  1. I'm looking at a scan of the 1997 map and the service guide lists the (N) as a 4th Avenue local during off-hours (evenings, late nights and weekends).

EDIT: After reviewing the early '94 and 2000 maps, I can concur that the (N) did run local on 4th Avenue during off-hours. Prior to 1994, the (N) was a full local at all times. It wouldn't be until the  (brownM) got booted off the express tracks that the (N) would get some semblance of express service that hadn't been seen since '86.

Yeah I remember the (N) was a strange bird back in those days- heck, I even remember seeing an R46 show up on that line once in the late '90s.

Also, I just realized I've never seen a station musician at any of the elevated lines- anyone else notice this?

  2. Any update on Phase 1 progress? I know 72nd Street is behind, and if you've been to Lexington-63rd recently, you can see the renovation's far from finished.  Won't be surprised if they push the opening of the east mezzanine to summer 2017.

  3. Okay, so the last three weeks there's been constant unannounced slowdowns on the (1) north of 96th Street during the mid-day.  Lot of guys in orange vests so it's obviously maintenance-related.  Here's the problem: not only is it un-announced, the train basically crawls at about 15 mph for long stretches all the way between 242nd and 96th Street.  What sort of G.O. is this? Anyone know what's going on?

  4. Today seems to be one of those slow news days....

-Dafuq? He shouldn't be robbing people, but how the hell is this a 'hate crime'?

  5. As some of you may recall, the (G) almost never ran to Forest Hills after 2001.  The MTA always claimed it was because of "maintenance".  But I just realized that's BS; cutting the (G) back to Court Square once the 63rd Street Connection opened was always their agenda and that's exactly what they implemented.  Pretty slick.

  6. Pedestrians need to be held to the same degree of responsibility as drivers.  No excuses.  That said, the whole Vision Zero package is a bad joke and should be done away with.  I mean, we're talking about a mayor who let his chauffeur hit 50 mph through red lights, but sanctions the unnecessary arrest of bus operators.  DeJesus had no criminal intent.  People need to wake up and vote Warren out...

  7. As long as my proposals aren't taken too seriously, then I might as well.  Here goes:

  8. But downtown IND trains move at 30-39 MPH from 125th to midway between 86th and 81st. That's where it is smooth/fast until midway between 86th and 81st. The slower part is around the bend south of 72nd.

For uptown, the trains go about 30-39 or so MPH from 59th until midway out of 103rd or 110th. The slower part is 116th, due to the curve between that station and 125th. Those timers only loose you about a minute or two. I've been on many (A)(D) rides where they get between 125th and 59th in 7 minutes so its not really as slow as others make it out to be.

If the (A)(D) don't go their usual speeds on the CPW Express and keep on braking, then its obvious that there's another train ahead which forces the timers to prevent the train behind from rocking and create more space between the two.

Yes, but I've heard from multiple sources that trains along that stretch used to hit 45-48 back in the day.  So yeah, compared to thirty years ago when we had graffiti-covered trains that were supposedly on their last legs, the current speeds are rather low, which is just sad.  Speed should be balanced with safety, but the MTA has tipped the scale far too much in favor of 'safety' in the past twenty years.

  9. Does anyone know what justification is used by the TA to keep the CPW express slow between 59th and 125th Street? Southbound is slower than northbound for the most part.  I know there's a major switch just south of 81st Street and there once was a derailment just north of the same station, but otherwise, I don't see the point of the express dragging it's wheels for sixty-six uninterrupted blocks.  The run seemed faster a couple of years ago, but now it's just become so damn slow.
