couldn't remember the bus numbers.

  2. There was a new model 35 foot (or shorter) Orion with a completely white back at the Mayfair Shopping Center in Commack. I couldn't seethe number of the bus but the back was obviously a replacement, really looked like an (MTA) Orion and looked wired being a short bus.

I wouldn't be suprised if that bus from EBT was the bus that was hit by the taxi cab, That's my guess since I haven't heard of any other buses that would need a new back panel, especially I haven't heard of any of Suffolk Bus's 30ft buses (the only company that had 30ft buses that would be in that area.) being hit from behind.

(At least EBT buses) "follow us on twitter" is starting to pop up on the rear of the side body with with #sctbus (or something like that) and the twitter logo in between the stripes on the livery...

The 30ft buses at Suffolk Bus has them according to a friend who had 30ft buses on the routes he used on Sunday. I think it should be follow us at @SCTBusinfo

Money. If I remember correctly, Suffolk provides more county money for transit than Nassau does, but gets significantly less funding.

That's one reason. Another I think has been a reason since the system was started which was that Suffolk is simply to big to be able to have the kind of service that you see elsewhere.

  8. My proposal is a very simple one to understand

S54: An 8:30 PM, 9:30 PM, and 10:30 PM bus would be added northbound. However, these S54's would run to Ronkonkoma LIRR, via Hawkins Avenue (so there would be some more service in that area) and it would reduce deadhead time and still provide later service (the driver would still be paid, although a bit more, but with like 3-4 people on that trip by the very least, it evens it out (more revenue, but driver takes a while longer on the bus). These buses would run on the normal route until Hawkins Avenue.

The Rabro Dr/NYS 111 and the Wheeler Avenue/ 454 timepoints would be taken off the timetables.

BTW: The first S63 of the day does that (starts at Ronkonkoma LIRR and up Hawkins Avenue to Middle Country Road, and resumes it's regular route from there

The time point is Wheeler Road and Motor Parkway not Wheeler Ave/454. (and since the Wheeler Road Time point is technically a transfer point for the 3C and S42 it should stay.

While simple, you would have to explain why those three S54's would go to Ronkonkoma LIRR while the rest of the time it doesn't. (Just because the first first S63 doesn't it isn't a very good reason, I mean I don't even know why the first S63 starts out at Ronkonkoma LIRR.)

  10. I continually see cars from Babylon to Amityville (last town before Nassau) that have "official" license plates without any sort of County or Town seal...  So...

The only cars I could think of that would be like that would be a car that the County/Town/Village owned but allows an elected official use. I mean most vehicles's I've seen that County or Town workers have used have a seal on it.

Nah, It's got "official" license plates (EBT wouldn't be able to register their vehicles as official) this vehicle is either owned by Suffolk County or SCT.

Unless the car is still registered as being owned by the county.  By gave I meant that the county still owns the car but they gave it to EBT because the car was no longer useful to the county, (I mean I would think that most County owned cars would be 2008 model year or younger, the car in your photo looks early 2000's, I would surely think that no County or Town would keep a car that old in their fleet.) like with the Para-transit buses that EBT has.

a lot of companies would be more than happy to run the system with what is stated in the contract

I'm not sure exactly what Suffolk's contract with the companies states. The only thing I know is that they get a stipend for maintenance fees for their yard(s).  CBS Lines never seemed to use the stipend or didn't use alot of it, which caused them to keep getting audited by the county. Anything else I have no clue, though one could make the case that if the car did come from the county that if it were to be used for Driver relief that would count to operations.

  11. BTW this is the car that seems to have some sort of a supervisor or dispatcher in it logging bus times similarly to what NICE does (and LIB did)...

    crCYmdT.jpg

My guess is that it is a former County owned car that they county gave to EBT, and which they use to keep an eye on their drivers. Again that's just a guess. I mean all current county own cars I've seen have the county seal on it. (Just like most, if not all town owned vehicles have their town seal on it.) Though I could see that car have been used as a County owned car at one point.

