Casa Grande, Ariz. -- The federal government is putting up warning sigs for the desert recreation area south of Interstate 8 between Casa Grande and Gila Bend.

The signs say "Danger-Public Warning. Travel Not Recommended",

The signs read that the area is an active drug and human smuggling area and visitors should avoid approaching abandoned cars, backpacks, and any camping sights. The signs include the 911 number for any suspicious activity.

The signs were suggested by [Arizona] Rangers who work the area after a rash of violence and shootings related to drug and human smugglers, according to the Bureau Of Land Management.

Federal Law Enforcement Rangers began reporting increased danger in the area a year ago. Since January there have been at least 12 incidents involving gun violence within the land managed by BLM.

The area is the same corridor where a Pinal County Sheriff's deputy was shot and wounded by suspected drug runners in April. It is also the same area where two suspected drug smugglers were found dead two weeks ago after calling 911 to say they had been shot.

The signs are made of posterboard stapled to plywood. The issue is clearly serious enough for the BLM to use the temporary signs just to make sure the warning gets out,
