  1. All this will change when Mangano goes to jail. The contract with Veolia is going to be cancelled & the MTA is going to be taking over, funded by the state.

It's time to face the music. Transdev, whether you like them or not, is here to stay for a while. I do feel that they can operate a capable network, but the funding levels right now are so low that no matter who is in charge, the system will be a mess.

  2. I think it's Merrick Road/Park Av in RVC. To avoid having to cross Sunrise Hwy.

    N43:

-6:55 AM from Freeport to RF should be scheduled to leave at 7:00 AM to allow time for passengers on the N4 which arrives at 6:55 AM at Freeport.

-There should be 3-4 N43 Limited runs in the morning from 7AM to 9AM towards NCC and 4 to 5 in the PM from 3-5PM towards Freeport making Local stops between Roosevelt Field and NCC then stops at

    -Hempstead Turnpike

    -Front Street

    -Jerusalem Ave

    -Pennywood Ave

    -Freeport LIRR

These runs will leave Freeport 7-10 minutes before the local. From NCC to Freeport can take up to 45 minutes alone. It's an idea worth trying. There's a lack of Limited-Stop service on the North South routes.

    Elmont Flexi: Reduce to hourly.

    FCS: Eliminate

Oh... my bad. That's actually not a bad idea then.

As for north-south limited service, I think the n40/41 would be a better corridor to try it out on.

  3. I have my own list of suggestions.

Elmont Flexi: Travels along Rockaway Parkway/Avenue in Valley Stream to Corona Avenue

Mercy Medical Shuttle: Terminal moved to Merrick/Park Avenue. (It's worth a shot)

n43: extended from Freeport to Bellmore LIRR via Merrick Road during Weekday Rush Hour.

n48/49: Reconnect the Jericho Quad Shuttle with the n48.

I can agree with that idea for the Elmont Flexi. Rockaway is a faster, straighter road than Corona, is closer to more residences/businesses, as well as only a block away from the current route, so current riders don't need to walk much further.

    As for the other three:

-With the Mercy Medical Shuttle, why would you extend it all the way to Merrick? It's quite a long ways away, and I don't see how the shuttle will gain much more in terms of riders.

-The n43 could probably be extended during rush hours to Bellmore, but with the current budget situation, I doubt that would happen.

-I'd personally cut the Jericho Quad leg of the n48. If it MUST be kept, I would certainly switch to utilizing minibuses.

  4. One idea I had to balance passenger load between Hempstead and Roosevelt Field/NCC is to do the following:

-Mid-day n6x trips to/from NCC would be eliminated.

-The n15 would run via the current n16 route to Roosevelt Field. County Seat Drive service would also be eliminated as part of this.

-The n16 would run via Clinton Road to Roosevelt Field, then down Stewart Avenue, and would terminate at the East Campus bus loop.

-The n35 would remain as-is in terms of alignment, but instead of every other mid-day trip turning back at Hempstead, those trips would terminate at East Campus loop.

    Pros of this plan include:

-Balanced frequencies via Clinton Road (every 15 minutes with the n16/n35 combined)

-Probable cost savings (I'd imagine that even by extending some mid-day n35 trips, money would be saved by eliminated the n15 via County Seat as well as mid-day NCC service via the n6x)

-Improved service to NCC campus (currently, service to Hempstead is six buses per hour mid-day, this would increase the amount to seven buses per hour).

-Less bunching of buses at NCC (currently, the n6x and n16 arrive within minutes of each other, for example)

    Cons of this plan include:

-No more County Seat Drive service (This could cause some more crowding on rush hour n40/41 trips.)
-Slightly longer trip times to/from Hempstead

-Increased unreliability of n15 service (It's already a long route, and adding a big ridership generator will probably make things worse. However, need be, the n15 could probably sustain artics, as it has much more ridership south of Hempstead than the n16).

-NCC students will need to walk a few extra minutes depending on where they are on campus for more frequent service (they're gonna be quite annoyed if they typically use the Student Union stop.)

