SoSpectacular Posted October 21, 2010 Share #76 Posted October 21, 2010 Why extend an already horrible education? Students aren't learning anything, giving them two more months of nothing is just wasting time and money. We can compete with China and India by: 1. Giving kids incentives to learn. In China and India, education is a privilege, not a given. Children appreciate it, rather than take it for granted like they do here. 2. Teach children what they want to learn. Give them art, music, science... classes that enrich and enlighten. Give them a well-rounded education in the elementary years, then as they get older, let them specialize. 3. Get rid of standardized testing. Students now don't learn for the sake of learning, they learn because they have to. Exactly! Hobbies/goals should always be developed in the younger stages of life, and then kids can expand on those hobbies by studying them in school, whether it be music, art, the sciences, mathematics, kind of how colleges function- you get to pick and choose your curriculums. You can't expect to shove things down people's throats and expect them to know it. It's the reason everyone winds up trying to cram it all in or let it slide till the end of the year and expect to pass by handing in missed work/acing the final exam
