Great update on the (Q) with the R46. Interesting that even if it's going local during the late night hours, it's stuck to using one code reading "via BRIGHTON, via BROADWAY" heading to 96 St/2 Av.

No Broadway LCL or Broadway EXP readings to 96 St

When the MTA reprogrammed it, they probably made this choice so they only needed to use one code for both local and express, since saying via does not specifically state if the train is local or express. If it did and there was only one code, an incorrect display would be used since the code for the other option is missing.

sorry, thanks for the help though. I can't tell if all of these segments are necessary, I wish I could have a clear reference. Its not much but I found a website where I can share the model so far: https://thangs.com/m/12000. I might drop this project since I do not have the means money or energy to finish this, maybe someone else here might find it useful.

Looks nice! I'm sure this can be recreated virtually. After all, I plan on doing so!

  3. I've noticed some odd rollsigns on the R46 that I'm unfamiliar with. The common Neue Haas Grotesk rollsign normally looks like this (made by Some Train Enthusiast):unknown.png

However, I have also noticed other possibly older rollsigns. This is how the older R42 Standard rollsign looks like (made by Some Train Enthusiast):unknown.png

Despite this existing, I have not actually seen this on the R46. I have seen other similar route bullets, but the entire rollsign seems to be different. I have collected these sightings together as an attempt to figure out the rollsigns, and I've concluded that some older rollsigns with weird font choices exist:

    unknown.png

Rollsign #1 Possibility: Entire rollsign is in Standard (a bit thin), seen on #5824 and #6142 (I assume #6142 originally had a Neue Haas Grotesk rollsign but for some reason was given a Standard rollsign, this happened with R42s as well)

Rollsign #2 Possibility: This is a mix of the older and newer R42 rollsign, with some in Neue Haas Grotesk (F, G, N, <W>, Q, NIS) and some in Standard (R, <R>). It also includes JFK, diamond W instead of circle, and diamond brown R. The Q and R seem a bit distorted at some angles for some reason. This is seen on the rollsigns in the list from #5498 to #5592 and #5660 to #5770.

Rollsign #3 Possibility: Standard (F), Neue Haas Grotesk (G), Neue Haas Grotesk (R). Possibly the older R42 rollsign, but it has a Neue Haas Grotesk (G)

Rollsign #4 Possibility: One with a weird Standard (R) as seen in #5622, though the picture may be from a different car.

I have car #5774 marked down for having an old rollsign, but I am unable to find any pictures.

If anyone has any information about these R46 rollsigns, please let me know.

I think I am just trying to model the route tile, I think it looks the most aesthetically pleasing. could you tell me where I could find the font if you know? here is my progress so far (https://imgur.com/a/w1ngIpM) though I might abandon this project (I don't have the means to do much beyond some light 3d modelling since I am using linux and have no time, money or 3d printer) it still seems interesting.

You can find the fonts at https://www.nyctransitforums.com/topic/43376-r142r142a-background-font-templates/ though there are some inaccuracies

Update: Looks like you found it just before I posted it!

  5. Someone has already made fonts for the R142 and R142A route and destination tiles, posted somewhere here on nyctransitforums. Your route tile recreation is completely accurate to my knowledge. Note that the destination tile is different than the route tile (I didn't realize this then). I am also recreating this along with many other signs, so let me know if there's anything you're interested in.

FYI, fonts can(and have) been changed. Ever notice how the 8000's Axions got switched from their display font to the Luminator display font? Mind you, this happened before Luminator officially purchased Axion.

The MTA wouldn't put Hanover fonts on an Axion sign. If 4810 had Axion signs, then they would probably use the same font as the Axion signs on the 2011 LFS (remember that 4810 is a 2011 XD40).

I believe the 2011 LFS Axion sign fonts were replaced in the same year as Luminator purchase Axion, on 2014.

If 4810 did actually get Axion signs, was it delivered with them or was it delivered with Hanover which was swapped out with Axion? And does 4810 still have the Axion signs?

First of all, there was no point in bringing back this thread from the grave. If you're that bored, go do something else.

Second, at the time of the photo, the bus DID have Axion signs as a test, it was programmed differently....

I apologize for that, but 4810 in the picture has a Hanover front sign and it uses Hanover Displays fonts. As far as I know, 4810 hasn't gotten an Axion sign, but I'll correct myself if I'm able to confirm through a photo, video or date.

Here's a record for you, if the angle doesn't bother you:

    https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/nycta-subway-front-route-rollsign-135756131

These were made by American Identification Products, who were generally responsible for some of the more interesting and colorful rollsigns of the 70s and 80s. Spec mentions the R21s but not the R17s, so may be later in the 1980s.

This will allow me to recreate the rollsign, so thanks!

Great work on these as well as the R62A replacements.

There are so many different versions of the redbird front rollsigns. Helvetica bullets are the most common, like you replicated, but there were also Akzidenz-Grotesk bullets, Helvetica/Arial bullets, and eventually the 1-9 addition Helvetica rolls from 1990 or so.

Thank you! Yep, I'm aware of the 1-9 roll and I have the 1-4 exposures for the Standard roll, but I don't have the rest so I won't be able to recreate that one.

I bet they'll look great on the latest version of the IRT Redbirds

The latest route rollsign on the IRT Redbirds includes large route text and the addition of the 9 train route bullet. Fortunately, I have sufficient references for this rollsign, so I'll be making it.

  11. Here is probably the most accurate rollsign with correct fonts, sizes, and spacing. This is the vertical IRT end route rollsign found on Redbird-class trains. According to the end rollsign readings, this rollsign contract was for the R17, R21, R22, R26, R28, R29, R33, and R36. All of the route bullets are in Neue Haas Grotesk medium, with the express route bullet text being the same size as the circle route bullet text, and the shuttle ("S") route bullet text being just a bit smaller than the rest. The miscellaneous text readings, "Special" and "Not in Service" are in Standard Condensed Bold.

Thanks for letting me know! I'll make the modification.

I'm back with the corrected R62/original R62A rollsign! 8 train has been removed.unknown.png

Additionally, I also made the R62A rollsign versions that I'm aware about! The 1988 version is the most accurate as there are YouTube videos featuring it.

    1988 R62A version:unknown.png

2009 R62A version (features 1 train short turn destination route bullet experiment):unknown.png

Latest R62A version (entire sign in Neue Haas Grotesk, Express text same color as bullet, NIS centered, year unsure):unknown.png

Please give me some feedback, and any corrections that need to be made!

Nice work! However fyi, there is no 8 reading on the original R62/A rolls. That was an addition part of the 62A replacement rolls printed in 1988, which include the 8-13 bullets and text reading "Express" under the <6> and <7>. Great to see you used Akzidenz and Condensed for this though, that's key to the design.

Thanks for letting me know! I'll make the modification.

  14. Noticed that people haven't posted here in a while, so I decided to give it a shot. Here's my recreation of the R62 rollsign (with some help from Some Train Enthusiast). I still need confirmation of some aspects of the rollsign, but this should capture most of it. Correct font for the bullets.unknown.png

I downloaded the pictures in hope of piecing together a sign, but I noticed the backgrounds were black!

How do I superimpose the dark LED's onto these pictures? I assume its not copying each and every pixel assembly in Paint, right? I do have Illustrator.

Sorry for reactivating this old thread.

Use a software called paint.NET which you can get at getpaint.net and you can use the Magic Wand tool to select all the text or the background and change that color to the selected one using Backspace and/or use layers to make it easier.