-Some trips at times during which classes start/finish (such as around 1:40 PM on Monday/Wednesday) will probably be overcrowded due to the more evenly spaced timing

  5. Here are some ideas I had (not including the proposed April cuts):

-n1: Eliminate service to Jamaica (yes, I know the n6 gets very crowded, but when the artics come online, things should ease up a bit)

-n6: Reduce mid-day and Saturday service to every 12 minutes (perfectly feasible with the artics), possibly reduce overnight service to every 45 minutes

-n6x: Only stops at 165th St. and 179th St. in Queens

-n15: Sunday service every 30 minutes instead of every 20 minutes

-n20H: Every other trip begins/ends at CW Post

-n23: Weekday service reduced to every 40 minutes mid-day

-n24: No service to East Meadow

-n31/32: Combined Saturday frequency reduced to every 30 minutes

-n33: Transfer service to the City of Long Beach

-n48/49: Eliminate Jericho Quad service on the n48, as well as reducing Saturday frequencies to every 40 minutes combined

-n54/55: Eliminate service between Sunrise Mall and Amityville and reduce Saturday frequencies to every 40 minutes combined

-n58: No service north of the Merchant Marine Academy

  6. http://patch.com/new-york/gardencity/nice-bus-plans-eliminate-10-routes-reduce-others-due-lack-funding                                                                                                                                                      "There are many other routes that will be affected too, but the adjustments do not rise to the level of require [bus Transit Committee] approval."

Since NICE had to go through the Committee to attempt to reduce Saturday frequencies on the n48/49 from 30 minutes to 40 minutes during the proposed January 2017 cuts (which, as we all know, were never passed), this means that we will most likely see changes in timing and interlining, though I am not certain.

  7. The n78/79 is most likely getting eliminated for the same reason that the n72 will no longer travel east of Route 110: NICE can not afford to provide transportation deep into Suffolk with it's shoe string budget. The n80/81 is most likely being kept to serve the businesses in Bethpage, and not keep Sunrise Mall without a bus.

It also appears that the n22a will also be eliminated now that the n22x exists.

An elimination of the n22a isn't that bad, especially if they convert some of the existing n22a runs into n22x runs or short-turn n22 locals.

But knowing NICE, they'll just eliminate all the n22a runs and add no n22/n22x runs to replace them.

  8. According to Newsday, the following routes will be eliminated on April due to the deficit in the budget: n19, n36, n45, n47, n51, n57, n78/79, Freeport, Hicksville, and Rockville Center Community shuttles.

Service will be reduced on the following routes: Elmont Flexi, n27, n70/71/72, and n80/81.

Advocates are also calling on the state to help fund the bus system out on Long Island.

    http://www.newsday.com/long-island/transportation/advocates-long-island-bus-commuters-deserve-fair-share-of-funding-1.13037783

None of those cuts surprise me (but at this point, NICE could eliminate all non-Queens routes besides the n15 and the n40/41 and still not surprise me).

As for the routes which are being reduced in terms of service but not eliminated, I think we could see the n80/81 being reduced to every 120 minutes each (meaning every 60 minutes combined) mid-day, and probably the elimination of Saturday service on both routes. The n70/71/72 will probably end up with no more service beyond Route 110, or perhaps into Suffolk County at all, unless Suffolk is willing to pony up some funds for NICE to save those routes. The FLEXI will probably lose some deviations (i.e, those that don't attract many riders), and the n27 will probably be cut back to Roslyn.

Part of me does wonder if they're going to put the minibuses on routes like the n80/81, push them into AbleRide service, or sell them on the market.

  9. At worse, the n16 will be packed between HTC and the Student Union building just like it was in LIB days if the cuts happen. NICE has done all that they could with the n16x, n43 to Hempstead, and the n6x to NCC but the County just doesn't want to fork over the money necessary to keep the n35 to Westbury or any of the routes up for elimination from being cut.

The n16, however, lacks the HTC-Roosevelt Field short turns that operated before April 2012 (when the n43 was extended to Hempstead).

  10. Pretty much. I believe the n35 north of Hemsptead is being eliminated because there's plenty of alternatives to Roosevelt Field and NCC in the form of the n15, n16, and n27. If people at HTC aren't taking the n35, then those three routes are usually their back up. I can't say the same for the North Shore, mostly because there's barely any buses that run up there. The n26 and the n57 are pretty much necessary for area coverage, the poor n20 and n25 can only do so much.

However, with the n35 and n6x midday trips gone, this leaves the n16 as the only NCC-Hempstead route left at many points of the day... and who knows if they're going to gut the n6x to NCC completely, since they'll likely have to go deeper than originally considered?

That could be quite the disaster.

  11. How did we get on talking about Long Island parkways now? But since I DO live near the Southern State Parkway, I know the biggest bottlenecks in Nassau County are CIP/Belt (no suprise), 18 (EB ONLY), 19N (lots of cars get off there for Hempstead), 22 (EXTREMELY inefficent ramps onto and off of the Meadowbrook), 27 (Same reasons as 22), 28 (The ramps from the parkways become EXIT ONLY lanes for this interchange, leading to A LOT of weaving). 28A (NY 135) actually tends to not be as backed up, but it has really inadequate ramps.
