I wanted to make a thread about my trip to the City, from 2/15 - 2/19. I put this in the NYC Subway category so it can be more noticeable. I will take pictures and videos of the Subways and buses. I'm also gonna go to the NYTM because I said so. Now You can ask me questions and such, And I'll update the thread when I need to.

Y'all ain't catchin me at a hotel, no, no, no. If you see, me, you see me. Otherwise, you don't. I'm gonna be in Manhattan and Bklyn, and possibly even The Bronx, but no Queens and SI (both possible).

My goal for this trip is to catch most if not all NYC rolling stock, from 46 to 188 (ye naw I ain't lucky, so I might or might not catch a 211). So see ya!

The R211 is getting easy to catch.  When it comes down to it, there aren't all that many in-service car types anymore.  R46, R68, R143, R160, R179, R211 on the B division and R62, R142, and R188 on the A division.  The time with the most variation was late 60s/early 70s when the original equipment was being replaced and every order was different from the last.  Now they order more cars that are all the same.  There are close to 1700 R160s and they all are the same.  The R143 and R179 are so similar to them that most people don't know the difference.

You have a point there, but now, I'm definitely gonna be in da Bronx. Tonight at midnight, I'm takin an Amtrak from 30th Street in Center City to 34th Street-Penn Station in Midtown and taking train (don't know yet) to go where I wanna stay. I'ma be in the city @ 2AM. But yeah, they might be easier since there are like 10 sets in service excluding the 4080 series. I'd be happy to catch any subway car. MOF, i was happy to catch the R46 in bold! Third 4-car set (number wise because of refurbishment) I caught some R46s and an R68A entering and leaving Stillwell in June. All of these ran on the (Q) at the time. Here are the cars i caught:

R46: 5490-5493, 5526-5529, 5594-5597, 5814-5817, 16 cars, 2 trains

I think 5490 and 5814 were paired, while 5594 and 5526 were paired IIRC.

R68A: 5061-5064, 5133-5136, 8 cars, 1 train

Access-A-Ride bus: 5311, 1 bus

I wanted to add the Access-A-Ride bus because I didn't catch any buses

Once the 44s/46s are retired, and if we see 211s to Jamaica, 207 and Pitkin and 160s to Concourse/CI, we'll still have some fleet variety, but not as much as we used too - even as late as 2019 the (J) / (Z) was running 5 car types and the (A)(C)(N)(Q)(W) 3. We'll still see some variety - I'm guessing the (J)(Z) will still be a 143/160/179 mix, the (A)(C) a 179/211 mix, and the (L) still a 143/160 mix (maybe some 211s go there or to the (M)), but even the (N)(Q)(W) , which I remember as mix, could be mostly 68s with an occasional 160. Personally as long as there are two types on a single line or two on a trunk (mix of 62s and 142s on Broadway-7th and Lex), I feel like it'll still be interesting to see different car types.

They're getting rid of the word 'diversity'

Back in 1969 we had Standards, R1/9s, R10, R11, R16, R27/30, R32, R38, R40S, R40M, R42 and the Q cars all in service at the same time.  That was diversity.

On the A division we had R12/14, R15, R17, R21/22, R26/28/29/33/36, and the R33/36 WF cars.  And they were all in mixed sets.

Caught some R142s. Rode 6829 from Simpson st to Hoyt, and 7019 from Hoyt to prospect avenue. Took a pic of the first 142. The other was in video and idk why I can't upload the picture
