CPBO Posted November 6, 2011 Share #1 Posted November 6, 2011 The MTA doles out 20,000 E-ZPasses to city and state agencies for unlimited use on the job, it says. Under a deal reached last year to curb the freebies, the city now pays MTA Bridges and Tunnels a yearly lump sum -- currently $9.1 million -- for 14,074 E-ZPass tags for various city agencies. That’s based on about 1.6 million trips, said spokeswoman Judie Glave. The NYPD and FDNY use about 11,400 of the tags in marked and unmarked vehicles. Mayor Bloomberg’s office gets 14 passes, but a spokesmen would not say who holds them. Each city agency must have procedures to safeguard the tags and ensure they are used “for official business only.” The MTA requires no written reports, Glave said. Bridges and Tunnels hands out another 5,936 free E-ZPasses, mostly to other law-enforcement and emergency-response agencies, including the State Police, state Attorney General’s Office and District Attorney’s Offices in the five boroughs. The city’s borough presidents get a total 12 free passes. City Comptroller John Liu gets one. The MTA charges tolls from $4 to $13 for cars to access various bridges and tunnels across the city. susan.edelman@nypost.com Read more: http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/mta_gives_out_toll_freebies_0Xl3FEy9UjCVQ6sS44rBnL#ixzz1cvm1sd1L
