Straphangers encouraged to protect belongings

NYPD Transit Bureau Sgt. William Buckley turned on his megaphone so the crowd one recent morning at the 72nd Street and Broadway subway station could hear him over the trains and the accordion player on the downtown platform.

 

"Gentleman, please watch your wallets," Buckley boomed. "Keep your wallet in your front pocket. Don't put your wallet in your back pocket. Ladies keep your purses and your handbags in front of you at all times."

 

Grand larcenies in the subways so far this year are down 16 percent compared to the same period last year, according to police. But it never hurts to remain cautious, as a one-man purse-snatching spree last month highlights.

After years of going to nyc and reading stories & watching movies i can say that wallets are a really stupid idea. The one time i had one someone i knew stole it. Useless.
