Giving up freebie is E-Z for MTA big

An MTA board vice chairman voluntarily gave up his free E-ZPass privileges rather than wait for a board vote to revoke them.

 

David Mack started using his credit card to pay for the tags issued by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and the Port Authority, a source close to the real estate magnate said.

 

"There's a lot of resentment that the implication is they were getting something for nothing, that they were not doing work, or that they knew that they were doing something illegal," the source said.

 

He will pay for all trips, even those related to his official duties, the spokesman said. Mack, of Long Island, also is a commissioner with the Port Authority.

 

Some of the unsalaried board members are angry at state Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's declaration that the decades-old practice is illegal. Board members by law are to serve without salary or "other compensation," Cuomo said.
