Right. It would take a lot of time from start to finish to convert Woodhaven Blvd to an express stop. But I think it would be worth doing, given the high traffic that station gets due to the mall and the many bus routes that connect there. It would also take a lot of pressure off the overcrowded narrow platforms at Roosevelt Ave/74th St, where many of the riders who come off those same buses at Woodhaven are transferring from (M) or (R) local trains to (E) or (F) express trains at Roosevelt. Even without the Rockaway Branch, this would be well worth doing. But with the Rockaway Branch, converting Woodhaven to an express stop should be an integral part of the project.

    Agreed.

No doubt about that. It's a long-overdue project that the IND should've bit the bullet on back in the '30s.

The IRT should have done the same with Columbus Circle back in the 50s.

  2. Next scenario:

The Broadway, 7 Avenue, and Lexington Avenue lines has insufficient stormproofing. A hurricane floods…

    • …South Ferry/Whitehall Street, Rector Street, and Cortlandt Street on both the Broadway and 7 Avenue lines.
    • …Bowling Green and the Joralemon Street Tunnel with the initial flood pushing up to Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall temporarily. Saltwater damage has occurred again and the line is out of service from Brooklyn Bridge–City Hall to Borough Hall.
      • Water that made it to Fulton Street also flooded the ( (A)(C)) level with most of that water emptying into the Cranberry Street Tunnel.

Of course, other flooded areas out in the open include:

    • Coney Island Yard ( (D)(N)), 86 Street, Avenue, and Kings Highway ( (N))
    • Broad Channel ( (A)(S))

    Reroute away!

A shuttle signed as (H) runs between 116th and Far Rockaway.

    (A) service operates between Howard Beach/Lefferts and 207th Street. Trains run local in Brooklyn, and also run via Rutgers/6th Av. Some peak trains run express in Brooklyn.

    (C) trains run between 168th and WTC.

    (E) trains operate as normal.

    (B) service slightly reduced.

    (D) trains terminate at Bay Pkwy.

    (1) trains run to Flatbush Av via Eastern Pkwy Exp.

    (2) trains run as normal.

    (3) trains run as normal.

    (4) trains run between Woodlawn and Brooklyn Bridge, running local south of Grand Central.

    (5) trains run between Grand Central and Dyre Av.

    (6) operates as normal.

    (N) late-night service rerouted over Manhattan Bridge. Trains run via the (Q) to CI, with some terminating at Ocean Pkwy due to capacity issues.

    (Q) operates as normal.

    (R) service via Bridge at all times.

    (W) is suspended.

Cranes are used to get cars to the Rockaways. CI yard is already evacuated and only cars awaiting scrapping remain.

  3. (F) trains will run as 8-car trains to Metropolitan or Broadway Jct. (G) trains will run 8-car trains as well with R160s and some R46s. The R68s on the (G) would be used to provide extra service on the (E) and (R).

You can't run 8-car F trains as you should have to go take some from ENY, which would take an hour if they were sitting there. You would also be deceasing capacity, and you could just transfer to the (6) at Broadway-Laffayette and take it to Canal or Brooklyn Bridge for the (J) / (Z) if you needed to get to Queens and Brooklyn.

Right, getting this back on topic:

Rail conditions north (actually west) of 2nd Avenue makes it so all trains to/from Broadway-Lafayette MUST come from/go to the Broadway-Brooklyn line, which is unaffected by this.

At the same time, a switch issue in the Montague tunnel makes it so all trains in the tunnel to Manhattan MUST go via Nassau (though trains from Manhattan on the Broadway line can use the Montague tunnel normally).

    Lines mainly affected: (F)(M)(R)

    Reroute as needed.

      (B) trains are suspended.

      (F) trains rerouted via the (D) to 9th Av, via 4th Avenue Lcl.

      (M) service is rerouted to Chambers Street or Broad Street.

      (D) operates as normal.

      (R) trains are rerouted over the Manhattan Bridge to Dekalb, where they resume normal service. IRT Brooklyn lines provide alternate service.

      (W) trains to Bay Pkwy are suspended.

