Shortline Bus Posted October 1, 2010 Share #1 Posted October 1, 2010 New York hard hit as massive storm makes ugly October arrival, drenches East from Carolinas to Maine By Aliyah Shahid NY Daily News Staff Writer Friday, October 1st 2010 At this rate, the East Coast will be 20,000 leagues under the sea by the end of the day. A torrential storm barreling its way up the Eastern seaboard left neighborhoods flooded and power knocked out to many towns across the coast Friday morning. Remnants from Tropical Storm Nicole drenched cities with more rain in hours than they normally get in a month. Flood warnings and advisories were issued from North Carolina through Maine, as winds reached up to 60 mph. The storm ripped through North Carolina, where Jacksonville was drenched in 12 inches of rain in six hours. Four people, including two children, were killed when their car skidded off a highway 145 miles east of Raleigh. A fifth victim is believed to have drowned after his pickup truck veered off the road into a raging river. In Maryland, two transit buses crashed due to the rain, which left 26 people injured. New York was also hard hit. By 8 a.m., the city had received nearly three inches of rain. Airport delays of up to three hours or more are likely to ground passengers in New York City airports and in Boston. The rain is expected to move out of the Northeast by the end of Friday, but not before leaving an additional 4-6 inches. The good news? New Yorkers will be able to take off their snorkels and fins by Saturday.
