  1. hello i am new to this forum, i recently got the email for the first part of the job process.  Its the cognitive test and the vocab test can anybody give some insight on that?  How did this process go, after the first part do they contact you right away or does it take a while please let me know.

open house, 3 tests, cognitive, vocabulary and simple math. if you don't pass the cognitive you go home. if you do, they let you take the vocabulary and then the math, then an interview with HR (all on the same day). cognitive is a speed and accuracy test. no need to study. good luck!

  2. Thanks, Truckie.

And I apologize for the incorrect heading on this topic - I made that early January mistake and wrote the year before.

For anyone who wants to apply for this position, go to mta.info, employment, Metro North, and file electronically (with your resume) by close of business tomorrow (Friday, January 15th).

One other question that comes to mind - do conductors typically work 40 hours per week, or are extra shifts or substantial OT common?

if it's similar to LIRR you are guaranteed 40 hours a week. actual work hours depends on the job.

  3. All right folks! I just received my final email stating that I have been selected for Phase 1. Been studying more now that they emailed us the Book of Rules to get a head start. This is no joke. So much information. Im sure this is probably nothing from whats going to be thrown at us in phase 1. My question is what can we expect in phase 1? is it just 6 weeks of classroom material?? are we going to at least see a train in a yard during this phase or in phase 2?

phase 1 is book of rules. i believe you go to class on wednesdays and saturdays. good luck

  4. No, it's top pay starting in the 4th year.

New Wage Progression for Employees Hired After February 25, 2015:

(Rates as of February 25, 2015)

    1st 365 days 60% $24.987

    2nd 365 days 80% $33.317

    3rd 365 days 90% $37.481

    After 1,095 days 100% $41.646

that sucks. i feel that when i qualify and get that green card i should be getting top pay but that's just me ;-)

  5. congrats on passing vocab & cognitive. I'm still looking for a practice example of the cognitive so if anyone can help just inbox message me. And once again congrats to all who passed.

no way to finish the cognitive in the time they give you. you just answer the questions as fast and accurately as you can. once you pass cognitive, vocabulary and math is easy.

  6. Yeah I'm there. No room on the Yardmasters roster right now so they are allowing me to go for Engine Service. Quick question do you know why they are hiring so many Engineers.

to be honest im not sure. the roster is really slow for the low seniority guys. new AC class was in orientation yesterday and hiring more.

  7. Finally drove the RTS today which was not bad at all but I'd prefer the Hybrid any day over that. I think it's because I spent 7 days training on the hybrid and got so used to it. That's just my opinion. One more day of RTS and a lil more paper work and I graduate on Wednesday. Thank u GOD!

damn! 3 years ago we train on the rts and only got our hand on the hybrid after qualifying.

  8. From what I understand, after you pass training on day 7 or 9, you have 2 chances for the road test.  If you should go to day 10 then you only have one chance.

After "qualifying" on day 7, 9 or 10, you go back to Zerega for what they call RTS training (which is just the older bus) for a few days.

2 years ago we used the RTS throughout the training and only trained on the hybrid after we qualified. i fined driving the hybrids a lot easier because of the mirrors but the rear hangs out more than the RTS.

congrats and good luck on the road test.

  9. concentrate on tomorrow. Im sure you went over the mistakes you made today. Remember those and just come tomorrow with a clear mind. If you make no mistakes tomorrow and show confidence on day seven without a mistake, you have a great chance of qualifying. They need to make the evaluation harder on days 6 through 10. They dont want operators making mistakes out there and being sued. Plus after you qualify you train on other bus types without the trolley brakes. Good luck and apply the basics.

  10. tomorrow is day 5 and I have to say I am a wreck about driving in manhattan tomorrow...just trying to get a grip.

anybody know where in manhattan they take us to drive? Also, Day 7, who does the qualifying, your instructor or someone else?

don't worry about manhattan. it shouldn't matter as long as you take your time, apply what you've learned, forward planning and again listen to your instructor. good luck and always watch your pivot wheel.

  11. I have a question:  How do they handle the DMV aspect of getting your license?  I have my CDL permit - do they do all the training with you and when you qualify for training they give you a license?  is part of qualifying passing a road test ?  Do they have dmv inspectors at the training site to pass you??

I know day one is paper work etc....Day 2 - 6 training.  Day 7& 8 opportunity to advance to line training?  Does that mean passing your road test?  (also day 9 & 10)

they will aske you to pay DMV for the roadtest, i believe $40. if you qualify, they will make the date appointment with DMV and you will use the same bus you've been training on. It's up to you to pass the roadtest. if you qualified in 7 days you get 2 chances. if not and you fail the roadtest, you're back on the streets. good luck.

  12. My condolences to whoever was in the middle of training yesterday and clipped their mirror on a truck on 3rd Ave around 14th. Tough break, supervisor did not look impressed.

Ouch!!!!! That's going to leave a mark.

definitely not good but i found most instructors are forgiving. the student will definitely do day 10. On our first day of line training one girl rear ended another bus. she was sent for drug test ASAP. remember, SLOW DOWN. no one's rushing you.

  13. i`m ok it`s hard i did the el pellers my turns i need to work on

make sure you have that right side mirror perfectly setup and get used to seeing the rear tire and the curve when making your turns. if you're using the rts bus, which most likely is, don't hesitate to lean forward to get a good look at that right rear tire. plan ahead and spacing is very important. you'll have a better idea on day 6 if you'll make it in 7 days or will have to go extra days. good luck.
