  1. Hey Cappi, IronHorse,

Anything yet from LIRR?  the waiting must be killer I know I wracked my brains waiting for the call, and it was just a huge relief when it finally came.  hopefully you guys get the call soon to continue with this process, how many more s&d overviews this year after April 18th?

nothing yet,..but I'm assuming may calls won't come for a few weeks,...its definitely tough waiting

  2. For me, almost 2 months. But I have been moving at my own pace. I sometimes go 3-5 days with out looking at them. Then spend hours doing them. Work is crazy for me. And other obligations so it's been a slow go. Plus. I haven't been called back. So just doing them at my convenience. 5 weeks would be a stressful cram job for me.

  3. Awfully quiet here now. I wasn't pulled for April 18th group S&D so I got my damn fingers crossed for the May one. So far it seems none of you here saying were called went to March 8th open house so hope for the best. Anyone else keep me posted.

Same boat as you Ironhourse! I was at the Feb 23 Openhouse. Haven't seen much on here from 3/8 at all. So hopefully we still have a shot. especially since I have the definitions down. lol - starting the signals this weekend. Keep us posted,...

  4. Some people don't have the amount of free time others have to study. I'm at a job for 23 years where I work a ton. Obviously I can get it done in the 5 weeks but it would be a stressful cram job. Right now. I have all the definitions basically down. And I haven't been called back and have been able to study at my own pace. It's a matter of preference. As far as material. I have official material right out of the admins office. A month ago. And updated last week Bc they took 3 definitions out that don't have to be known. So good luck on your studying. Hope u do well. But I'll also choose to motor along at my own pace & stress less about cramming. Good luck all.

  5. Congrats Fed & Dre! Great news. Keep your fingers crossed me IronHorse & myself. Lol

Can you confirm something for me? As I'm already studying. I was just told that "flagman", "effective securing device" and "effective locking device" were all deleted from definitions and there's no need to know them. Of course I got them down already lol. But can u confirm if they're in there?

    Thanks!

  6. Got it, thanks for the info!

BP, what do you mean by "hang" 3 of 5 days?

after you get done with class and start working, you get to pick jobs off a list in order of preference, if you're lucky, you land some of the jobs you want, if you don't, you go in what they call "hang" which is when dispatch calls you for when they need you & you don't get the jobs on your list. make sense?

My son just passed the Signals and Definitions test on March 22nd. He said about 45 people showed up to take test and only 15 made it. He had the final interview and got fitted for uniforms. All thats left is background and medical screening. Assuming everything else goes well he expects to start training next month. Its a long process..he's initial call from the RR was in January.

I did a lot of studying with him..make those flashcards ASAP and make studying them your only purpose in life until the test (easier said then done I know).

    Congrats!! excellent accomplishment!!

  7. After you make it past the program they ask you do you want to work your relief days if you say yes you work relief days if you say no you have to wait about 6 months for the opportunity again...its not always guaranteed but if they need you you will work and your probation starts as soon as class starts

    Thank you for posting this!!

I was also just told that some jobs that you're on while working the list might have some OT built in them or things happen on a job that also give you OT.

  8. I guess you're no spring chicken Cappi. Haha. I'm 38 and trying to retire from retail management. I come from a railroad family but didn't make a move when I was young. One question though.....i know overtime is advertised as normal. People make big extras from it, but do they ask newbies during your 1st year of work/probation? And does your 11 week of paid training count as probation period or does it start after completion of it. Thanks in advance.

Im 42, no spring chicken, lol - but still got some gas left in the tank. Im with Cablevision 23 years now and with the new ownership in place there is a lot of crazy changes going on so this was a very welcomed call.

As far as OT goes, I know there is plenty available, even out of the gate. Im not sure of specifics but I will inquire and report back. Same with your other questions, i'll see what I can find out on those fronts.

  9. Hey Cappi, Ironhorse,

any call yet? still waiting on this end, looking at April now as next date. Hopefully soon, the suspense is killing me. Its bizarre how much things change in a three year span, last time they called me within a week. weird...

Nothing yet. After no call last week I knew March was out. I was hoping for April all along but it's still nerve racking. I think this was a mass hiring session. So the 3 overview groups are coming from 4 open house sessions. The class will be August/September for anyone passing the S&D test and background after that. So it's just a big waiting game. I will definitely post in here IF I hear anything. You guys please do the same. Appreciate it.

  10. Hey Member/Cappi, I just wanted to say thank you for these insights. Much appreciated, and If I am lucky/smart enough to get that far, I look forward to serving with you. If the place is filled with guys like you, it must make going to work a very decent experience.

BrianJames- hopefully we are all good enough to get in the door. I'm just waiting on a call back for the S&D overview. But I have friends in several departments for 15-20 years each and all started as AC positions. I went through this process 17 years ago. And been applying the last 3 years non stop. Finally got called back for the Feb open house. All the best buddy.

  11. is that a regular practice? Thank you for this btw.

The 1st year,..the hours are crazy - prepare to be all over the map whenever they want you. you don't get a regular gig,..you "work the list" after probation ends, you get a regular shift but you'll be at the bottom of the list for seniority.

and its my pleasure, its a good place to help each other out with info. i wish everyone the best of luck.

  12. Phew. I was nervous that they were already calling the 4/18 group. Thanku for clarification. It's a good sign that they're still sending emails for 3/28.

As far as study info goes. I'll take my chances with the material I have as well. It's directly from LIRR.

    Good luck to you all.

  13. They do tell you what dremoney suggests. They don't want ppl having an advantage of the 5 weeks they provide you. Studying early is kind of frowned upon I think. But ppl do it. I have official info from going through the process years ago. I can tell you. A few have changed a little bit. I hope we hear something for the 4/18 overview soon. I'm dying.