If you get to Walt Whitman Mall you'll sometimes see what I assume is a supervisor or dispatcher with SCT sitting in the parking lot behind the bus lanes in the same type of car (grey chevy sedan with official plates) looking like the guy is logging in times the buses get to the mall. I've seen the same car at Amityville RR once with the guy outside talking to someone, he was wearing a white shirt and SCT jacket so i know SCT must use these cars as this guy wasn't a driver as EBT drivers have blue shirts that have a EBT logo on one arm and an SBT logo on the other arm.  Unless EBT supervisors/dispatchers wear white and the SCT allows them to use these cars.

BTW there is no county seal on the vehicle just an "official" plate.   I assume the car is owned by the County and given to the operators just like the buses...

Suffolk Transit doesn't have dispatchers. All Dispatchers are employees of the bus companies.  As for Supervisors, I'm not exactly sure how that term would work with SCT. If the guy isn't with the bus company then it's probably an employee in the transportation division of the DPW, I'm not sure if or how many people would be considered actually working for SCT on the county side since it's tied into the DPW (Shown with the Commissioner of the DPW holding the duel title of head of the Transportation department)

I know very little about EBT and the practices, though I would assume that if their supervisors had uniforms, it would be probably be white,  there would probably be a company logo on the shirt somewhere.

I've never seen EBT's logo, but I heard SBC just redid theirs. It's now a circle with Suffolk Transit or Suffolk County Transit written at the top and Suffolk Bus at the bottom.

But I know someone who runs the office for a parent company that owns multiple company (they all share an office) and I was told the DOT is very anal in situations where companies "share" drivers and office space...  They expect separate records, separate random drug/alchol tests, etc.  So let's say a driver drives both a school and transit bus, Educational and EBT must both keep separate records on the driver, both EBT and educational would have to maintain a system to randomly test this driver (technically this driver could come up for a random for EBT and come up for a random the next day for Educational).

I know may years ago SBC allowed their drivers who worked part time the opportunity to drive mini buses for STS for hours. I know this because my mini bus run (I joined the run late in the year after the original driver had left for reasons I had never learned) ended up with two drivers who said they did transit runs before getting in the mini bus, one (or both) said they did the 6A. (I recall the one who I defiantly remember saying he drove the 6A waving to the driver of the 6A one time when he passed him and the the driver of the 6A waving and honking the buses horn in return.) There was a third driver who did say if he did transit but I seem to recall him wearing a transit uniform and I believe I saw him years later driving the S61.

  16. Just an FYI, EBT uses a Chevy sedan with "official" plates (assuming the vehicle is owned by Suffolk County or SCT) for driver relief.

I wondered if EBT used anything else for driver relief besides the para transit buses. I know SBC at times in the past used mini buses from their sister company (and the company whose's name is actually on the Contract) STS and a Ford Crown Victoria, and CBS used a company owned Dodge Van. (The Dodge Van also went to CBS, though I don't know if they still have it.)

One sure way to know if it's County owned (Besides anything on the plates) is if there was a County seal on it. I don't know if all, but most County owned cars I've seen has the county seal on the Driver and front Passenger door.

  17. As Of 11/2/13

  18. if the County doesn't cut subsidies.

That would probably happen at some point. Especially if the plan to use the money from the state that isn't going to service, to cover the county's subsidies so they can work on bring down the budget doesn't work.

The Legislature called for a feasibility study of electronic fare collection. Where did that go?

I wasn't aware that a study was called for. My guess would be that A) it's taken longer then it was thought to do or B) the DPW somehow ended it.

  19. I'm surprised there hasn't been a bigger announcement with more media covering it.

I wonder what the delay in rolling out the service is, giving contractors time to hire/train the additional drivers or actually the funding in hand later than expected.

