Don't worry you'll spend LOTS of time reciting the signals and getting popped-quizzed on them. There's the movable signals (about 5 of those), the audible signals (about 10), fixed signals (a whole bunch), interlocking signals (even more), timers (the really tricky part - STUDY THESE CLOSELY!!!), and signs (a whole bunch, but these are the easiest once you actually learn them). When you take the test, they want DEFINITIONS. If they show you a sign that says

they don't want you to write "this signal means stop the train at the sign". They want you to write "a fixed signal found at the entrance to maintenance facilities and crosswalks in yards. Train Operators must stop the train and the proceed in accordance with special instructions"

I know it's been said already, but it can't be stressed enough. KNOW YOUR SIGNALS. And remember that there are more types of signals than just the lights. There are fixed signs, movable flagging signals, as well as AUDIBLE signals. You know what LONG SHORT LONG SHORT on the horn means? Do you know what up and down with a red lantern means?

It takes about a month for that stuff to kick in on your checks.

Third rail jumper cables are used to give 600v to a train whose shoe is gapped so it isn't getting power. One end gets held on the shoe and the other end against the third rail. There's no feeling like holding those cables in your hands (but they come with gloves that are stamped GOOD FOR 700V) while that kind of electricity is flowing through them!....especially if it starts arcing! Once you have it flowing, the train can charge and you SLOWLY move along with it until the shoe reaches the third rail

Did any of your uniforms have VK on the label instead of Lion?

Did your winter coat come with a hood? Some of us got hoods, others didn't, but there's a bulletin which actually states that we aren't allowed to use the hood while operating, due to a potential dragging issue!

It's not unusual for the uniforms to arrive in the wrong size. If they do, SEND THEM BACK. I had to try 3 times before I got a hat that fit. If there's anything that you really need, you can go to the 6th floor at 130 Livingston and ask to see a uniform/equipment employee. They have a closet there with returned uniforms which you can pick from.

I think we can all agree that 4 car trains at double the headway is preferable to 8 car trains that run half as often.....

If T/O schoolcar is anything like C/R schoolcar, you won't ever see the other division classes ever again after the first couple days (but if there's more than one class in your division, you'll get together for exams and event days like when you tour the RCC).

One tip to remember for Right To Know is that you can click on the buttons before the video/audio finishes playing. After you've sat through this a couple times, you'll already know all the answers and just want to get it over with as fast as possible.

Diet soda is actually WORSE for you than the regular stuff. Have you ever read the ingredient list? At least High Fructose Corn Syrup is something found in nature. The chemical crap they put in the diet soda in order to keep the calorie/sugar count down is instead giving you cancer and heart disease, and the fact that there is FAKE sugar in there causes a psychological effect on your brain which has you craving the real stuff in other forms. I'm guessing that you carry snacks in your suitcase too, and they aren't of the diet variety?

TSS Ricky is a cool guy. I don't know Roberto. And the last time I saw Donald, he looked like he was on his way to Europe with that big suitcase he rolls around (laminated stripmap cheatsheets can't take up THAT much room!). I managed to get all of my required PPE into a swissgear backpack which I bought at Staples, with room to spare for my WAA-survival kit. Once you finish schoolcar and get on the road, the only books you'll be required to carry are the rulebook, blue book and either the butcher book or another pocket notebook which you can use to write notes for customers. Did they give you a route guide?

Because there is no easy way for wheelchair customers to transfer between the and at that station. 149-GC actually HAD elevators, but they were removed a long time ago for reasons I do not know. That sealed headhouse on the street is actually the shaft.
