Nassau taking us for $100M ride - MTA

Adding to the MTA's budget woes, Nassau County has stiffed the authority out of more than $100 million for bus and railroad service, transit officials say.

 

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority - which says a fiscal crisis may force it to raise fares again next year - contends Nassau hasn't lived up to financial agreements.

 

State Controller Thomas DiNapoli, meanwhile, released a report Thursday showing the MTA spent $1.1 billion on personal-injury and property claims filed by workers, riders and motorists over a 10-year period. That includes recent payouts of $285,000 to repair commuters' clothing ripped by poorly designed commuter-train seats.

 

The MTA released a statement saying worker and rider injury rates have declined dramatically over the past 12 years, adding safety is a top priority.
