CenSin Posted October 23, 2013 Share #1 Posted October 23, 2013 For those who are buying memory cards for their cameras, wait another month and a cheap new card will come out. For ~$139 (lowest price I found), you get 256GB on 1 card. For comparison purposes, SAMSUNG sells a 64GB card (very popular) for roughly $51 (lowest price I've found over a 4-month period of tracking). At the moment, Lexar is the only company that produces a 256GB card, and it's priced at $489 (cheapest). No vendor has the card on stock currently, but many already have product pages for the item, including Amazon.com.

CenSin Posted October 23, 2013 Author Share #3 Posted October 23, 2013 Aren't the data transfer rates on cards that large godawful? Generally, the larger cards are faster. If solid-state drive (SSD) stats are are any indication, larger capacities allow for better parallelization which multiplies speed by the number of NAND chips inside the drive. SecureDigital (SD) cards are small, but some contain multiple NAND chips. On the other hand, the fastest performers are usually capped at half (or even a quarter) of the capacities of the slower cards. Extreme performance cards are generally 32GB or 64GB. My guess is that since higher capacity NAND chips aren't available, the manufacturers try to make do with what that have by using many more smaller chips, thus limiting the capacities of performance cards. Lexar's 256GB card seems to be very performant, however.
CenSin Posted March 17, 2014 Author Share #4 Posted March 17, 2014 Apparently, nobody else has released a 256GB card for sale yet. The PNY SKU is just hypothetical, listed in various e-retailer sites, but no actually available. Lexar sells the one any only 256GB SDXC card to date, and nobody has anything equal or bigger. CenSin Posted May 17, 2014 Author Share #5 Posted May 17, 2014 It's now sold on TigerDirect for $109.99! The mail-in rebate of $10.00 brings it down to $99.99. That works out to about 39¢ per gigabyte! Going by the reviews, it's been out for about a month. It's about time Lexar's 2-year-old product got some competition. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=8967120 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820178706 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1016078-REG/pny_technologies_p_sdx256u1h_ge_256gb_elite_sdxc_uhs_1_card.html