  4. I literally just said that was illegal. Subway cars CAN NOT share tracks with freight. Subway crashworthiness standards are dictated by the FTA and freight by the FRA, and given the laws above, converting the tracks to FTA standards is out of the question.

You might be able to use modified subway cars (ex. SIR R44s) that are compliant with FRA standards, but the only chance we have of something like that happening soon is with the R211 contract, or with whatever contract replaces the 62/62As.

  5. What if power went out for three days at coney island yard and stations near the yard especially the Coney Island Terminal. It Effect on (B)(D)(F)(G)(N)(Q)(R)(W) and it's cars.

    (D) mainly uses Concourse, and the (F) / (R) have Jamaica.

    (D) terminates at Bay Pkwy.

    (F) terminates at Kings Highway.

    (B) / (Q) terminates at Brighton.

    (N) service terminates at Bay Pkwy.

Use diesel equipment to get cars out of CI.

  6. A signal malfunction causes a wide spread blackout on the 6th, 7th, and 8th Avenue lines between 50th Street (49th Street) and 23rd Street. It's rush hours and you got lots of trains, what do you do?

    (A) service operates in two sections: Between 207th and 59th (local) and between 14th Street and Far Rockaway (local). Service to Lefferts becomes a shuttle, and RPK (A) service is suspended.

    (C) service is suspended.

    (E) service operates between Jamaica Center and 21st Street-Queensbridge.

    (B) service is suspended.

    (D) trains are split up. The southern part is rerouted up Broadway to 96th Street. (W) service is suspended. The northern (D) runs from Norwood to 59th as CPW local.

    (F) trains run via the (G) to Bergen, then resume their normal route.

    (M) service is rerouted to Chambers Street.

    (1) trains operate between 137th Street and 242nd Street.

    (2) trains operate via the (5) in Manhattan.

    (3) service operates between 148th Street and 96th Street.

  7. New scenario:

They’re coming with body bags to pick two people off the tracks after being struck by a train. The bodies were found on the southbound local track at the curve just north of 57 Street–7 Avenue. Police are on the lookout for a possible third person in the tunnels since the two bodies were found with 3 backpacks. Power is out at 57 Street–7 Avenue and 5 Avenue.

    Reroute the rush hour trains.

     (N) service is rerouted up 6th Av via 53rd street to Jamaica, running express. Trains in Astoria become shuttles.

    (Q) service is truncated to Times Square, and runs local in Manhattan.

    (R) service is terminates at Whitehall (late-night service pattern).

    (W) service operates as a shuttle between Times Square and Whitehall Street.

Other routes affected by this change:

    (M) service is rerouted to Chambers to permit the (N) to run to Queens.

    (F) trains now run local in Queens so the (N) can run express. This helps take some pressure off the (E) as two express lines now run via 53rd.

  8. And.... I don't see the Rockaway Beach Branch line anywhere

If you want fast service from the Rockaways, you need to build a new line via South Brooklyn. The RBB would only serve as a shuttle unless a bypass was built that connected to the 63rd street tunnel.

  9. Yeah here's how I'd do it.

Before 2 Av and the Bushwick-Queens line is built:

    (G) returns to 71 Av to use up freed capacity and to placate community opposers that didn't want to the (G) to be cut back in 2001. This allows for more transfers along the QB line.

    (M) diverts down the Rockaway Branch to Rockaway Park, replacing the shuttle.

    (R) stays as-is, if the LGA extension for the (N) is built after Phase 3 of the SAS opens.

After 2 Av and the Bushwick-Queens line is built:

    (G) same as above.

A new (H) train runs via 6 Av, with a spur to the Rockaway Branch at 63 Dr-Rego Park.

The (M) would be replaced by the (B) on Myrtle and (H) on Queens Blvd, which frees up capacity on the 6 Av local.

The (R) would return to the Astoria Line if the (N) gets extended to LGA as this allows for a new yard on ConEd land, allowing the (N) to take its place as the QB local to 71 Av via 63 St. This reduces congestion in the 60 St Tube and not making the (N)(Q) interact with the (R)(W), because they would only interact with themselves.

