WWDC 2012: Apple Announces OS X Mountain Lion Release in July for $19.99.

This is the first of few threads I am posting, this is a Mac OSX Specific Thread:

MacLife.com -- "Are you ready for the big cat to come down off the mountain and roar onto your Mac? Apple has finalized a July release for OS X Mountain Lion, with developers receiving a gold master of the 10.8 release today.

Following the introduction of new MacBook products, Apple senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller relinquished the keynote floor to Craig Federighi to discuss OS X Mountain Lion, which will be available next month from the Mac App Store for only $19.99 -- $10 less than last year’s OS X Lion.

Federighi notes that the current OS X Lion was the best-selling release of Mac OS X ever, with 40 percent of users already having updated in only nine months. The Mac App Store-exclusive release shipped a whopping 26 million copies and user adoption of OS X Lion was far greater than for Microsoft Windows 7.

The subject then turns to eight new OS X Mountain Lion features starting with iCloud, which now touts 125 million users. Three new iCloud-powered apps borrowed from iOS will be included: Messages, Reminders and Notes.

Documents in the Cloud will also now power Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Preview and TextEdit, with an SDK available for developers to add their own support on the Mac. Notification Center is another feature borrowed from iOS 5, which brings Growl-style banners and alerts to the desktop.

Siri-powered Dictation is also making the leap from iOS 5 into OS X Mountain Lion, “built into the system and works everywhere, including Microsoft Word,” the executive notes.

The new Safari browser now adds a unified smart search field similar to Google’s Chrome, and introduces iCloud Tabs for syncing browser tab content between all of your computers and devices.

Following a demonstration of the new Safari, Federighi introduces yet another new feature, Power Nap, which promises to keep your Mac up to date while it sleeps -- including backups while charging. The new feature is compatible only with second-generation MacBook Air models and the new MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

AirPlay finally arrives on the Mac with OS X Mountain Lion, capable of pushing pixel-for-pixel 1080p video from the computer to an Apple TV-powered television without wires. GameCenter also makes the leap from iOS, supporting multiplayer Mac-to-Mac and even across iOS devices as well.

Among more than 200 other features, OS X Mountain Lion also adds several “wonderful features” for Chinese users, including new input methods, new dictionaries, eight new fonts, and support for Baidu, Youku and Tudou.

Of course, what we all want to know is: When can we finally purchase OS X Mountain Lion? That’s easy: It will be available for a mere $19.99 from the Mac App Store sometime in July. New Macs purchased as of today will get the OS X Mountain Lion upgrade free of charge, and developers will receive a “near-final” build of the software following the keynote."