This is a big thing for the economy for Suffolk County with the added jobs and the ability for those who rely on buses to be able to go out and spend money shopping on Sunday's!

I wish instead of just Sunday service SCT would expand service beyond the usal 8-9pm and add more frequent service to some of the routes.

They were suppose to expand a few lines to run later, I'm not sure by how much. So far only the S66 had it's service expanded an hour later in both directions. I think that they are probably waiting to roll out any more expanded service to roll out Sunday Service. I only know that for expanded service they were going to use the routes that were listed for expanded service in the study a few years ago, which seems like they will since the S66 was on the study's list for expanded service.

As for the delay, I think they probably picked January because either it was easier for the contractors either for hiring, or maybe it gave them enough time to work out new driver schedules. (I mean besides the added run at 5:30 on the S66 to Riverhead, which makes one seemingly run express, they also did the same thing for the first S66 bus out of Riverhead in the morning (which is 7:00)

When I first saw the article with the picture of the S92, I had thought it was talking about how they expanded Sunday Service on the S92 and 10C til the end of the year.

Suffolk County Budget Expands Bus Service and Creates Jobs

    suffolk-bus-sct.jpg

Source: Suffolk County Transit. Sunday bus expansion will not only add service, but create jobs.

Last month Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone released his proposed operating budget for 2014. As expected, the budget included a $2 million increase in funding from New York State over last year’s budget-$24.1 million in 2014 versus $22 million in 2013-which, with the help of a Federal Job Access Reverse Commute (JARC) grant, will be used for the expansion of Sunday bus service throughout Suffolk County. This is the first time Sunday bus service will be provided throughout the County, though a successful pilot summer program was implemented on two east end routes beginning in 2011.

County Executive Bellone touts this unprecedented service expansion as one of the County’s “Key Recommendations” for the Department of Public Works, while including approximately $5 million more in County funds to the bus system as well.

Sunday service, initially expected to be rolled-out this fall, is likely to be pushed back to January 2014, however. While the delay will no doubt disappoint riders, Suffolk County Transit explains that additional drivers and mechanics must be hired in order to accommodate the service expansion.

According to Suffolk Bus Corporation, which is contracted by Suffolk County to run bus service and is the largest transit provider for the County, and data from the National Transit Database, the additional $2 million in funding could provide approximately 18,400 more hours of service, and also create roughly 30 jobs through the hiring of new drivers and mechanics.

With this additional funding injection into the bus system, County Executive Bellone is showing what happens when dedicated transit funding goes towards its intended purpose: more service is provided and jobs are created.

I was wondering when they would say something about the Sunday Service expansion.

  21.  Some routes, including the S58, may share depots.

That may actually be correct. I just heard that 1031 was used on the 7D/E yesterday in possible place of a bus that is on the route before the switch the 3:15 bus causes. If that is true then it proves a split since the 7D/E is most likely still run out of the Ronkonkoma Yard and 1031 is usually on the S58.

Also it is believed that 1058 is still the bus used on the 3:15 7D/E, which could prove that the S62 is split between depots since the 1058 was used on the 7D/E after being taken off the S62. Either that or it proves that the 3:15 7D/E run is run out of Coram.

  22. I see.  Are they marked in SCAT livery?  Interesting that SCT gives the operator buses to transport relief drivers and this is something that is not the operators responsibility (unless the operator buys these buses from Suffolk County when they are about to retire them).

Yeah they have the SCAT livery. I think the county gives them to the operator, I'm not 100% sure. (My contact didn't say how CBS Lines had gotten #2402, which is now at SBC, but they did tell me that they used it for driver relief. It was the only vehicle I believe CBS had for such purpose other then a company owned van.)

I heard #2217-2218 has operator EBT on them, or at least EBT is written on them, and that apparently you could see where Suffolk Bus Corp had been written on them.  I know that Suffolk Bus Corp had been using Para Transit buses for driver relief in the past, I have no idea if those buses had been active Para Transit vans or had been retired.