A new SAS (V) runs from Hanover Sq to 179 St via 63 St and a new bypass, making local stops east of Forest Hills. This allows the  (F) to skip stops the whole length of QB, as well as the reduced need for the (E) to stop at 75 Av/Briarwood-Van Wyck outside of late nights.

While I agree with the (N)(Q)(R)(W) plan, the rest really won't work because of these reasons:

    1. QBL is at capacity.

    2. 75-footers cannot go on Myrtle. This would require sending all of the 68s from the B to the N/Q/W for 160s. This would create longer dwell times along the line because 75-footers have increased capacity with the same amount of doors.

    3. Most people won't take the M because it runs as a QBL local.

If people really wanted a good connection from the Rockaways to Midtown and lower Manhattan, I would send a line from 96th street down to Prospect Av, running express on Broadway. After Prospect, it would run express to Church and then run down a new line under Flatbush Avenue to Rockaway Beach Blvd, where then it will run over that to 119th street. From there it will curve to Beach 116th St station. This however, would require relocating buildings and rebuilding the entrance/exit of Beach 116th St station.

As for the Flatbush section, the line would be 3 tracks with a peak direction express service. Express stops would be located at Nostrand (transfer to the 2 and 5), Kings Highway, , and Utica Avenue. Local stops would be included at Clarendon Rd, Avenue J, and Avenue N. After passing Avenue V, the line would emerge and run alongside Flatbush Av, as well as merge into two tracks. A summer-only stop might be added at Floyd Bennet Field. From there, the line would travel on a new bridge to Jacob Riis Park, where another stop would be located. After that, the line would run along Rockaway Beach Blvd to 116th with stops at 142nd, 133rd, and 124th.

  10. The R160's were scrapped from (A) in the past because of the power supply difference out in the rockaways. LIPA provides the power out there not ConEd.

Don't they have power gaps on the line there which is why they can't use a 4 car R32 for the RPK (S)?

  11. The (H) would Also be a good choice but the problem is that will it run on 8, 6, or 2 Avenues

As for the (M) it could run a week day express service from Myrtle-Wycoff to Marcy Av and Queens Plaza to Roosevelt Avenue (or convert Woodhaven Boulevard into an express station as it was originally intended to do so) but that would require a new bus hub in some sort of way. However, CBTC would need to be completed on Queens Boulevard and the (G) (yes, the (G) ) would have to supplement as a local service in this proposal

My plan for the (H) would not involve it heading into Manhattan at all. Instead, it would just run to Forest Hills with track connections to QBL and Jamaica Yard.

  12. True, the RBB will most likely connect to the Queens Blvd line so that would be the cheapest alternative. A lot of proposal's have the (M) or (R) running to Rockaway Beach or JFK. The (M) would be a reasonable choice because it could create a marketing system from JFK to (IDK) Bryant Park or Herald Square. The (R) would Also be a good choice because it shares the same fleet with the (A) however weekend service would be different and would have to reschedule trains so I don't know what else to say but sign the petition to make this a reality

So, this thread has served it's purpose even though I recommend you all to sign this petition to make this proposal become a reality

Connecting it to QBL is not a good choice. The R is already long enough, and the M starts in southern Queens. I think it would be easier to connect to the LIRR mainline. The LIRR could run trains from NYP and Atlantic to JFK. They would reactivate the RBB, and use the express tracks at Aqueduct Racetrack and Aqueduct-North Conduit. One track can be built over at JFK to have a platform for the terminus, and a concourse can extended above the platform for ticket machines. If they don't want this, they could extend the RPK shuttle up to Forest Hills and have it connect to QBL there. They would also rename it to "H". A connection would also be made 104th St on the J. Knowing how people are though, they will build the Queensway because they "don't have enough parks" or "my privacy is going to be invaded by passengers looking out the window of a train going past at 40 mph".

  13. Is there a reason why R12 5760, R15 6239, and R33WF 9306 haven't been used on fan trips recently? If so, will they ever run again?

R12: Probably because it usually only runs with the old SMEEs

    R15: same as said above

R33WF: Well, they just restored 9307 so they might want to let it run for now to test it.
