Hi everyone, just found out this forum. I will be going to the Jan. 31st S&D overview. Any guess for the official S&D exam format? Like multiple choice, fill in blank, Ture or false, memorial writing or scenario handling questions?

the overview is the day they inform you on what you need to do/study and they will give you the materials you need. all your questions will also be answered on this day

Happy New Year everyone. I'm new to the forum and I only see 1 forum regarding Block Operator Trainee. I was thinking if the Signal and Definition exam is same as the Assistant Conductor Trainee. I'm going for the Overview on 01/31/2018.

    relied to your post

I have seen a bunch of red flags around, so i assume you guys are out now mentoring.  Probably a shock to the system, realizing how things work outside of the classroom and in the real world.  Listen to your mentors!! Act like a sponge, absorb everything!! (try, at least lol)  just wait till your first day and are thrown out to the wolves on your own.  Scary, but its the only way you will learn.  Focus on getting off probation, studying is the easy part.  Winter is going to suck for you guys.  Try and stay positive.

    you sure about that?

  4. Congrats Fed & Dre! Great news. Keep your fingers crossed me IronHorse & myself. Lol

Can you confirm something for me? As I'm already studying. I was just told that "flagman", "effective securing device" and "effective locking device" were all deleted from definitions and there's no need to know them. Of course I got them down already lol. But can u confirm if they're in there?

    Thanks!

if you are starting AC class then you need not worry about the hand out they gave you. you will get your book of rules and whatever definitions are in that book are the ones you need to know.

  5. Hey guys

First off, just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has posted here. Some great insight and info. Really appreciate it as well as all the advice. I was invited to the class on the 18th, I know a lot of studying is to follow. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone can give any info on what follows after...specifically, the drawing of the station that is involved. That part has me really worried. Any insights? also, if you get the job, trying to get to certain stations-what do you feel is the best way to get there? Meaning, if you have to get to green port in the morning, say coming off a night shift, would the train be the best way? I don't have a car, and I am wondering how much of a problem this will be. Thanks again for any info you can give.

congrats! you are correct, a lot of studying or maybe the most studying you'll do. don't worry about PC. You'll have time to study to qualify after you get through probation. Right now just do your best to pass AC class. Once you're out, there's a good chance you will be sent anywhere from Penn to montauk of greenport. that's is why they require you to have a license and a reliable car. as to whether to drive or DH on a train, you'll have to look at the schedule. Good luck!

  6. 3 open houses with at least 100-150 ppl per house and at the open house Linda Oliver said there are only 72 positions available.. Sigh. I can imagine how many ppl applied to the posting. Just to be invited to the open house is a task in itself much less to secure one of those 72 positions. It's like playing the lottery here. She also said you won't get rich working for the railroad but you will live a comfortable life. I honestly wish everyone the best.

72 positions because they are trying to do 5 classes of 22 or 24 this year. yeah it's like winning the lottery if you get in ;-) good luck to all

  7. The book of rules is the book of rules. To qualify as a conductor you start off as an assistant conductor and I think you have 2 years to study to qualify. Not sure if they have a verbal exam afterwards. But the questions should be similar I presume.

the book and PC both have vebals after passing the written test. you can pass the written and fail the verbal. it's a process i don't want to go through again but definitely worth it.  think the engine service process is a lot better than the conductors. for conductors you study on your own while working trains. good luck to everyone. i

  8. How did you guys study and retain this information, The definitions are killing me they seem so long and hard. Can someone give me some tips and let me know how the definition part of the exam was. The signals are easy to learn because they seem very repetitive...

Please email to assist me with tips and ideas OperatorRic@gmail.com

put them all on index cards and study everyday. it also helps to write them out. if they gave you a practice CD, do that as well. you have to put in the time and just keep at it. believe me studying for the S&D is nothing compared to qualifying or when you get into the program. having a positive attitude helps too. it's just a matter how bad you want the job. good luck.

  9. The Metro North conductor (what this tread is about) test has NOTHING to do with New York, NYC or any other geographical area. It's strictly a dummy test. Reading comprehension, basic math, mechanical comprehension and a personality test.

NYC Transit is a different ball game.

hey truckie, do you get hired as an assistant conductor at metro north then qualify as a conductor like LIRR? I wonder how similar the process is. thanks.
