In The Bronx, Streetcars Had Letters - Included An O P U and X Lines

In The Bronx, the Third Avenue Railway used letters to help identify streetcar lines. One or two letters were used for more than one line and there was an O, P, and U line (but no I or Y line).

A Westchester Avenue Line The Hub to Westchester Square

 

B Bailey Avenue Line Kingsbridge to Fordham

(B (Bailey Avenue) Line used Bailey Avenue and Fordham Road)

 

B Boston Road Line Mott Haven to Morris Park

 

C Bronx And Van Cortlandt Parks Crosstown Line Riverdale (City Line) to West Farms Square

(C Line used Broadway, Kingbridge Road, Fordham Road, Southern Boulevard, 180th Street and Boston Road)

 

D Dyre Avenue Line Within Eastchester

 

L Saint Ann's Avenue Line Mott Haven to Morrisania

(L Line used Saint Ann's Avenue)

 

M Morris Avenue Line Mott Haven to Morrisania

 

O Ogden Avenue Line Washington Heights to Washington Heights

(O Line used West 155th Street, Ogden Avenue, and West 181st Street)

 

P Pelham Bay Park Line Westchester Square and Pelham Bay Park

(Together, the A Line and P Line served Westchester Avenue from The Hub to Pelham Bay Park. Westchester Square was the terminal/transfer point)

 

S Harlem Shuttle East Harlem and Mott Haven

(This was the only case where Third Avenue used S for Shuttle)

 

S Sedgewick Avenue Line Morrisania and East Tremont

(S (Sedgewick) Line used 161st Street, Sedgewick Avenue, Burnside Avenue and Tremont Avenue)

 

S Southern Boulevard Line Mott Haven and Belmont

W Webster Avenue And White Plains Road Line The Hub to Wakefield (City Line)

 

W Willis Avenue Line West 130th Street Ferry and Woodlawn (City Line)

(W (Willis Avenue) Line used 125th Street, Willis avenue, Melrose Avenue, and Webster Avenue)
